To retired is to expired, but for one passionate individual, Megan Wong decided to venture into the world of baking after leaving her accounting job behind at the age of 62 years old.

Founded more than a year ago, Moment Wonders is a home baking business specializing in exquisite eclairs, puffs and financiers. She started Moment Wonders with the help of her daughters from home.

Never Stop Learning

While Megan had gained proficiency in cakes and cookies through online recipes, she felt the desire to specialize in eclairs, drawing inspiration from the stunning creations of renowned pastry chef Christophe Adam.

Fueling with passion to bake pastries, she attended a one-month intensive baking course at a French school and even took an online éclair course conducted by a Russian pastry chef.

Moment Wonders adopts a pre-order system. This allows for meticulous planning and preparation, ensuring that only what has been ordered is made, guaranteeing the freshness of their pastries.

To ensure the highest quality in their creations, the ingredients are carefully sourced from trusted suppliers, such as Niko Neko for matcha and houjicha, and Callebaut for premium Belgian chocolate.

While Megan mostly in-charge in sourcing ingredients and baking, her daughters manage the social media platforms and assist with assembling pastries during weekends, fostering a close-knit family dynamic while imparting the values of pursuing dreams and passion.

Passion Fuels Small Business

For those considering starting a home baking business, Moment Wonders’ advice is simple: if you love baking, just do it.

UPDATE: Penang Rood Pork Noodle relocated to Old Fatt Kee @ 20, Jalan Bandar 7, Pusat Bandar Puchong, 47100 Puchong, Selangor

When people talk about Pork Noodle in Puchong, they often think of the popular ones such as Everyday Foodcourt (which used to operate in Fatt Kee). Not long ago, they shifted and a new Pork Noodle stall called Penang Rood Pork Noodle moved in.

Of course, the name might have been spell wrongly intentionally to catch people’s attention. If we were right about the reasoning for the stall’s name, they certainly did a good job.

First thing that you’d notice about the pork noodles here is the slightly nutty brown broth as opposed to the regular clear ones you get elsewhere. It is simply because of using large amounts of pork minced meat which is packed with fat.

While the soup is well cooked with sweet flavour from the pork, the real attractions of the dish are the toppings.

It comes with generous amounts of minced meat, pork meatballs, pork slices, pork intestines and more, making it a wholesome meal even if eaten simply with dry noodle.

For those pork noodle lover out there, if you’d like to try something new, then this probably might be as enjoyable. All and all, it is a delicious and filling meal that we wouldn’t mind returning to.

Mancave Cafe & Collectibles is a dream come true for every superhero fans. Despite its somewhat secluded location in Puchong, the newly opened cafe has attracted a good amount of diners since its opening in earlier January, and we can clearly see why.

Upon entering into the cafe, the first thing that you will notice is the superhero and villains figurines such as Batman, Ironman, Captain America, Joker, Harley Quinn and more, neatly organised at every corner of this cozy and spacious cafe. It’s like a mini museum for figurines and if you are a superhero fan, you are going to have a fun time taking photos of them.

Founded by 3 superhero fans, the co-founders have been collecting figurines for more than 15 years. This explains why you could see many different superheroes from different generation. One of the co-founder Mr Lee said, the thought of only them admiring the figurines is too selfish. So they decided to open a cafe and displaying their collections, at the same time making Mancave as a cozy cafe for people to dine in and relax.

Latte (RM10.90)

Besides coffee and tea, the juices served here is inspired by your favourite superheroes like Ironman, Deadpool, Hulk, Rogue, just to mention a few.

With Avengers and Deadpool being shown on the cinema this year, we went with Ironman (RM10.90)Deadpool (RM10.90), and Rogue (RM10.90) which recommended by the staff.

Ironman and Deadpool.

Rogue.

Deadpool is the sweeter option between the two drinks, with ice blended blackcurrent and strawberry syrup, while Ironman was sour-sweet and more citrusy. Rogue was sweet and minty, best to beat the heat.

Mancave serves a decent range of main courses for you to pick from. From pasta, to sandwich, and pizza.

If you are looking for a more hearty portion, the Creamy Tom Yam Prawn Pasta (RM14.90) is the one for you. The spaghetti is cooked in a homemade Tom Yum sauce along with pieces of cooked prawns, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes. Delicious but remains light and refreshing.

If you are coming as a pair, Hawaiian Pizza (RM13.90) is good for sharing. Topped with pineapple chunks, chicken, mozarella and cheddar cheese, the dish was great when consumed hot, and the thin crust gives that perfect crunch.

Square Q Mark 1 (RM5.90)

One of the highlights of Mancave Cafe is their mochi waffle. At first glance it may look just like a regular waffle, but one bite is enough to tell the difference.

They have the original waffle Square Q (RM4.90) and Square Q Mark 1 (RM5.90) with several flavours to rotate such as Chocolate, Coffee, Banana and more.

As shown above, you can also opt to consume your mochi waffle with gelato. Named Square Q Mark 2 (RM11.90) in the menu, the waffle was crispy on the outside, yet chewy on the inside. The gelato ice cream at the side was mellow, wonderfully paired with the soft waffle. The portion is suitable for one pax.

Teaming up with a Polish baker, they have crafted a cake menu, from unique flavours like spinach semolina cakes, carrot cakes, depending on the availability of ingredients.

Verdict

Without a doubt, the star attraction of Mancave Cafe is the figurines. They are not for sold, but if you are highly interested to purchase them, you can talk to the staff over the counter or contact one of the co-founder.

Overall it was quite an interesting dining experience in Mancave Cafe. If you are into superhero figurines, you should come to Mancave Cafe at least once. It is a good place to chill with friends and family, have a light snack and drinks.

While there are lots of delicious Curry Mee stalls in the Klang Valley, a good bowl of Penang-style White Curry Mee can be a rare find. Not many stalls in KL nail this dish with the right ingredients, but lucky for White Curry Mee lovers we’ve found the most authentic Penang Curry Mee in Puchong.

This stall is operated by the same family who owns the famous Kuantan Road Penang curry mee in OUG Sun Sea Coffee Shop and Mei Keng Coffee Shop in Petaling Jaya. The stall in Puchong is operated by the father Mr. David Tan while his sons continue to run the OUG and PJ’s stalls.

Exactly like the Penang version, this bowl of of Penang-style White Curry Mee cost RM6.50. It is is topped with prawns, cockles, tofu pok, long beans and pork blood cubes. We loved how they paid attention to the ingredients by ensuring all the basic Penang-style toppings were there.

As you can tell by the picture, this curry mee was freaking delicious. The coconut-enriched curry broth was on the sweeter side and not spicy at all. The slow-cooked dark chili paste adds in so much flavours and aroma to the dish.

The prawns, cockles and pork blood cubes were super fresh and blended well to the curry mee. Portion size was quite decent as we felt full after finishing our bowls.

All in all, this is probably the best place you could get Penang-style Curry Mee in Puchong. We also feel the need to mention that the owner is a super friendly guy who was very hospitable to our pictures and video.

This place opens for breakfast and lunch till late afternoon. Parking is not an issue at all as we reckon the restaurant is not popular yet. There are also other interesting selection of food, especially the Sarawak Kolo mee which we will drop by next time.

If you live in Puchong then you have most likely come across this incredibly popular duck rice restaurant. Soon Lok has been operating at the same spot for way over a decade and is now pretty much the best place for Duck Rice in Puchong. Despite being a popular eatery in a major city, there are virtually no credible reviews of this restaurant on the internet.

Soon Lok is most famous for its signature Charcoal Roasted Duck and while most people pair their duck dishes with rice, Wantan Mee is also available as an option. You will also find a wide range of other tai chow  dishes such as steamed fish, claypot fish head, prawns and more.

Judging from the constant flow of customer and takeaways, and the fact they are one of the longest standing Chinese eatery in Puchong, the food at Soon Lok seemed promising, and indeed it was.

The Roast Duck (1/4 Duck, RM16.50) itself was undoubtedly delicious and we loved it as it had a good balance of salt. Like any roast duck, most flavours are concentrated at the skin part. The cut we had wasn’t too bony and the meat was surprisingly quite meaty and tender.

Upon first bite the first thing that hit us was the fragrant charcoal aroma that still sticks to the meat. And of course,  the freshness of the duck is quite noticeable due to its firm and tender meat throughout.

The roast duck here is served with two sauces, one sweet and one spicy. While the duck was already flavorful enough as it is, the sauces do add even more flavors which is suitable for those with heavy palates.

The Roasted Pork (RM10) here is quite top notch. The roasted pork’s crackling is simply irresistible and it had a good meat and fat ratio on each piece.

The restaurant was quite generous with the portion size of the Bitter Gourd (RM8), especially for its price.

Verdict

After having lunch here, it is clear to see why Soon Lok is often label as the “Best Duck Rice in Puchong”. To be honest, we are not disagreeing with the label. Considering the prices of roast ducks in the Klang Valley, we would say the prices in Soon Lok is justified. Taste-wise, Soon Lok has certainly won us over with itsRoast Duck.

Although there are quite a number of Lok Lok trucks in Puchong, Puchong Lok Lok Street is still the most popular spot to get your cravings fixed.

Puchong Lok Lok street is situated behind Bagunan Pro Ice, the yellow shop lot next to IOI Boulevard. Around 6.00pm when the sun starts to go down, many Lok Lok trucks begin to set up their stalls.

Apart from Lok Lok, there are also a couple of food trucks selling other items, such as Asam Laksa, Chee Cheong Fun, ABC, Prawn Mee, and more.

Just like any other Lok Lok stall, the ordering process is quite standardized – you pick your choices of skewered and dip into boiling water or get it fried in the deep-fry station.  Then you choose your choice of dipping sauce, ranging from chilli, sweet-and-sour, peanut, and spicy sauce.

We  choose skewers of broccoli, cuttlefish, pork balls, and fried squid which cost a total of RM14. It is certainly not affordable even by Lok Lok’s standards. Taste-wise is nothing out of the ordinary either, everything was good but nothing great.

We also ordered a bowl of ABC (RM4) to cool down the spiciness from the Lok Lok sauces. The bowl was quite big however taste wise it was mediocre. Although toppings were generous and the flavours were good, the shaved ice was a tad hard to our liking.

Verdict

Although the food here was nothing special, we personally felt that people come here for the experience. The ambiance accompanied by the wide array of food choices certainly makes this a pretty good place to chill after work.

All in all we think everyone from Puchong should certainly experience Puchong Lok Lok at least once.

P/S: In terms of hygiene you’d probably have to close 1 eye, sigh Malaysians.

While there is no shortage of Nasi Kandar restaurants in the Klang Valley (KL & Selangor) none of them stand a chance against the Nasi Kandar in Penang in terms of taste, authenticity and affordability.

Same can’t be said when it comes to Kok Siong Nasi Kandar at Puchong. Sure, it is not on the level of Tajuddin Hussain or Shariff Nasi Kandar. But considering that you can’t always drive 300km up North, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar is inarguably the next best thing.

Unlike the overpriced curry rice chains such as Kayu and Pelita, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar offers distinctive flavours which is familiar enough to merit comparisons to some nasi kandar in Penang.

The coffee shop gets really crowded during lunch hour as hundreds of patrons come to get fed. Don’t be put off by the long queue of customers at Kok Siong Nasi Kandar stall as service is pretty quick and efficient.

The best sellers here are the fried chicken and mutton curry. We opt for the basic serving consisting of fried chicken, vege, and “kuah campur” which cost RM8.00. The price is certainly not affordable as compared to Line Clear Nasi Kandar which only cost RM5.30.

Nonetheless, we had no qualms paying RM8.00 for this dish as it tasted delicious. The fried chicken smelled robust and had a crispy texture on the outside while remaining juicy and tender on the inside. The chicken was also incredibly fresh as the kakak constantly fried and refilled the fried chicken tray.

While the fried chicken was easily the best part of the dish, the thick and flavourful curries added the extra oomph. The addition of added crunchy bits from the fried chicken provided interesting textures.

Verdict

Turned out, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar was excellent. We were satisfied with the taste and we could see why people are willing to line up. While prices are on the higher side, the dish certainly does justice.
