Despite the secluded location Sulaiman Cendol is one of the most popular eateries in Kuala Lumpur. This legendary cendol stall has been operating for over 35 years and is commonly regarded as one of the best foods in eat around Pudu.

In case you’re wondering, yes that’s not Uncle Sulaiman whom you’d usually expect to see. We visited this stall during the long Hari Raya Holiday, hence Uncle Sulaiman had gone back to his hometown. Taking his place is a charismatic young chap who works at a super-fast pace. We found him to be extremely approachable, friendly and accommodating to our video and photography.

Prices are quite cheap as a Cendol Biasa cost RM1.40 each. It’s probably the cheapest cendol in Kuala Lumpur. However do set your expectations straight as this basic bowl comes with absolutely no toppings besides the green jelly.

You’re much better off spending an extra 60cents for Cendol Special @ RM2 which comes with generous amounts of toppings. The strong flavours from fresh toppings boost the flavours making the Cendol Special much more delicious than the latter. The ratio of coconut milk to palm sugar was perfect and the level of sweetness was spot on.

Impressed with the Cendol Special, we decided to give ABC @ RM2.50 a try. We enjoyed the generous amounts of toppings which includes multi-colored pears, peanuts and jelly cubes. Portion wise, it’s enough to feed 2 people.

If you’re coming here expecting to be blown away by the Cendol you will go home disappointed. Don’t get us wrong, the Cendol and ABC was quite delicious but not special enough to warrant a special trip to Pudu. Nevertheless, if you are nearby this particular area, it’s certainly worth a try.

At RM2 Per Bowl with the generous amounts of toppings, we’d say it’s certainly value for money and a good refreshing treat to enjoy during a hot day.

If you are seeking for an Indian-style Claypot Curry Rice, you might want to check out Satti Sorru stall which operates at Ban Heng Chinese coffee shop. Indian claypots dishes are a rare find, especially ones that offers exotic meat such as Monitor Lizard and Wild boar.

If the number of claypots one the stove is a measure for success for this business, then this stall is winning tremendously as each stove is always occupied with at least one claypot.

The workers here were quite friendly and accommodating to our camera. If you’re lucky, the cooking will be done by the boss himself.

There are 4 types of Claypot curries you can choose – Monitor Lizard (RM15), Mutton (RM12), Wild Boar (RM10) and Chicken (RM8). Naturally we opted for the Monitor Lizard as it is a rare find around the Klang Valley.

We must say, watching the cooking process of this Indian Claypot Curry Rice was certainly therapeutic. Each Claypot dish is cooked with creamy masala paste, pineapple, onions, Indian spices, your choice of meat, and rice. If you have low heat tolerance you can request for less spicy version as dishes are cooked to order.

Upon taking the first bite, it was apparently that the dish was rich and flavourful. It had a strong spicy kick and an overall moist texture. The dish lacks long lasting heat as only gas stove was used. We personally found the monitor lizard’s to be extremely bony and felt we should have opt for the wild boar instead.

It took about 15 minutes for our dish to arrive because we are the first customer. Apparently it usually takes over 30 minutes to be serve as the boss has lots of orders.

Verdict

All in all, Satti Sorru did not disappoint for us as it was cooked by the boss himself. Although we weren’t impressed with the monitor lizard, at least our curiosity was fulfilled so we had no regrets.

While there is certainly no shortage of Claypot Chicken Rice dishes in the Klang Valley, it can be quite tough to find a significantly good one. Most claypot rice here are either too mushy, or lacked of aroma in our opinion.

So when we found out about Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice we jumped to try it as it is widely regarded as one of the best-tasting Claypot Chicken Rice in Kuala Lumpur.

Located near the Pudu wet market at Jalan Yew, Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice has been around for more than 30 years. The restaurant was founded by Madam Heun, a friendly auntie who started off with a small hawker stall at the Petaling Jaya Old Town wet market.

Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice still uses charcoal stove used charcoal stoves to cook the rice. Apparently, using charcoal makes a significant difference in the taste as it gives the dish an overall better flavour and aroma.

A standard bowl of Claypot Chicken Rice (S) (RM12.50) with added egg (RM1.50) and extra chinese sausages (RM5) was enough to be shared between the two of us. However if you are a big eater we highly suggest you opt for the medium portion which cost RM22.

As we mix everything in the claypot while it was still pipping hot, a strong and smoky aroma hits us hard. Although we opt for extra chinese sausage, the restaurant was quiet generous with their chicken meat. Salted fish is given separately on top of the rice.

Taste-wise, the rice was soft and fluffy, with each grain distinct and moist but not mushy. The chicken pieces in the claypot were well marinated with flavours of soy, sesame oil, chinese wine and a hint of ginger. Although we added the entire salted fish the saltiness wasn’t too overpowering. In fact it gave a good balance of salty flavour and enhanced the overall dish.

We notice that the Claypot Chicken Rice was piping hot throughout our entire meal. We believe this must be the benefit of cooking over charcoal as the heat tends to remain longer.

While you are here, try the Pig Stomach Soup (RM11) to go with our rice. It was a light but flavorsome soup that balance out the heat from the claypot rice.

Verdict

Simply put, Heun Kee Claypot Chicken Rice is one of (if not) the best Claypot Chicken Rice in Kuala Lumpur. The claypot dishes here was perfectly cooked and taste quite delicious. The only downside of this restaurant is that it is cooked by foreigners as Madam Heun already passed down the skills to her workers.

Nonetheless, they were skillful in their craft and needless to say we will visit Heun Kee again. We will probably have the Waxed Duck Pot Rice as we were told it is pretty good.

Located in front of Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is Keong Kee Herbal Soup and Mushroom Pan Mee. This no-frills dinner place is usually packed with customers from evening onward.

Keong Kee Herbal Soup serves a handful of Chinese food and also one would call “exotic” food. Some of the exotic food items are their flying squirrel, white pigeon, and terrapin.

There are a couple of soups to choose from and we ordered the Coconut Chicken Soup (RM11), it’s essentially steamed herbal coconut chicken soup served in an actual old coconut. Does it make a difference in the taste? Many times it’s just our mind that persuades us but nonetheless the soup is delicious and flavour packed;  salty from the chicken, sweet from the coconut flesh.

It’s also worth mentioning that this dish came with large pieces of Chicken breast which was tender.

Moving onto the more “exotic” dish, pork lovers would love the Wild Boar Curry (RM7.50). It’s a bowl of wild boar pieces, complemented by the fragrance of thick curry broth, sprinkled with cilantro. The wild board was tender so it was a pleasure to enjoy. The curry was thick and has a hint of spiciness to it, it’s perfect for those with heavy flavoured taste buds.

Mushroom Pan Mee (RM5.50) from the stall beside is a must if you’re a pan mee lover. Not only the pan mee is affordable, the dish truly lives up to its name as the broth was sweet and fragrant of mushroom flavour. We liked how they were generous with the mushrooms and the noodles were silky smooth.

Open daily from 5PM onward, get in early and try their exotic dishes. Opt for the Coconut Chicken Soup if you want something out of the ordinary.

Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is a hip and trendy 4-star hotel located at Pudu, a stone throw away from the shopping belt of KL such as Berjaya Time Square and Pavilion KL. Run by its parents company AccorHotels, Mercure Hotel is the first Mercure brand in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Bookings.com, a 2D1N stay at Mecure Hotel would cost RM250 (excluding tax).

Checking In

Upon arrival at the Mercure Hotel on a Saturday afternoon, we eagerly made our way through the lobby to check-in with the staff. Check in time was at 3PM however, we were told to wait an extra hour as the room was not yet ready and the hotel was fully booked. So we waited at the lobby and there were no apologies or even courtesy drinks were given.

The Deluxe Queen room that we stayed isn’t spacious but is good enough for 2 pax. The room is also well-appointed with essentials such as an electric kettle, air conditioning, LED flat screen TV, safe box, shower, cupboard, complimentary WiFi throughout the premises, and an incredibly plush and comfortable bed.

Other highlights were the cosy day lounge sofa perched by the floor-to-ceiling windows, ideal for chilling and the decent view of Bukit Bintang area.

Our only gripe about the room was the lack of soundproofing, it was extremely irritating to hear loud conversations in the corridor and people opening and closing their room doors. Especially when it’s 12:30AM and you’re trying to get some quality sleep.

Facilities

The outdoor pool and bar on the 20th floor provide a decent view of Bukit Bintang city. The pool was much smaller than what you’d expect from a 4 star hotel. When it gets crowded it can be very uncomfortable as there’s almost no room for swimming. There is also a fitness studio which comes with cardio machines, free weights, exercise balls and mats.

Mercure Hotel’s sole restaurant, Chorak was disappointing. The quality of the food was utterly bad, even food from the mamak stall is better quality than what we had. Food items such as the fried noodle and fried rice tasted blend. There were very few choices, especially for a 4-star restaurant.

Verdict

While Mercure Hotel may not be the best hotel we’ve stayed as there were many misses, our stay is still considerably decent. Despite the bad soundproof, the room is pretty relaxing and comfortable. The hotel is waking distance to many eateries, such as a mamak store, and Chinese eateries. Convenience stores like 7-11 and 99 Speedmart are also skirt around the premise.

All in all, Mercure Hotel is an alright place to stay if you’re ONLY expecting a comfortable room and a good location. It’s an ideal accommodation if you’re after a shopping spree at the city’s Golden Triangle area.
