You’ve probably heard of Akka Nasi Lemak on social media, and for good reason. What started as a small Nasi Lemak stall in a quiet Seri Kembangan neighborhood has now expanded to serve over 500 customers, and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Where it all started

On earlier April 2023, we discovered a humble Indian lady selling nasi lemak from a social media post. We decided to film a short video introducing this place to all social media users.

Friendly Indian Lady Selling Nasi Lemak with Many Toppings at Seri Kembangan – Akka Nasi Lemak @ Seri Kembangan

Indian Nasi Lemak run by a friendly Akka in Seri Kembangan 💁🏽‍♀️😍

While editing the video, we realized that the stall did not have any online presence, Google Map address, or even a name.

Hence, we decided to give it the name Akka Nasi Lemak and create a Google Map address so that people could navigate to this stall after watching our video. We called it Akka Nasi Lemak because the owner referred to all her lady customers as ‘Akka.’

The video blew up on our Facebook, TikTok, and even our neglected Instagram account. The stall was then featured on many media platforms such as Astro, THR Raaga, and countless random TikTok users.

The birth of Akka Nasi Lemak

Meet Sangeetha Manimalar, the 34-year-old mother who runs Akka Nasi Lemak. Having a hotel management background, the mother of two has been selling nasi lemak for more than 10 years. However, her stall instantly become a “viral” sensation on social media in the month of April, which falls on the Ramadan month.

Her dishes are abundance, you can find Ayam Masak Merah, Ayam Rendang, Ayam Goreng Berempah, Sambal Kerang and Sambal Sotong. No pork is used or serve in her stall. Furthermore she offers two types of sambal, spicy and normal, as well as two types of rice, namely santan rice and pandan rice.

A warrior in the culinary

Nothing great ever came that easy. According to Sangeetha’s interview in Astro Naavanil, she shared that her husband and children was met in an accident. The children have recovered but her husband is still on a recovering stage. But Sangeetha manages her life and the livelihood of her family with the little money earned.

When “Akka Nasi Lemak” started gaining popularity, it attracts all sort of walks, people around Selangor, KL and even Singapore, to line up starting at 12am just to get a taste of her food, almost equates to celebrity fans camp out for concert tickets.

With a sudden increase of customers, she has already enlisted some extra hands to help her. In particularly, her neighbour who’s a friendly Chinese aunty is helping her as well, without asking for single salary.

Unfazed by nonsense

It’s safe to assume that fame attract haters. Despite some mishaps during the stall, Akka Nasi Lemak is going strong. To ensure everyone customers who line up able to purchase her food, token will be given to everyone and every customer can buy maximum of 5 packets of nasi lemak.

Furthermore, Sangeetha’s news has caught attention of Vice-President of Angkatan Muda Keadilan Malaysia Thiban Subbramaniam to help in registry of her business.

Although there are quite a number of Lok Lok trucks in Puchong, Puchong Lok Lok Street is still the most popular spot to get your cravings fixed.

Puchong Lok Lok street is situated behind Bagunan Pro Ice, the yellow shop lot next to IOI Boulevard. Around 6.00pm when the sun starts to go down, many Lok Lok trucks begin to set up their stalls.

Apart from Lok Lok, there are also a couple of food trucks selling other items, such as Asam Laksa, Chee Cheong Fun, ABC, Prawn Mee, and more.

Just like any other Lok Lok stall, the ordering process is quite standardized – you pick your choices of skewered and dip into boiling water or get it fried in the deep-fry station.  Then you choose your choice of dipping sauce, ranging from chilli, sweet-and-sour, peanut, and spicy sauce.

We  choose skewers of broccoli, cuttlefish, pork balls, and fried squid which cost a total of RM14. It is certainly not affordable even by Lok Lok’s standards. Taste-wise is nothing out of the ordinary either, everything was good but nothing great.

We also ordered a bowl of ABC (RM4) to cool down the spiciness from the Lok Lok sauces. The bowl was quite big however taste wise it was mediocre. Although toppings were generous and the flavours were good, the shaved ice was a tad hard to our liking.

Verdict

Although the food here was nothing special, we personally felt that people come here for the experience. The ambiance accompanied by the wide array of food choices certainly makes this a pretty good place to chill after work.

All in all we think everyone from Puchong should certainly experience Puchong Lok Lok at least once.

P/S: In terms of hygiene you’d probably have to close 1 eye, sigh Malaysians.

While there’s no shortage of delicious food in Subang Jaya area, finding the right Nasi Lemak stall can be an overwhelming experience as there too many options available.

Tucked away in a less bustling side of Subang Jaya, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is located prominently outside of Sime Darby Medical Centre. According to the owner, this stall has been operating for 20 years at the same spot, which says a lot about their credibility.

One thing about this humble nasi lemak stalls that stands out is the wide array of lauk-pauk everything from beef rendang, prawn & petai sambal, beef lungs, and more are available. Aside from nasi lemak, nasi kukus is also sold here.

Much like most Nasi Lemak stalls, you will be served a standard plate of coconut rice, anchovies, egg and cucumber topped with sambal. Then you proceed with the lauk of your choice and the mak cik will add them for you. We went with 2 toppings for each nasi lemak dish.

Nasi Lemak with Daging Rendang and Paru (RM9)

Get ready to drool if you love sambal. The sambal by Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 was fiery, in a good way. Every bite mixed with the meat was bursting with flavours, and it should satisfy your palates if you’re into spicy food.

The beef rendang was wonderfully marinated, packed a savoury punch would make you feel sad at your last bite. On top of that, they nailed it with the beef lungs. If you tried beef lungs before you’d know that it’s a dish that difficult to perfect, however the beef lungs here was easy on the mouth, just the right texture.

Nasi Lemak with Petai Prawn and Squid (RM12)

One of the must-eats at the Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is their highly recommended Prawn & Petai, where prawn is cooked to perfection. Although it’s cooked with petai, the taste and smell of stink beans was not too overpowering to the sambal.

The squid was particularly big. It’s bigger than what you would usually find in a typical nasi lemak stall. The texture of the squid was surprisingly tender and it soaked up the sambal that was cooked with it well.

Nasi Kukus (RM7)

This dish looked promising and tasted even better. The acar alongside the rice was crunchy and gave the dish a distinguish flavour when eaten together with the rice. The fried chicken was nicely marinated, and fried to perfection, further complementing the dish.

Wash all the spiciness down with some Thai Ice Tea (RM6) and Thai Green Tea (RM6).

Verdict

All in all, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is indeed a hidden gem. All dishes we ordered makes up for an incredibly satisfying lunch. While there are many nasi lemak stalls around town, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 particularly stands out for its wide array of toppings and delicious flavours. We can foresee ourselves coming back to this stall in the near future.
