How to get to Tokyo and Osaka?

Whether you’re flying to Tokyo or Osaka, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) offers direct flights from KLIA to Tokyo and Osaka. They offer top notch hospitality as well as a hassle-free travel experience, as a result MAS becomes one of the go-to airlines for many travellers.

To help get started on your next adventure, you may head over to MalaysiaAirlines.com to book your flight.

6 Things To Do In Tokyo

1. Nezu Shrine

How Much: Free (300 Yen, around RM6.60 to enter the hillside garden during Azalea Festival which starts from early April till end of May)

Are you tired of the hustle and bustle of city life and want to escape from it? Look no further than Nezu Shrine, a 300 year old shrine where you can experience the serenity of nature. It features 100 red gate tunnels, enough to teleport you to the Edo era (17th to 19th century).

2. Hana Biyori

How Much: 1500 Yen (Around RM49.50)

Hana Biyori is a super gorgeous flower park that will take your breath away. Every corner is a stunning insta-spot yearning for a picture to be taken at. There’s even a Starbucks inside the park that is surrounded by lush greenery, colorful blooms and unique aquarium.

3. Tokyo Skytree

How Much: From 1000 Yen per adult (Around RM33)

Tokyo Skytree is perhaps the most popular tourist spot in Tokyo. Just like our KLCC tower, the building features a shopping mall on the bottom, and with a couple of viewing decks within the tower. If you’re going on a budget, you may opt for the cheapest tier, which is the top called Tembo Galleria at 450m which cost only RM33.

4. Daiba Mysterious School

How Much: From 800 Yen per adult (Around RM26.30)

If you’re a fan of horror in general, you can’t leave Tokyo without experiencing the infamous Daiba Mysterious School. This place basically transports you to an abandoned spooky school with skin-crawling Japanese horror in real life. Think creepy mannequins, skulls and voices of sinister child’s laughter. At only RM26.30, this is a must-visit attraction for all J-Horror lovers.

5. Manga/Internet Cafe

How Much: From 1500 Yen onwards (Around RM49.50)

If you’re a vid manga reader, and happened to be traveling to Japan on a budget, you might wanna consider staying at a Manga/Internet cafe. Initially started as a place to read manga and surf the Internet, it’s now become the answer to expensive hotels in Tokyo. Think of a manga cafe as a private cubicle with a chair, desk, computer and unlimited Internet access. Better yet, some manga cafes offer sleeping mat. It’s not a 5-star hotel experience per say, but at RM50 for a 12 hour sleep in Tokyo sounds good enough for a B40 like us.

6. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

How Much: 200 Yen (Around RM6.60)

Nature lovers, we strongly recommend you to check out this place. Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is one of the biggest parks in Tokyo and it’s filled with lush greenery and a stunning lake. With a huge amount of open space and tons of well maintained plantation, it makes for a good place to have a picnic on a mild sunny day. Make sure you buy your budget food and drinks for nearby Family Mart.

6 Things To Do In Osaka

1. Kuromon Ichiba Market

How Much:  Free

Popularly known as “Osaka’s Kitchen”, Kuromon Market is an old market that has been open for over 100 years. In addition to food and fresh produce, there are also a small number of supermarkets and clothing stalls.

2. Osaka Castle

How Much:  600 Yen (Around RM19.80)

Osaka Castle is one of the most well known landmarks in Japan. The most perfect time to visit Osaka Castle Park would be during the March school holiday season (which is right now!) for those who want to take breathtaking cherry blossom photos.

3. Tempozan Ferris Wheel

How Much:  50 Yen (Around RM1.65)

Standing tall at 112-metre high, Tempozan Ferris Wheel is one of the tallest ferris wheels in Asia. This also means you can get a spectacular view of Osaka’s bay area. Lasting for 15 minutes, the ride is exceptionally thrilling thanks to its height. If you overcome your fear of heights, you’ll be rewarded with a  stunning view that’s definitely worth it.

4. Arcade Games @ Monte50

How Much: 50 Yen (Around RM1.65)

Monte50 is a hidden arcade that’s merely 5 minutes away from Umeda Station. This place is quite popular among locals as the arcade games here are super cheap – from 50 Yen.

There are many old school arcade games like Street Fighter II & Power Smash 3 and even new games like Tekken 7 & Ultra Street Fighter V.

5. Cup Noodles Museum

How Much: 500 Yen (Around RM16.50)

Instant noodle is such a comforting junk food that every Japanese person loves, so much that they had to set up a museum dedicated to instant noodle. It might sound unusual, but rest assured it’s educational and worth your time and entrance fee. There’s even a workshop where you can design, customize and enjoy your very own Cup Noodles.

6. Nishiki Beach

How Much: Free

When it comes to beaches in Japan, people often think of Okinawa’s. We’re here to report that Osaka also has its fair share of beaches. The most popular being Nishiki Beach. Known to be highly accessible (as there are many trains and cabs around this area), Nishiki is the go-to beach for locals and tourists alike.

There are also many fun-filled activities such as jet-skiing and windsurfing, but if you’re on a budget just enjoy the sun and the beach will do.

Skiing has become one of the most popular winter activities in South Korea, thanks in part to the influence of Korean drama such as Winter Sonata (2002) and Goblin (2016–17) which were filmed in Gangwon, are arguably some of the most watched dramas in history.

South Korea boasts numerous attractive ski locations, which makes for perfect place spend your holiday during winter time.

Gangwon province or the northern province of South Korea, located around 90-minute train ride away from Seoul, is a major skiing destination in Asia.

To experience how is it like travelling across Gangwon province during the winter time, Julian Yee, Malaysia’s Olympic figure and skater, and Yoke, Malaysian’s TV host will be taking you guys along to Pyeongchang and Gangneung via a 5 episodes of web series named Endless Horizon in Gangwon.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is K-star-road_1-1-683x1024.jpg

This is a project produced in collaboration with Korean Tourism Organisation (KTO).

Put on your earphone and watch how they immerse in the rich South Korean culture and stunning destinations!

Episode 1: Samgyetang, best food to consume during winter to stay warm

Just a little fun fact here, South Korea is one of the countries Julian went training at. He was trained in PyeongChang when he was 12 years old. In this episode, Julian brought Yoke to try one of the well known Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup) in town.

Samgyeteng is a vitalizing dish that is especially good for those who perspire easily, such as Julian Yee who is a sportsman himself.

After a wholesome meal, viewers are brought to Gyeongbokgung Palace. This historical building is the biggest of Seoul’s five grand places. The Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony which happens 3 times a day in, is a highly suggested itinerary for tourists.

Episode 2: Immsersing in Korean culture and wearing Hanbok

In this episode, catch Julian and Yoke explore in the city of Gangneung. And also, wearing Korean traditional consume named Hanbok while strolling the city.

Although many Korean are coffee lovers, tea is still widely consumed. What better way to learn and appreciate South Korean culture by experiencing a traditional tea ceremony (while donning a Hanbok).

Episode 3: Recreate your favourite K-drama scenes at these locations

https://youtu.be/Ma9XvqWBmcY

Jumunjin Beach in Gangneung.

K-drama fans will instantly recognize this beach from Goblin (2016-17) which the two main actors met for the first time.

There’s even a bus stop at the beach named after K-pop boyband BTS called “BTS Bus Stop”. The bus stop provides the backdrop for the boyband’s second repackage album You Never Walk Alone.

Last but not least, food lovers, remember to pencil down Gangneung Jungang Market in your travel itinerary. Don’t be surprised if you’re craving for some Korean food after watching Julian and Yoke savour some scrumptious street food in this episode.

Episode 4: Explore the nature charms of Pyeongchang, Korea’s top alpine town

https://youtu.be/-3qmyifW7qM

Julian and Yoke are making a trip to Pyeongchang. For this tour, they visited Sky Ranch, where they get to take part in sheep feeding. That’s not all, under a cheese-making professional guidance, they made cheese from scratch using fresh milk!

Episode 5: Unleash your inner sportsmanship via ice-snow sports

A winter holiday cannot be complete without winter sports. Rounding up this 5-episodes web series, Julian and Yoke are taking on both skiing, sledding and ice fishing with bare hands.

You don’t need to spend a fortune to travel overseas. Malaysia is filled with underrated holiday destinations that makes it seem like you’re on a holiday abroad.

Visit Semporna or Pulau Rawa to get a similar vibe of Maldives or even Bora-Bora. Also, feed some cattles in Kundasang that is known as the New Zealand of Malaysia. You can trick your IG followers by capturing envy-enducing holiday photos from these destinations, making them think you’re in foreign lands.

That said, here are the list of underrated destinations you can find locally.

1. Desa Cattle Dairy Farm @ Kundasang, Sabah

Located at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu, you’d come to find a cattle farm filled with Friesian cows. Similar to the farms from New Zealand, you can feed the calves and goats whilst learning how milk is processed here. Fun yet educational, as well. Also, did we mention that you’d get to enjoy the milkiest ice cream made from the farm itself?

2. The Sky Mirror @ Sasaran Beach, Kuala Selangor

Dubbed as Malaysia’s very own Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia’s salt flat), the shallow waters here reflects the sky hence creating a mirror effect that is totally photoworthy. Unlike the salt flat, you’d find just a large space filled with sand and sea water and tiny sea creatures like little hermits, worm and many more. This amazing mirror-like phenomenon only happens twice a month at different times of the day so don’t forget to line your plans out accordingly.

3. Klebang Sand Dunes @ Malacca

Always wanted to feel what it’s like to be in a dessert? Then head down to Malacca and enjoy the long stretch of abandoned reclaimed sand beside Klebang Beach. This has become an impromptu tourist attraction with man-made sand dunes littering the landscape ala the Sahara dessert. You might find some of the dunes several stories high and it’ll feel like you are really lost in a dessert. Get an Insta-worthy panorama shot as well as enjoy a sand boarding experience in one of a lifetime.

4. Semporna @ Sabah

Life is never too short to visit a fairytale destination. You’d come to find out that this ancient region in Turkey has lots to surprise you in contrast with its busy neighbouring city – Istanbul. Surely, these two cities may be in the same country. Nevertheless, we all are aware that the red apple is sweeter than the green one.

Houses carved out of caves and intricate fairy chimneys? Well, it certainly does sound quaint and magical to me. Cappadocia is rich in both history and culture. In a way, it will give you a taste of what its like to be in the Disney’s Aladdin film.

With a backdrop of pretty pastel hues that you’d only see in paintings – Cappadocia will give you a surreal experience with its jaw-dropping view. So be ready to capture the wonders of this beautiful city with both your eyes and camera.

1. Soar The Sky With A Ride On A Hot Air Balloon

Ever since the Malaysian film, “Manisnya Cinta Di Cappadocia” – I always wondered what’s it like to soar up the sky in a humongous balloon. I suppose on a bird’s eye view, it surely is captivating as it makes you feel like you can conquer the world.

For those that are afraid of heights, I’d reckon this is your chance to try to snap out of it. Challenge yourself to witness one of the world’s most beautiful backdrop and thank us later for it ?

As the whimsical wonderland of unexplainable beauty, it goes without saying that Cappadocia will leave you in awe at the very first sight of it. Savour the moment by taking in the most breathtaking aerial views you’ve ever seen from the highest point of the valleys.

With rock formations and carved out caves all around, take a stroll or hike up to enjoy the scenic view. You’d also find that the valleys are shaped as mushrooms and are called fairy chimneys.

3. Enjoy Your Stay In A Mind-Blowing Cave Hotel

This whimsical wonderland feels like it directly came out from a storybook. A mix of the medieval age and the present time – get ready to experience your time in Cappadocia by staying at any of their Cave Hotels.

Uniquely found, the rooms were carved out of porous rocks making it feel just like you’re living in an actual cave. The hotel still comes with all the basic necessities except for air conditioning but fret not about the heat as the natural stone walls excels in keeping the room cool.

To add on, most of the cave hotels has their very own little roof garden. The perfect spot for an evening tea as you can watch over the hot air balloons fly overhead through the sunset.

4. Captivating UNESCO Heritage Site

Dotted with intricate rock formations and fairy chimneys, the Goreme Open-Air Museum has been declared to be an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum gives you a good view of what the city holds and it is certainly a spot worth visiting.

Take a stroll around to enjoy the landscape as there are several paths along the valley that are even suitable for trekking.

5. Enjoy The Local Delight

Cappadocia is the place to indulge food served to you fancily, especially in hotels. Be sure to devour their very own specialty called the Testi Kebab. This mouth-watering spectacle is filled with juicy meat and vegetables where it’s cooked in a claypot for long hours.

To enjoy this dish, it is usually served with bread or rice by having the pot broken just before your eyes. And trust us when we say that our mouths are salivating as we write this!

These man-made structures has many floors down with over hundreds of tunnels that are able to accommodate thousands of people at the same time.

Comprised with the basic living accommodations such as kitchen and bathrooms, it is interesting to find out that there were people that lived their entire lives below the surface.

7. Go On A Horse or A Camel Ride To Explore The Land

If you didn’t know, Cappadocia actually means the Land of Beautiful Horses. What is a trip to this fairytale land if you didn’t actually get on a horse or camel?

Asia attracts thousands of backpackers each year, each looking to experience the incredible people, food and culture. On a salary of less than $1500 a month, it is possible to comfortably travel this area of the world full time.

However, before you go, there are a few things to consider. Whether you are wandering the temples of Nepal or kicking back in Thailand.

Here are 6 Important Things You Should Do Before Backpacking Across Asia.

1. Research the Weather

Asia is a vast and vastly underestimated landscape. The difference between the Indian Himalayas and Thai sandy beaches can be huge, so always check the temperature before you go. Remember that countries located near to the equator may not have hot versus cold seasons like you are used to, but rather wet versus dry. Research the weather conditions and pack accordingly.

2. Pack Light

Image Credit: Photo by Stephan Vance on Unsplash

Southeast Asia comprises 11 countries clustered together. Combined with cheap transport and accommodation, staying in constant motion is an easy and exciting way to travel. However, for this, you must pack as lightly as possible. Although a relatively safe area of the world, only take valuable items which are absolutely essential in case anything is stolen.

3. Learn About the Different Cultures

Image Credit: Dominik Vanyi on Unsplash

Each region of Asia has a unique history and it is useful to understand the culture of the place you are visiting. You don’t need to be an expert, but knowing your Khmer from your Kadazan goes a long way. Be aware of the local religious culture, be it Muslim, Buddhist, or anything else. Being sensitive to this information will ensure you avoid any social faux pas. Being up to date on local laws will also help.

4. Check Visa Requirements

Unlike when traveling throughout the EU or USA, each new country you visit in Southeast Asia will have its own entry requirements. You may have the documents ready for Cambodia, but when you turn up at the Vietnamese border, do you have your passport photos ready?

5. Get Immunized

Much of Asia is covered in dense rainforest, which means there are disease-carrying insects. Some vaccinations are legally required for entry, but you may want to get a few more just to be safe. Pay your nurse a visit for the most up to date advice on what immunizations are recommended.

6. Don’t Plan or Worry Too Much

Image Credit: Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

There is so much to explore in Asia, but don’t overplan. The best adventures you will have will involve discovering new, unbeaten paths. Enjoy the freedom of going with the flow. Be sensible and wary, but just enjoy the journey.

Researching a place beforehand will help you know what to pack and how to legally enter the country, but don’t over plan. Visiting Asia is a chance to relax, unwind and explore. Follow the simple advice above and you are bound to have life-changing adventure.

RED by Sirocco is one of the latest four-star boutique hotels to open in town, located along Jalan Kamunting in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur. The nearest train station to this trendy hotel is Dang Wangi LRT station. For those who dread driving, you can choose to travel around the city with the LRT train.

It’s also noteworthy to mention that surrounding the hotel are some of KL’s most popular eateries such as Yut Kee Restaurant, Kin Kin Pan Mee and Mohd Yaseen Penang Nasi Kandar.

RED By Sirocco is under M101 Holdings new ownership and the hotel is recently awarded with the Malaysia Book of Records for “The Tallest Mural in Malaysia”.

This stunning mural was painted by Malaysia graffiti artist Kenji Chai who was born in Sabah. It took him 10 hours to paint the mural daily and completed it in 21 days.

Standing at 25 floors tall, RED By Sirocco has 143 rooms, 2 dining outlets, a massage bar, a rooftop infinity pool and a well equipped fitness centre.

Checking In

Spanning at 472 square feet, the Deluxe Room is very spacious, cosy and adequate, well equipped with necessities such as vanity table, LED flat screen TV, safe box, rain shower, and the super comfortable bed where we spent our time working on our videos and website.

Among all, the most attractive in-room complimentary benefits are the classic Chinese tea set and Cafés  Richard coffee machine, all refillable every day during your stay.

The balcony gives a fantastic view of the iconic KL tower, undoubtedly the highlight of the room.

Facilities

The rooftop infinity pool of RED by Sirocco enjoys one of the best views in Kuala Lumpur. Its location on the 25th floor offers uninterrupted views of KL tower as well as Petronas Twin Towers.  The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

The Rouge Club is a club lounge in RED by Sirocco and it is located alongside the infinity pool. Be sure to drop by here for their wide range of cocktails and alcohols.

At the lower ground floor, beside the concierge is BARkery, a bakery house where you can get freshly baked pastries as well as coffee and beverages.

For those who would like to have a rejuvenating experience, their on-site massage bar is a must visit. Named The Rub Bar, the massage bar is the perfect place to relax after a long day of touristing around KL.

The environment of The Rub Bar is calm and soothing, and you could really enjoy yourself with the massage offered here by their friendly staff.

Verdict

All in all, we enjoyed our 3 days 2 nights staycation at RED by Sirocco. The hotel is in a quiet private street, it made us feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of KL city but central enough to reach the main sights and attractions in only minutes by foot.

The hotel’s highlights are the rooftop bar and cozy massage bar—be sure to save some time to enjoy it.

Thanks to the RED by Sirroco team for arranging this stay.

When people talk about traveling to Thailand, they often think about 3 popular destinations – Phuket, Krabi and Bangkok. Personally we are not big fans of these 3 places as they are too mainstream and we prefer somewhere lesser known.

Hence we would like to share about Hua Hin, one of the most underrated travel destinations in Southeast Asia. Beautiful beaches, cultural heritage spots, stunning nature sites and delicious food, Hua Hin is a city every Malaysian should visit at least once.

Traveling to Hua Hin

One of the main reasons to visit Hua Hin is the cheap flight ticket. A one way flight from Kuala Lumpur to Hua Hin starts at only RM79, valid from May 18 2018 – Oct 26 2019. Click on this link to book your flight via AirAsia today

Image Credit: Apa Nama Facebook User

There is only one international airport in Hua Hin and it’s roughly 10 minutes away from the popular Anantara Hua Hin Resort.

Getting Around Hua Hin

There are only 2 forms of public transportation in Hua Hin – Taxi and Tuk Tuk. Based on our experience a taxi ride from Hua Hin Night Market to Anantara Hua Hin Resort (6KM) cost THB150. While Tuk Tuks may be perceived as a cheaper alternative, the rates are actually pretty similar.

Accommodation in Hua Hin

There are countless of hotels in Hua Hin with prices as low as RM85 per night. But to fully experience the joy of Hua Hin, staying at the “right” hotel/resort really matters.

Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa

Anantara Hua Hin Resort & Spa is inarguably the best place to stay in Hua Hin. This resort incorporates traditional Thai elements to its design while maintaining a luxurious experience. Hotel guest can enjoy everything from a private beach, stunning pool, yoga classes, Thai cooking class, fitness centre and more.

Room prices start from THB4,020 ++ (around RM500).

AVANI Hua Hin Resort & Villas

AVANI Hua Hin Resort & Villas is a fairly new resort which opened about 7 months ago. It features chic yet contemporary rooms with stunning beach and pool views. Some rooms even boast its own private pool. Other facilities includes spa, 24-hour fitness centre, multiple swimming pools, large kids’ club, beachside view, and more.

Room prices start from THB3,200 ++ (around RM398).

Things To Do

1# Santorini Park

Perhaps the most photogenic spot in this list, Santorini Park was built inspired by the island of Santorini in Greece. All the buildings in Santorini Park are painted in white and blue, which makes the perfect backdrop if you love photography and Instagramming.

There are also many other fun things to do here such as going on a Ferris Wheel Ride, Merry Go Round, Haunted House and more.

Cost: THB150 (around RM19)
Opening Hours: Mon – Fri, 9.30AM – 6.30PM, Sat-Sun, 9.00AM – 6.30PM
Address: Khao Yai, Cha-am District, Phetchaburi 76120, Thailand

2# Hua Hin Railway Station

At first we thought Hua Hin Railway Station was a place solely for photo and scenery. Turns out, it is an actual train station with real train to convey passengers from Hua Hin to major cities like Bangkok and Surat Thani.

First opened in 1911, the station has a Royal Waiting Room, a room that used to welcome King and his court when they were visiting the Hua Hin town. Overall, it’s a good place to unwind and take memorable pictures for your trip.

Cost: Free
Address: Hua Hin, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110, Thailand

3# Monsoon Valley Vineyard

(formerly known as Hua Hin Hills Vineyard)

This is the perfect place to enjoy a sophisticated steak meal with a glass of wine accompanied with a stunning view of mountains and greens. You can dine at the nearby Sala Wine Bar & Bistro which is owned by the Vineyard itself.

Opening Hours: Daily, 9.00AM – 8.00PM

4# Hua Hin International Jazz Festival

Hua Hin International Jazz Festival features everything from jazz performances to booze and irresistible street food. It’s a good place to have a sip of alcohol while enjoying live musical performance. It’s usually held by the ocean, so bring your beach chair or a blanket and enjoy the night.

Hua Hin International Festival is held 2 days annually so keep a look out for it in 2019.

Cost: Free

5# Hua Hin Beaches

One of the biggest reason one should visit Hua Hin is for its magnificent beaches. If you choose to stay in Anantara Hua Hin Resort, you’ll have the luxury to enjoy a private beach. Believe us when we say, the beaches here are truly amazing.

Not a fan of sunbathing? You can opt for other beach activities such as horse riding or kite flying.

Cost: Free

6# Phraya Nakhon Cave

Phraya Nakhon Cave is one of the few caves in Thailand that house a temple. Back then, King Rama IV used this cave to meditate and study Buddhism. Today the monks use this sanctuary as a place for meditation. To get to the cave, you can choose to hike over the hill or take a boat to reach Laem Sala Beach, which is where Phraya Nakhon Cave located.

Do note that this is a super exhausting activity. The uphill path leading to the cave is steep and rough. It is advisable to take the boat ride over to the beach to cut the time by half. Make sure you have enough water with you and be prepared to sweat and get down and dirty.

Cost: THB150 (around RM18) to rent a boat
Opening Hours: Daily, 8.00AM – 4.00PM

7# Chatsila Night Market

There are numbers of night markets scattered across Hua Hin. Chatsila Night Market is perfect for clothes, jewellery, and other souvenirs. We did not include any budget here as it will vary depending on individual tastes. If you really want to go on a shopping spree in Hua Hin, it is advisable to bring extra cash.

Opening Hours: 5.00PM – 11.00PM, Daily
Address: Hua Hin, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110, Thailand

8# Hua Hin Night Market

Hua Hin Night Market is home to lots of stalls that specializes in seafood, especially prawns and lobsters. The seafood stalls here are truly epic, filled with the freshest catch such as gigantic lobster, massive prawns, fish, almost all the possible seafood you could think of.

They also have pretty interesting souvenirs, I mean where in Malaysia could you find these masks?!

Address: Soi Hua Hin 72 Dechanuchit Road, Hua Hin 77110 Thailand

Of course this isn’t the COMPLETE guide to discover Hua Hin, as there are lots more things to do such as visiting Hua Hin Floating Market, Swiss Sheep Farm, Camel Republic and more. Nonetheless we hope this could be a useful first timer guide to Hua Hin.

If you are looking for a short makan trip in Kuala Lumpur complete with accommodation, you might want to check out Tamu Hotel & Suites. Tamu Hotel & Suites is a 4 Star Business-Class Hotel located in the heart of Kampung Baru. While it doesn’t seem like much on the outside, the view from the rooms and infinity pool was simply stunning.

It is strategically located in Kampung Baru which is relatively known to feature some of the best Malay food in Kuala Lumpur such as Nasi Lemak Wanjo, Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa, Apam Balik Nusantara and lots more.

We were pleasantly surprise by the top notch service here especially for a 4 star hotel. The staffs here were polite, welcoming and super accommodating. We stayed at Tamu Hotel and Suites for 3 days and 2 nights and needless to say, we couldn’t be more pleased with our experience.

From what we’ve gathered, a standard room starts from RM218 while a junior suite starts from RM319. We stayed in the junior suite which came with stunning views of both the Twin Towers and KL Tower.

In addition to the basic amenities such as such as an electric kettle, air conditioning, 2 LED flat screen TV, safe box, shower, cupboard, complimentary WiFi, prayer mat is also provided in every room for Muslim guests.

The only thing we were extremely unhappy about the room is the lack of internet connection. Not only it was pretty slow, the WiFi signal is unreachable in the sleeping room. We spoke to the hotel about it and they are aware of the short comings and are apparently working to fix it. Hence by the time you read this, the WiFi would be a non-issue.

The bathroom has all the basic bath products needed for your stay. This huge bathroom features a bath tub and a super strong pressured rain shower system. The water heater worked efficiently and was beyond our expectations so there is nothing to complain about.

One of the best things about Tamu Hotel is the view and the massive infinity pool. The pool is located at the 14th floor, it should impress you with Kuala Lumpur’s amazing Twin Tower and KL Tower view. The pool has a roof hence even if it rains, you can still swim without a worry. Currently, the pool is only opened from 7AM – 7PM.

Tamu Hotel is still in its infancy stage hence many restaurants isn’t opened yet. However, the coffee house at the lobby, dubbed Tamu Junction is opened 24 hours and has typical dishes like Nasi Lemak and Curry Noodles.

The food here was quite disappointing as service was super slow and taste was just so-so. We highly recommend to try out the neighbouring restaurants such as Nasi Lemak Wanjo, Durian Cendol, Suriya Thai just to name a few.

Verdict

Overall, our 3 days 2 night staycation at Tamu Hotel was enjoyable. Although their F&B area isn’t strong, the massive infinity pool and beautiful room view certainly makes this hotel desirable.  If you value comfort over price, Tamu Hotel is probably for you.

We are quite sure Tamu Hotel will continue to be among the best choices for accommodation in Kuala Lumpur for the years to come.

Chow Kit is one of the busier sub-district of the city of KL. The place is most known for the city’s unofficial Red Light District, however there are plenty of delicious authentic Malaysian food here.

Chow Kit is also home to the largest and most popular morning market in Malaysia, the Chow Kit Bazaar Baru. This city is also easily accessible via public transportation.

So, from one of the best Nasi Kandar in KL to the original Chili Pan Mee restaurant, let’s get into what Chow Kit has to offer.

How to Get into Chow Kit

If you’re coming from a different city or state via public transport, there are 2 ways you can get into Chow Kit:

  1. Drop at KL Sentral and take the Monorail to Chow Kit Station
  2. Drop at KL Sentral and take the LRT

Our preferred way is to use the LRT as it is more faster and efficient. However if it is not during rush hour the Monorail can be pretty fast too.

Where to stay in Chow Kit

Hotel Stripes

Small hotels are what you’ll find the most authentic experience in Chow Kit but one of our most memorable hotel stays is at the Hotel Stripes.

Hotel Stripes is only 6 minutes walking distance away from Dang Wangi LRT station. Its strategic location makes it a great place to stay when you’re in KL. The bedroom was super comfortable with the warm lighting and a decent view of the city. But the highlight of the hotel is the infinity pool. You don’t have to love swimming to appreciate the pleasant poolside ambiance which is complimented with a view of the iconic KL tower.

A day rate starts at about RM288/night which is super worth it considering the amount of facilities you get to enjoy. Click here to read the full review of Hotel Stripes.

Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is a hip and trendy 4-star hotel located at Pudu, a stone throw away from the shopping belt of KL such as Berjaya Time Square and Pavilion KL. Run by its parents company AccorHotels, Mercure Hotel is the first Mercure brand in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Bookings.com, a 2D1N stay at Mecure Hotel would cost RM250 (excluding tax).

Checking In

Upon arrival at the Mercure Hotel on a Saturday afternoon, we eagerly made our way through the lobby to check-in with the staff. Check in time was at 3PM however, we were told to wait an extra hour as the room was not yet ready and the hotel was fully booked. So we waited at the lobby and there were no apologies or even courtesy drinks were given.

The Deluxe Queen room that we stayed isn’t spacious but is good enough for 2 pax. The room is also well-appointed with essentials such as an electric kettle, air conditioning, LED flat screen TV, safe box, shower, cupboard, complimentary WiFi throughout the premises, and an incredibly plush and comfortable bed.

Other highlights were the cosy day lounge sofa perched by the floor-to-ceiling windows, ideal for chilling and the decent view of Bukit Bintang area.

Our only gripe about the room was the lack of soundproofing, it was extremely irritating to hear loud conversations in the corridor and people opening and closing their room doors. Especially when it’s 12:30AM and you’re trying to get some quality sleep.

Facilities

The outdoor pool and bar on the 20th floor provide a decent view of Bukit Bintang city. The pool was much smaller than what you’d expect from a 4 star hotel. When it gets crowded it can be very uncomfortable as there’s almost no room for swimming. There is also a fitness studio which comes with cardio machines, free weights, exercise balls and mats.

Mercure Hotel’s sole restaurant, Chorak was disappointing. The quality of the food was utterly bad, even food from the mamak stall is better quality than what we had. Food items such as the fried noodle and fried rice tasted blend. There were very few choices, especially for a 4-star restaurant.

Verdict

While Mercure Hotel may not be the best hotel we’ve stayed as there were many misses, our stay is still considerably decent. Despite the bad soundproof, the room is pretty relaxing and comfortable. The hotel is waking distance to many eateries, such as a mamak store, and Chinese eateries. Convenience stores like 7-11 and 99 Speedmart are also skirt around the premise.

All in all, Mercure Hotel is an alright place to stay if you’re ONLY expecting a comfortable room and a good location. It’s an ideal accommodation if you’re after a shopping spree at the city’s Golden Triangle area.

Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur is nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur alongside the historical streets of Jalan Kamunting. Some of Kuala Lumpur’s greatest food, art galleries, shopping mall and iconic landmarks are a stone throw away from this hotel.

Hotel Stripes is YTL Hotels’ second autograph hotel. It opened on 18th February 2017 and has been wowing hotel guests ever since.

The strategic location and accessibility of this hotel makes it a good place to stay for a fuss free weekend staycation in Kuala Lumpur. Hotel Stripes is only 6 minutes walking distance away from Dang Wangi LRT station. So if you dread driving, you may opt for traveling around the city with Kuala Lumpur’s highly reliable LRT.

Although there is nothing outstanding about its exterior we are tremendously pleased with the hotel’s interior. Hotel Stripes is designed to emphasis on the local heritage while having a touch of contemporary and modern vibe as displayed by the warm lighting and stylish furniture.

Hotel Stripes has 184 guest rooms and suites, 2 dining outlets, a rooftop bar, a rooftop swimming pool and a well-equipped gym.

We stayed at the Executive Deluxe room which would cost RM281++ / night + RM45 for buffet breakfast. The room was spotless and super comfortable with the warm lighting and a decent view of the city.

The room was also spacious enough to accommodate a sofa and a work table alongside a comfortable queen size bed. Besides the basic amenities each room comes with its own coffee maker, in-room mini bar and nostalgic sweets, all refillable every day during your stay.

Guests are entitled to free WiFi throughout the entire hotel premises. The connection speed was fairly decent for basic browsing and checking emails.

The bathroom comes with all basic essential products that are needed for your stay. You can always request for any special toiletries such as a razor to the receptionist . We loved the rain shower system in the bathroom as the water pressure was strong with adjustable temperature.

The infinity pool is indeed the highlight of Hotel Stripes. You don’t have to love swimming to appreciate the pleasant poolside ambiance which is complimented with a view of the iconic KL tower and other sky scrapers in the city. The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

Man Tao Bar is the sole rooftop pool bar in Hotel Stripes and it is situated alongside the infinity pool. It is mostly popular during the evening due to the soothing view of the pool and city’s skyscrapers at night.

China Doll (RM40) and Tsing Tini (RM40).

The Gym is surprisingly small but it is modern and well-equipped. The Gym features a flat screen television and Bluetooth speakers which you can connect with your phone and play any songs of your choice. Alternatively, you can also request for a pair of earphones from the receptionist. The GYM opens 24 hours a day to all hotel guests.

We decided to have dinner at Brasserie 25 which is a sophisticated and stylish French restaurant. Besides the gorgeous interior design, we truly admire the quality of the food and excellent service at Brasserie 25. We would go so far to say that Brasserie 25 would be ranked among the top 3 best French restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. Click here to check out the full food review of Brasserie 25.

Hotel breakfast is served at The Snug (buffet restaurant) at the 2nd floor. While the selection of the spread is fairly limited the quality of the food isn’t compromised. There are 2 sections to The Snug’s buffet spread – Dine In and Grab & Go. Although the Grab & Go section is catered to those who are on the run, you’re still allowed eat food from the Grab & Go section while dining in.

Room rates start from RM247. Check-in time is at 3pm, check-out time is at 12pm.

Valet parking is available at RM10 per stay for hotel guests

Verdict

All in all, our stay at Hotel Stripes was a pleasant experience. It perfectly balances out the 4 important factors when looking for a hotel to stay: location, accessibility, value and amenities. We personally feel this hotel is suitable for families or couples coming to KL for a staycation and travellers who are looking for an affordable yet quality stay.

We can’t emphasize enough on the strategic location of Hotel Stripes. So we’ve listed some popular spots around Kuala Lumpur which are walking & driving distance away from Hotel Stripes:

  • Dang Wangi LRT Station                     0.2KM
  • Medan Tuanku Monorail Station    0.3 km
  • Capital Square                                           0.4 km
  • Parkson Maju Junction Mall              0.5 km
  • Quill City Mall                                             0.5 km
  • Jalan Masjid India                                       0.6 km
  • Menara KL Tower                                 0.6 km
  • Chow Kit Market                                   0.7 km
  • Kin Kin Pan Mee                                   0.7 km
  • Mohd Yaseen Nasi Kandar                   0.75 km
  • Petronas Twin Towers                          1.2 km
  • Berjaya Times Square                          2 km
  • TREC KL                                              2.9 km

While Hotel Stripes only recently opened its doors, we’re pretty sure that it will continue to be among the top suggestions for hotels in Kuala Lumpur in the months to come.

Malaysia’s capital and largest city Kuala Lumpur (KL) is the most visited city in Malaysia by tourist form all over the world. The city of KL also has the rank of 10 (10th) most visited visited cities in the whole world.

A whopping 12.3 million international tourists visited Kuala Lumpur last year, which is more than cities in Asia such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Seoul and even Rome in Europe.

With Kuala Lumpur’s offerings such as amazing food, tall skyscrapers, affordable prices and overall vibrant atmosphere, the city has attracted millions of people around the world in 2016 alone. It’s also obvious that our declining currency is the likely reason why tourist flock over to Malaysia.

Euromonitor International’s Top 100 City Destinations 2017 list was released at the World Travel Market (WTM) London. Hong Kong took the 1st most visited cities in the world with 26.6 million visitors, mainly due to its strategic location and relationship with China.

Bangkok took the 2nd spot, surpassing London and Singapore which were in the 3rd and 4th place respectively. Below is the rank of top 10 most visited cities in the world.

  1. Hong Kong: 26.6 Million Visitors
  2. Bangkok: 21.2 Million Visitors
  3. London: 19.2 Million Visitors
  4. Singapore: 16.6 Million Visitors
  5. Macau: 15.4 Million Visitors
  6. Dubai: 14.9 Million Visitors
  7. Paris: 14.4 Million Visitors
  8. New York: 12.7 Million Visitors
  9. Shenzhen: 12.6 Million Visitors
  10. Kuala Lumpur: 12.3 Million Visitors

Cities from Asia rule in terms of global destination rankings, contrast that with the 2010’s result where only 34 cities in Asia Pacific were present in Euromonitor International’s ranking. Now, there are 41 cities in 2017 and its expected to rise up to almost 50 cities in 2025.

“Asia Pacific is the standout region that has driven change in the travel landscape and is expected to continue doing so in the coming decade with Singapore overtaking London as the third most visited city in the world by 2025 making the podium fully Asian,” said Euromonitor International.

Kuala Lumpur is expecting to gain 12.8 million visitors from tourist which sees a 4.5% growth. It’s also worth mentioning that other cities in Malaysia such as Johor Bahru and Penang did made the list, ranking at 42nd and 63rd spot respectively.

Located on the outskirts of Putrajaya, Le Méridien Putrajaya is one of the few 5-Star hotels in town. The hotel is strategically connected to IOI City Mall and is about 20 minutes drive from KL. Thanks to a lucky draw, we had the privilege to stay at Le Méridien Putrajaya for 4 days and 3 nights and it was a pleasurable experience to say the least.

According to Le Méridien’s official website, a signature room starts from RM340 exclude breakfast. The price is definitely on the higher side as it’s typically expected for a 5-Star Luxury Hotel. The room was equipped with basic amenities and more – 40inch LED TV, work desk and chair, mini sofa, fridge and free WiFi. We must say the WiFi connection is fairly speedy as we didn’t encounter any issues watching HD videos on YouTube.

Upon entering the room, the first thing that grabbed our attention was the spacious interior. Our single beds were massive for a single bed and comfortable – it’s one of the best parts of the room. We had our buffet breakfast at 6AM in the morning and went back to bed afterwards – that’s how comfortable the beds were.

And of course, this view. Yes, it’s not the conventional KL City skyline view, nonetheless we were at the 7th floor of Le Méridien and the empty highways do give out a peaceful vibe at night. It’s also worth mentioning that the sound-proof of Le Méridien’s rooms was pretty solid as we didn’t hear any noise from outside.

Just like the rooms in here, the bathroom was roomy and has the necessary bath products you need for your stay. For the price per night, we thought getting Malin + Goetz toiletries was a fair deal.

The bathroom features a regular water heater, rain shower system and a bathtub with an extensive window view of your room (and blinds for privacy).

Our one complaint here is the water heater’s temperature isn’t consistent as it drops from hot to slightly colder from time to time. This kinda ruins the relaxing shower experience, hence we decided to use the bathtub to avoid the “potong-steam”.

All hotel guest are given one complimentary Cappuccino/Black Coffee from Latitude 02 – a cafe/bar nearby the lobbyLe Méridien Putrajaya, courtesy of Le Méridien.

One of the best parts of a 5-Star Luxury Hotel is the pool area. Le Méridien’s pool is located at the 3rd floor of the hotel and it does provide a decent view. There aren’t any lifeguards on duty hence do exercise caution in the pool area.

The gym at Le Méridien’s was well-equipped as it was furnished with every important gym items such as dumbbells and roller in a gym.

Now, on to the best part of any 5-Star luxury hotel, the buffet breakfast. We had our breakfast at Latest Recipe which offers International Buffet Breakfast. The buffet spread features cuisines of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Western.

Latest Recipe’s breakfast starts from 6AM – 10AM, we woke up around 5.30AM to make sure we avoid the breakfast crowd.

The buffet is generic, the food are exactly what you expect from a 5-Star hotel – decent spread, various cuisines, and acceptable taste. We personally wished there were more variety of sushi and more dishes in the western section. We didn’t care for the Indian section as the Roti Canai, Tosai and Capati weren’t made fresh.

Still, we highly recommend you try the Latest Recipe’s buffet breakfast, at least for a day as it’s one of the best parts during our stay.

All in all, our 4 days and 3 nights stay at Le Méridien was enjoyable. Indeed there are few things we feel Le Méridien could do better but let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as the perfect hotel.

We personally feel Le Méridien is more suitable for business trips or family who perfects a high quality and comfortable stay.

Pros: Spacious Room, Good View, Strong WiFi, Friendly Staff, Good Location (connected to IOI City Mall),

Cons: Check-in Time at 3PM, Repetitive Buffet Breakfast Spread, Confusing Lifts (not sure whether its going up or down)

1. Book flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur – Taipei (the capital of Taiwan)

If you book a few months in advance, the flight ticket will be cheaper. In this case, we used AirAsiaGo and we got two-way trip tickets for as low as RM868. You might be able to get it at a cheaper rate if you purchase your tickets during non peak season.

The journey to Taipei from Kuala Lumpur: 4 hours of flight (from KL – Taipei)

Flight Ticket = RM868 (Round Trip)

2. Book a Hotel

We used Expedia to book our hotels and there are a lot of hotels ranging from different prices. Since we’re on a tight budget, we chose a decent budget hotel with clean and comfortable room at around RM115 per night.

Hotel Budget = RM105 x 6 nights

= RM721/2 (shared with 2 person)

= RM360 each

3. Internet is all you need when you are in Taiwan (4G everywhere with unlimited data!)

SIM cards are readily available for tourist and travelers in Taiwan. The following unlimited data 4G SIM Packages are available at airports including Taipei Taoyuan Airport.

Taiwan is one of the few countries that offers real unlimited 3G and 4G internet on daily packages.

  • 3 day unlimited pass + NT$100 credit = NT$300 (RM42)
  • 5 day unlimited pass + NT$50 credit = NT$300 (RM42)
  • 5 day unlimited pass + NT$300 credit = NT$500 (RM70)
  • 7 day unlimited pass + NT$150 credit = NT$500 (RM70)
  • 10 day unlimited pass + NT$100 credit = NT$500 (RM70)
  • 15 day unlimited pass + NT$100 credit = NT$700 (RM98)
  • 15 day unlimited pass + NT$250 credit = NT$800 (RM112)
  • 30 day unlimited pass + NT$430 credit = NT$1000 (RM140)

Since you are going to be here for 7 days 6 nights, we suggest you to get the 7 day unlimited pass which will cost you NT$500 (about RM70).

Having internet connection throughout Taipei would really come in handy as everything can be found online and you would never get lost.

Unlimited 4G internet for 7 days = RM70.

4. Transportation in Taiwan

Once you reach Taoyuan Airport, you can take a bus to Taipei Main Station (the central part of Taipei). Busses leave frequently and cost NT$125 (about RM17.5) per ticket. Get down at Taipei Main Station as it is the primary interchange station for the city.

You then can get around in Taipei using their MRT. The Taipei MRT is the most convenient way to travel around Taiwan’s capital city. The Taipei metro is both cheap and convenient to ride.

Taipei MRT stations are clearly labelled in English, and will take you to the majority of the important tourist stops. All the exits at MRT stations have big maps in English on their walls where you can see Taipei attractions such as museums, temples, and parks.

Transportation Budget in Taiwan (Airport):

i) Bus from Taoyuan International Airport to Taipei Main Station = RM17.5 (NT$125)

ii) Bus from Taipei Main Station to Taoyuan International Airport = RM17.5 (NT$125)

Taipei MRT:

MRT in Taipei

Rides on the metro system are not free, but they’re cheap. If you plan on doing a lot of traveling on the Taipei MRT, you’ll want to get an EasyCard (similar to our Malaysian Touch n go card), a ‘touch-and-go’ IC ticketing system for the Taipei Metro and bus services.

The card is the size of a credit card and will cost NT$500 (about RM70) to set up NT$100 for a deposit and the other NT$400 (about RM56) that you will be able to use to travel. You can use the card to get a 20% discount on rides in the Taipei MRT.

The MRT’s fares are distance-based, so the further you travel, the more you pay. A fare for a single-trip in Taipei’s subway will be between NT$15 (RM2.10) and NT$65 (RM9.10), but we doubt you’ll be spanning the full distance of the MRT.

Transportation Budget in Taiwan (MRT):

i) Using MRT with EasyCard = RM70 (NT$500)

5. Food

Since our budget is about spending RM1,800 in 7 days 6 nights, you need to be a little stingy when it comes to food. But don’t worry, there are lots of good food with affordable price. We will explain also where to get Halal food for all our Muslim readers as well.

Try to avoid ordering crab dishes and other expensive seafood. But you still can have a good meal for about NT$120 to NT$160 (RM16.80 – RM22.40) for each meal. You can actually save more in some places.

Taipei is well-known for their night markets, which open all over the city in the evening, selling a huge range of clothes and household goods, but their main attraction is the street food.

Halal Food in Taipei, Taiwan

Coming from the land of ‘Xiao long bao’, you may be surprised to discover that Taiwan has not one, but two halal certification boards. The Taiwan Halal Integrity Development Association (THID) and the Chinese Muslim Association have both taken up the mantle of Halal watchdog.

Association differentiates “halal restaurants”; restaurants owned by Muslims, and “Muslim friendly restaurants”; restaurants owned by non-Muslims), both are fully Halal certified and safe for muslims to enjoy.

Which Restaurants are Halal?

Taiwan boasts a surprising range of halal food options covering cuisines as varied as Chinese, Taiwanese, Indian and even Egyptian!

If you really want to pamper yourself and you think dining halal food in a 5 star hotel’s restaurant, we suggest you to dine at Palais De Chine’s restaurant. They have a vast variety of food choices, buffet style!!

A warning for street food: most of the meats are probably cooked with lard, so you may want to try asking the vendors as a precaution, or ordering the numerous tasty vegetarian dishes instead.
