The Champ Kitchen is a Chinese restaurant located in Solaris Mont Kiara that specialises in Braised Pork Knuckle. The dishes were cooked based on a family recipe originated from the Fujian province of China. It has been passed down for generations since the late 1940s.

That said, it’s a no brainer to order their Drunken Pork Knuckle (RM48 for small/2-4pax) when you’re in The Champ Kitchen. This dish is cooked via traditional cooking methods, which includes tying, oiling, colouring, then braised in a pot for approximately 72 hours.

The Drunken Pork Knuckle is flamed up after a generous amount of Chinese white wine was poured over upon serving. The purpose of this “cooking show” is to further enhance the flavour of their pork knuckle.

The pork knuckle was hands down one of the best pork dishes we’ve ever tasted in Klang Valley. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender, you barely need to chew.

The braised sauce was thick and moderately salty. It’s important to note that the Drunken Pork Knuckle is cooked with natural ingredients and without any added MSG. Hence we didn’t feel any sense of thirst at all after eating it.

Pork is not the only item you can order at The Champ Kitchen because the restaurant also serves lamb which is equally as good.

The Slow-braised NZ Lamb Belly with Fermented Bean Curd Sauce (RM45.50) is what we were talking about. Just like the pork knuckle, it was unbelievably tender; you could cut through them with your spoon. We can’t believe this is a mutton dish as the meat was so soft.

Feel free to enjoy both dishes with Pork Lard Rice (RM3.50) or Ru Rou Rice (RM9).

For a unique pairing with lesser carb intake, try out the the Pork Kunckle Bun (RM7.50 each)! This is a crispy fried mantou paired with juicy pork knuckle meat which complemented each other so well.

The Champ Kitchen also serves dishes that are catered to individual consumption, such as Pork Knuckle Rice (RM15), Curry Pork Knuckle Rice (RM15), and Pork Knuckle Spicy Noodle (RM23.50).

Among all 3 ala carte dishes, we reckon the two rice dishes would satisfy those who come to dine in The Champ Kitchen during lunch hour, as both dishes are fuss free and you can eat without the fear of smudging your office attire.

The Majapahit in Arcoris Mont Kiara serves traditional and modern fusion of Southeast Asian cuisine. Despite marketing themselves as a Thai-Indonesian restaurant, the menu also made up of other Southeast Asian dishes from Malaysia and Vietnam.

To ensure the authenticity of its food, The Majapahit appointed an Indonesian chef who has extensive cooking experience for more than 25 years in Indonesian cuisine. On top of that, the chef previously served at the award-winning Thai restaurant Ginger in Kuala Lumpur.

The restaurant’s high ceiling, extensive windows and pleasant decor allows lots of room for natural light and beautiful Instagram pictures.

In order to enjoy The Majapahit dishes to the fullest, it is best to come here in big groups, ideally among 4 to 6 person because many items on the menu are meant for sharing. For instance the Satay of Southeast Asia (RM52), Curry Galore (RM52), The Royal Wings (RM48).

Satay of Southeast Asia

The platter comes with Balinese fish satay, Malaysian chicken satay, Indonesian beef satay and Vietnamese sugarcane prawn with homemade dipping sauces.

Curry Galore

Feast on four signature curry in The Majapahit; Thai Red Curry Beef, Thai Green Curry Chicken, Indonesian Squid Curry and Malaysian Prawn Curry served with chapati bread and cassava crackers.

The Royal Wings

A trio of juicy chicken wings tossed in Indonesian Sweet Sauce, Malaysian Spicy Sambal and Thai Sauce.

Sharing dishes are also available here for “tai chou” style dining experience. For butter chicken fans, their Coconut Butter Chicken (RM25) is highly suggested. Here, the butter gravy was cooked with margarine, cream, and coconut milk. As a result the dish is more thick and flavoured packed compared with the regular butter chicken.

Tom Yam is a must when it comes to Thai food, and The Majapahit’s Spicy Seafood Tom Yam (RM32) was exceptional. We presumed that the spiciness would be toned down because of its expatriate demographic, turns out we were wrong. A generous amount of prawns, squids and fishes submerged in the spicy soup which was fragrant with lemongrass and kaffir lime.

One of the restaurant’s signature dish is the iconic Crispy Flying Fish (RM52). The fish was presented beautifully and deep fried till crispy, served together with sweet and spicy dark sauce.

Thai Stir-fried Baby Kailan (RM29)

Vietnamese Drip Coffee (RM13)

Overall, it was a positive experience and we were quite satisfied with the food and service despite the fact this was an invited review. So, if you’re looking for somewhere special to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary or a special gathering, The Majapahit Restaurant is a good option.

Meat The Porkers had always been on our MUST TRY Indian restaurant list. Fortunately for us, the founder Mr. Herukh recently invited us to sample some of the restaurant’s classic as well as some new dishes.

If we are not mistaken, Meat The Porkers is the first Porky Indian restaurant in Malaysia and possibly Southeast Asia. Think of the place to get your pork craving fixed, Indian style. Mr. Herukh is also the brain behind the popular Fierce Curry House which is why we knew the food here is going to be freaking delicious.

Mr. Herukh explained to us on how each pork cuts are carefully selected to compliment the nature of a particular dish. Simply put, Meat The Porkers does not simply add pork in Indian dishes just for the sake of being unique. Instead, multiple research and development is done before selecting a pork cut for a particular dish.

The Tandoori Pork Ribs (RM48) is a perfect example of Meat The Porkers executing a porky infused dish perfectly. The pork ribs was quite tender and well marinated, we can even taste the strong tandoori flavours inside the pork’s flesh. We thought this was one of the best dishes in the restaurant as we enjoy the well marinated flavours and tenderness of the pork ribs.

While the Tandoori Pork Ribs was flavourful on its own, it is still served with traditional mint sauce, homemade tamarind sauce and shredded coconut.

Unlike most tandoori dishes in restaurant, the tandoori pork ribs at Meat The Porkers are freshly roasted in the clay oven upon ordering. This will ensure the tandoori flavours is fresh well marinated inside the flesh.

We were told by Mr. Herukh that Tandoori Pork Ribs was one of the hardest dishes to get right. The rib doesn’t stay on the metal stick while coking in the tandoori oven, hence a potato is impaled at the edge of the metal to ensure the ribs stays on the stick while cooking.

Of course, to complete Tandoori experience we had their Bacon Cheese Naan (RM15). This is yet another dish where pork-infusion done right. The bacon and cheese adds much needed dept and flavours. The naan was delightfully tasty and amazingly crispy just the way we love it.

One of the most known dish is Siew Yoke Biryani Rice (RM28) which went viral last year due to its uniqueness. Thanks to the viral effect and taste to back it up, this dish is still going strong today.  Taste-wise, the rice was fluffy and aromatic as it was infused with strong spices. The siew yoke was tender and was well-infused in the biryani flavours.

The crispy part of siew yoke was served separately to avoid it from turning soggy during the cooking process. Overall, we were satisfied with the Siew Yoke Briyani and we could see why it is so popular.

Palak Paneer (RM22) and Pork Rogan Josh (RM28) was pretty alright as well. We loved the addition of feta cheese as it blended well with the Palak Paneer’s consistency. The Pork Rogan Josh was a little too spicy to our liking but still quite flavourful.

Another gravy-based dish we had was the Butter Pork (RM30). Taste-wise, this was one of the dish we’ve tried in Meat the Porkers. The pork was cooked to perfection with roasted tomato, butter and spices which resulted in a thick and creamy texture. It was mildly spicy and just one sip of this amazing gravy was enough to tantalize our taste buds.

As a part of their new menu, Meat the Porkers is introducing a number of Mexican influenced dishes such as Chicken 65 Tacos (RM30).

In hindsight we probably should have gotten the porky taco instead of chicken. Anyway, the Chicken 65 Taco is stuffed with boneless chicken, chunks of homemade sauce and Mexican tomato salsa. We found the chicken to be nicely seasoned and cooked well as it was quite tender and flavourful.

Nooks by Baker Dave is one of our favourite cafes to visit in the Klang Valley. This is mainly because dining here always gives out warm and relaxing vibes. More importantly, you will be served by locals or by the owner, Mr David himself. A revisit to Nooks by Baker Dave last weekend was a pleasant one as food and service quality was still up to par.

One of our favourite dishes here is Spicy Carbonara (RM21) and it tasted just as delicious as it was a year ago. While the pasta sauce by itself was already creamy, the creative addition of raw egg yolk gave out an even more rich and thick flavours.

We were incredibly surprise on how generous the café was with the toppings. There were loads of ham, shitake mushroom and cheese all mixed in their spicy creamy sauce. For someone who doesn’t fancy pasta dishes, we have to concede that this is seriously delicious.

For something fun, try the Jenga French Toast (RM21.90) which is basically homemade toast with some seasonal fruits, drizzled in maple syrup. While this dish takes French Toast to a whole new level and provides some interesting Instagram pictures, it was pretty basic. That’s not to say it was bad, it’s just a pretty normal dish. But if you fancy simple-tasting food, then you might like this.

Another dish that we truly enjoyed was the Affogato Waffle (RM16.90). The texture of the waffle is soft and chewy and it went well with the thick espresso flavours mixed in vanilla ice cream.  The portion is suitable for 1 pax.

The stunning Passion Fruit Yogurt (RM15.90) incorporates the unique combination flavours of yogurt, granola, honey and passion fruit (imported by the owner’s farm). This dessert is all about the textures and strong yogurt flavours in every bite. It might not be suitable for those who prefer smooth dessert textures, but we found the dish to be pretty good.

Verdict

Needless to say it was a pleasant revisit experience. It warms our hearts to see that Nooks by Baker Dave continues to strive in business while having very little online media coverage. Yes, as of writing this review, you will never find crappy Chinese FB page promoting this awesome café. This proves that good food sells and it attracts all sorts of diners, from Malays, to Chinese and even expats.

While prices are on the higher side as most cafes are, Nooks by Baker Dave backs it up with their quality, no MSG, and top notch service.
