Lai Ching Yuen is one of the few Cantonese restaurants in a hotel that still serves pork, preserving its essence as an authentic Cantonese restaurant. Last year, we tried their all-you-can-eat dim sum and it was amazing. This time we’re back there to taste some of their signature pork dishes.

A whole Roasted Suckling Pig here costs RM500+ and it is seriously one of the things you got to try. The one we had weighed 1KG and can be shared up to 6 people. It was nicely roasted; the pork had a perfect crisp with great texture and flavour. Do note that this dish is super addictive, if you have one you’ll like keep chowing down more.

If you are keen to try this dish, it is advised to make a reservation as they don’t serve it every day.

Another popular item at Lai Ching Yuen is the Claypot Pork Belly With Salted Fish, where pork belly is cooked in high heat with ginger, a generous amount of scallions and red onion for a bit of texture.

The pork belly slices were juicy and came with enough fat for flavour. Since it was cooked with salted fish, this dish can be a bit one-dimensional in terms flavour—salty, therefore it is best to tone down the saltiness by pairing it with a bowl of white rice.

Next up, we also sampled their Char Siew or Cantonese Style BBQ Pork. As simple as it looks, this is one of our favourite dishes here. There was a good balance of savoury and sweet flavour. We also liked that they are very generous with the meat, it was thick and chunky!

Of course we can’t leave Lai Ching Yuen without ordering their house special Dimsum.

Aside from Siew Mai, we had Deep Fried Bun with Lean Pork. We really liked how crisp and tasty the skin was, and the pork was also nicely seasoned and juicy.

UPDATE: Penang Rood Pork Noodle relocated to Old Fatt Kee @ 20, Jalan Bandar 7, Pusat Bandar Puchong, 47100 Puchong, Selangor

When people talk about Pork Noodle in Puchong, they often think of the popular ones such as Everyday Foodcourt (which used to operate in Fatt Kee). Not long ago, they shifted and a new Pork Noodle stall called Penang Rood Pork Noodle moved in.

Of course, the name might have been spell wrongly intentionally to catch people’s attention. If we were right about the reasoning for the stall’s name, they certainly did a good job.

First thing that you’d notice about the pork noodles here is the slightly nutty brown broth as opposed to the regular clear ones you get elsewhere. It is simply because of using large amounts of pork minced meat which is packed with fat.

While the soup is well cooked with sweet flavour from the pork, the real attractions of the dish are the toppings.

It comes with generous amounts of minced meat, pork meatballs, pork slices, pork intestines and more, making it a wholesome meal even if eaten simply with dry noodle.

For those pork noodle lover out there, if you’d like to try something new, then this probably might be as enjoyable. All and all, it is a delicious and filling meal that we wouldn’t mind returning to.

The Champ Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant located in Solaris Mont Kiara that specialises in Braised Pork Knuckle. The dishes were cooked based on a family recipe originated from the Fujian province of China. It has been passed down for generations since the late 1940s.

That said, it’s a no brainer to order their Drunken Pork Knuckle (RM48 for small/2-4pax) when you’re in The Champ Kitchen. This dish is cooked via traditional cooking methods, which includes tying, oiling, colouring, then braised in a pot for approximately 72 hours.

The Drunken Pork Knuckle is flamed up after a generous amount of Chinese white wine was poured over upon serving. The purpose of this “cooking show” is to further enhance the flavour of their pork knuckle.

The pork knuckle was hands down one of the best pork dishes we’ve ever tasted in Klang Valley. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender, you barely need to chew.

The braised sauce was thick and moderately salty. It’s important to note that the Drunken Pork Knuckle is cooked with natural ingredients and without any added MSG. Hence we didn’t feel any sense of thirst at all after eating it.

Pork is not the only item you can order at The Champ Kitchen because the restaurant also serves lamb which is equally as good.

The Slow-braised NZ Lamb Belly with Fermented Bean Curd Sauce (RM45.50) is what we were talking about. Just like the pork knuckle, it was unbelievably tender; you could cut through them with your spoon. We can’t believe this is a mutton dish as the meat was so soft.

Feel free to enjoy both dishes with Pork Lard Rice (RM3.50) or Ru Rou Rice (RM9).

For a unique pairing with lesser carb intake, try out the the Pork Kunckle Bun (RM7.50 each)! This is a crispy fried mantou paired with juicy pork knuckle meat which complemented each other so well.

The Champ Kitchen also serves dishes that are catered to individual consumption, such as Pork Knuckle Rice (RM15), Curry Pork Knuckle Rice (RM15), and Pork Knuckle Spicy Noodle (RM23.50).

Among all 3 ala carte dishes, we reckon the two rice dishes would satisfy those who come to dine in The Champ Kitchen during lunch hour, as both dishes are fuss free and you can eat without the fear of smudging your office attire.

So, here’s the history about Chui Lau Sinn. This newly opened restaurant in Cheras is helmed by the son of the reputed Aunty Helen who’s famous for her Hokkien Mee at Jalar Alor. Aunty Helen started out with a hawker stall in the year 1976 and quickly established herself as one of the best Hokkien Mee spots in Kuala Lumpur.

Aunty Helen’s Hokkien Mee is so good that it caught the attention of Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore which pays Aunty Helen a royalty fee for using her recipe in one of their food court stalls. With her popularity and success, Aunty Helen’s son (who has been her helper since he was Form 2) decided to expand her hawker stall into a full-fledged restaurant.

We feel that we should mention that Aunty Helen was surprisingly approachable and friendly. Unlike most hot-tempered popular hawker stall owners who won’t give face to their customers, Aunty Helen is still humble and friendly to all her customers.

Despite expending into a restaurant, nothing much has change as Aunty Helen is usually the one who fries her signature Hokkien Mee, Lou Shu Fun and more. Aunt Helen’s son ensured us that there are no foreign cooks in the kitchen which is often a positive sign.

Taste wise the dark and luscious Hokkien Mee (S) @ RM9.90 was excellent with a good amount of textures from the crunchy pork lards. It was incredibly tasty with an in-depth smoky and rich flavour, not just sweet or salty.

Fried Lou Shu Fun @ RM18.90 is also one of Chui Lau Sinn’s signature dishes. This dish is catered to those who prefer something spicy. However if you have low heat tolerance we suggest you stick with the Hokkien Mee instead.

While it definitely looks like a regular rice dish, the Braised Yee Mee (S) @ RM10.90 was perfectly fried in the wok. While eating this we realise how fresh and succulent the prawns are, simply delicious. Although we tried the small variant, the portion size was big enough for 2 people.

If you don’t fancy Chinese noodle dishes, you may opt for Chui Lau Sinn’s Hang Zhou Fried Rice (S) @ RM9.90.

Size dishes such as Nam Yu Fried Pork @ RM13.90 and Bacon Roll @ RM14.90 are also available.

It does always feel good to support a family run business that employs local cooks. As far as the food here is concerned, Chui Lau Sinn now ranks as one of our best place for Hokkien Mee in Kuala Lumpur.

This article is written in collaboration with Restaurant Chui Lau Sinn.

Lai Ching Yuen is one of the very few top notch Cantonese restaurants in Kuala Lumpur that serves high quality all-you-can-eat dim sum. With over 50 types of handcrafted delights and an affordable price tag of RM74 per pax, Lai Ching Yuen’s ala-carte all-you-can-eat dim sum is a steal.

Despite it is a buffet concept, the dim sum is not placed at a designated corner for you to retrieve. Instead, you place your order on the order chit and give it to the waiters, which is a plus point as you don’t have to snatch your food with other people.

Variety wise, the dim sum menu is divided into 6 categories, steamed dim sum, deep fried dim sum, baked dim sum, porridge, steamed rice rolls (chee cheong fun) and desserts.

Steamed Siew Mai with Fish Roe – the size of this is bigger than what’s usually served in Chinese coffee shop. The skin was soft and firm and did not break when lifted with chopsticks. The meat inside tasted real and not frozen and Fish Roe was a nice touch.

Steamed Prawn Dumpling – delicious and a must try here. One of the best value as well if you intend to get your money’s worth.

Steam BBQ Pork Bun – as simple as it looks, this is one of our favourite dishes here. We enjoyed the bun’s soft texture and smooth and savory filling.

Steam Glutinous Rice with Lard Meat – although it doesn’t come with lotus leaf, it was still packed with a punch of flavours and aroma.

Deep-fried Bean Curd Roll with Shrimp – those who love fried dim sum or prawns should try this best-seller.

Steamed Custard Bun With Egg Yolk – the custard filling was runny and beautifully flows out as you tear the soft buns. The salted egg yolk was rich and delicious and we were pleasantly surprised with the amount of fillings used.

Deep-Fried Yam Puff

Pan-Fried Bun with Salted Fish

Pan-Fried Pork Dumpling Chive

Steamed Rice Roll With Preserved Vegetables And Meat

Steamed Spinach Dumpling With Preserved Vegetables

Steamed Rice Rolls With Shrimp

Szechuan Style Steamed Wanton

Steamed Dumpling Soup with Assorted Seafood

Pan-Fried Tofu with Chilli Flakes

Verdict

Overall it was a satisfying feast, especially for the price you’re paying. The dim sums here are no doubt delicious and top notch quality. Furthermore service was efficient as the chefs are quite knowledgeable with their product.

Lai Ching Yuen is also one of the few Cantonese restaurants in a hotel that still serves pork, preserving its essence as an authentic Cantonese restaurant.

Meat The Porkers had always been on our MUST TRY Indian restaurant list. Fortunately for us, the founder Mr. Herukh recently invited us to sample some of the restaurant’s classic as well as some new dishes.

If we are not mistaken, Meat The Porkers is the first Porky Indian restaurant in Malaysia and possibly Southeast Asia. Think of the place to get your pork craving fixed, Indian style. Mr. Herukh is also the brain behind the popular Fierce Curry House which is why we knew the food here is going to be freaking delicious.

Mr. Herukh explained to us on how each pork cuts are carefully selected to compliment the nature of a particular dish. Simply put, Meat The Porkers does not simply add pork in Indian dishes just for the sake of being unique. Instead, multiple research and development is done before selecting a pork cut for a particular dish.

The Tandoori Pork Ribs (RM48) is a perfect example of Meat The Porkers executing a porky infused dish perfectly. The pork ribs was quite tender and well marinated, we can even taste the strong tandoori flavours inside the pork’s flesh. We thought this was one of the best dishes in the restaurant as we enjoy the well marinated flavours and tenderness of the pork ribs.

While the Tandoori Pork Ribs was flavourful on its own, it is still served with traditional mint sauce, homemade tamarind sauce and shredded coconut.

Unlike most tandoori dishes in restaurant, the tandoori pork ribs at Meat The Porkers are freshly roasted in the clay oven upon ordering. This will ensure the tandoori flavours is fresh well marinated inside the flesh.

We were told by Mr. Herukh that Tandoori Pork Ribs was one of the hardest dishes to get right. The rib doesn’t stay on the metal stick while coking in the tandoori oven, hence a potato is impaled at the edge of the metal to ensure the ribs stays on the stick while cooking.

Of course, to complete Tandoori experience we had their Bacon Cheese Naan (RM15). This is yet another dish where pork-infusion done right. The bacon and cheese adds much needed dept and flavours. The naan was delightfully tasty and amazingly crispy just the way we love it.

One of the most known dish is Siew Yoke Biryani Rice (RM28) which went viral last year due to its uniqueness. Thanks to the viral effect and taste to back it up, this dish is still going strong today.  Taste-wise, the rice was fluffy and aromatic as it was infused with strong spices. The siew yoke was tender and was well-infused in the biryani flavours.

The crispy part of siew yoke was served separately to avoid it from turning soggy during the cooking process. Overall, we were satisfied with the Siew Yoke Briyani and we could see why it is so popular.

Palak Paneer (RM22) and Pork Rogan Josh (RM28) was pretty alright as well. We loved the addition of feta cheese as it blended well with the Palak Paneer’s consistency. The Pork Rogan Josh was a little too spicy to our liking but still quite flavourful.

Another gravy-based dish we had was the Butter Pork (RM30). Taste-wise, this was one of the dish we’ve tried in Meat the Porkers. The pork was cooked to perfection with roasted tomato, butter and spices which resulted in a thick and creamy texture. It was mildly spicy and just one sip of this amazing gravy was enough to tantalize our taste buds.

As a part of their new menu, Meat the Porkers is introducing a number of Mexican influenced dishes such as Chicken 65 Tacos (RM30).

In hindsight we probably should have gotten the porky taco instead of chicken. Anyway, the Chicken 65 Taco is stuffed with boneless chicken, chunks of homemade sauce and Mexican tomato salsa. We found the chicken to be nicely seasoned and cooked well as it was quite tender and flavourful.

Located in front of Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is Keong Kee Herbal Soup and Mushroom Pan Mee. This no-frills dinner place is usually packed with customers from evening onward.

Keong Kee Herbal Soup serves a handful of Chinese food and also one would call “exotic” food. Some of the exotic food items are their flying squirrel, white pigeon, and terrapin.

There are a couple of soups to choose from and we ordered the Coconut Chicken Soup (RM11), it’s essentially steamed herbal coconut chicken soup served in an actual old coconut. Does it make a difference in the taste? Many times it’s just our mind that persuades us but nonetheless the soup is delicious and flavour packed;  salty from the chicken, sweet from the coconut flesh.

It’s also worth mentioning that this dish came with large pieces of Chicken breast which was tender.

Moving onto the more “exotic” dish, pork lovers would love the Wild Boar Curry (RM7.50). It’s a bowl of wild boar pieces, complemented by the fragrance of thick curry broth, sprinkled with cilantro. The wild board was tender so it was a pleasure to enjoy. The curry was thick and has a hint of spiciness to it, it’s perfect for those with heavy flavoured taste buds.

Mushroom Pan Mee (RM5.50) from the stall beside is a must if you’re a pan mee lover. Not only the pan mee is affordable, the dish truly lives up to its name as the broth was sweet and fragrant of mushroom flavour. We liked how they were generous with the mushrooms and the noodles were silky smooth.

Open daily from 5PM onward, get in early and try their exotic dishes. Opt for the Coconut Chicken Soup if you want something out of the ordinary.

YG Republique’s Samgeori Butcher’s has been making waves especially in the social media, mostly due to the fact that this eatery is owned by YG Entertainment, a South Korean Entertainment Company that’s home to Korean artists such as Big Bang and 2NE1.

Located smack in the middle of bistros and bars of TREC Kuala Lumpur is the infamous YG Republique’s Samgeori Butcher’s, a Korean BBQ grill restaurant that prides on serving premium pork (Spanish Black Iberico Pork) and beef cuts.

A decent atmosphere with a strong “porkilicious” and K-Pop themes – pig balloons, autographs of the YG stars, and framed photos of pork cuts are attention grabbing to say the least.

Samgeori Butcher’s claims that their meats are cured with Cypress Pine which enhances the flavours and textures. Unlike many Korean BBQs out there, the meat cuts are not served with lettuce because the rich quality of meat cuts are meant to be savoured without additional wrapper. Nonetheless, you can still order lettuce if you MUST wrap your meat.

As expected in all Korean BBQ grill restaurants, Banchan (side dishes) are refillable but not the drinks.

Butcher’s Sampler (RM170 for 2 pax) 420g

The 3 premium cuts that were served are Pork Neck, Pork Shoulder and Pork Belly, best shared with a group of 2 pax.

For all the hype of the “premium quality meat”, we must say that the taste was not up to par – the meat were under-marinating, it ended up tasting like mild and flavorless pieces of meat. Especially for the price of RM170, the meal was utterly disappointing. Nothing taste premium or extraordinary. Needless to say, the meat cuts weren’t even delicious.

Butcher’s Pork Fried Rice (RM50 2 Pax)

The usual Kimchi Fried Rice with a great amount of pork meat, kimchi, topped with 3 sunny side. This dish tastes as good as it looks, spicy and aromatic. Although fried rice is a dish you simply can’t go wrong, hence a mamak nasi goreng for RM5 would do your wallet justice.

The picture shown above is for 3 pax portion, suitable for big groups.

The BBQ cooking demonstration was carried out by YG’s Korean chef named Ji Byung Kwon who was based at Samgeori Butcher’s in Hongdae, Korea, leading the kitchen at YG Republique in KL for six months. While the waiters are Bangladeshi workers.

Verdict

The dining atmosphere was alright and our dining experiences weren’t particularly bad. For the price you’d think that they’d provide top notch service and hospitality but no. Services was below normal standards. It was lunch hour and although the restaurant was virtually empty, service was poor to say the least. We felt the staff were lacking warmth and we waited over 20 minutes for drinks that never came.

All-in-all, YG Republique has a lot to improve on in terms of food and services.

If you want to indulge in Korean BBQ grill restaurant with YG artists songs, this is an option. The Pork Fried Rice was good. we didn’t care much for the rest of the items.
