Meet Mee Noodles Café is probably the coolest traditional pan mee restaurant in the Klang Valley. This charming eatery exudes a laid back ambiance through its dark plastic chairs, wooden tables and welcoming decors.  Aside from serving pan mee, Meet Mee also incorporates cakes, coffees and an array of unconventional beverages.

We started off with the signature Chili Pan Mee (RM8.20). The dish looked promising and tasted delicious. The handmade wheat noodles were perfectly cooked and the addition of fried fish cakes adds many interesting textures to the dish. Surprisingly, this dish was not overly spicy which gave room for more flavours on our palate.

If you have really low heat tolerant you may opt for the Mushroom & Pork Pan Mee (RM8.20).  It is not spicy yet bursting with rich mushroom flavours. The mushroom fillings were pretty generous as every bite we took came with at least one slice of mushroom.

Meet Mee recently introduced two interesting dishes – Lala Pan Mee (RM13.90) and Tom Yam Pan Mee (RM17.90). We were fortunate enough to sample both.

Lala Pan Mee is served with handmade noodles in ginger and wine broth, topped with generous amounts of lala. Although the broth appears light and clear, the ginger flavours were quite strong and the combination of fresh Japanese Lalas and smooth noodles managed to satisfy our heavy taste buds.

Simply put, Tom Yam Seafood Pan Mee is a MUST TRY dish when you are in Subang Jaya. The infusion of Thai and Chinese flavours was creative and absolutely fantastic. The tom yam broth compliments the handmade noodles well, the prawns, lalas and mussels was incredibly fresh. We loved that Meet Mee were generous with their seafood, the prawns in particular was quite big and satisfying.

What stood out Meet Mee from the rest is their wide selection of chilli – Indo, Sambal, Signature, Ginger and Green.

Traditional Fried Dumpling (RM6.20)

Fried Pork Wantan (RM4.80)

There is nothing much to shout about as dumplings and wantan always make great snacks in pan mee restaurants.

As mentioned above, Meet Mee also offers a plethora of café-like delicacies ranging from cakes, coffee, tea and many interesting drinks.

We had a number of these interesting drinks – Rose + Jasmine (RM12.90), Carrot (RM5.20), Lycheelicious (RM8.20) and Jasmine Green Tea (RM3.80). While all drinks were decent, the Lycheelicious in particular stood out! The lychee fruits were fresh and the drink was pretty enjoyable.

For those with a sweet tooth, you might be interested with Meet Mee’s cakes offering –  Chocolate Peanut Butter Mille Crepe (RM12) and Japanese Cheese (RM9), paired with a good cup of Latte (RM7).

Verdict

Our dining experience at Meet Mee was indeed pleasant. The food was great and the ambiance is welcoming. It’s certainly not your average pan mee restaurant as there are many café-like elements implemented. From the interesting drinks to cakes and coffee, Meet Mee has something for almost everyone.

Located in front of Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is Keong Kee Herbal Soup and Mushroom Pan Mee. This no-frills dinner place is usually packed with customers from evening onward.

Keong Kee Herbal Soup serves a handful of Chinese food and also one would call “exotic” food. Some of the exotic food items are their flying squirrel, white pigeon, and terrapin.

There are a couple of soups to choose from and we ordered the Coconut Chicken Soup (RM11), it’s essentially steamed herbal coconut chicken soup served in an actual old coconut. Does it make a difference in the taste? Many times it’s just our mind that persuades us but nonetheless the soup is delicious and flavour packed;  salty from the chicken, sweet from the coconut flesh.

It’s also worth mentioning that this dish came with large pieces of Chicken breast which was tender.

Moving onto the more “exotic” dish, pork lovers would love the Wild Boar Curry (RM7.50). It’s a bowl of wild boar pieces, complemented by the fragrance of thick curry broth, sprinkled with cilantro. The wild board was tender so it was a pleasure to enjoy. The curry was thick and has a hint of spiciness to it, it’s perfect for those with heavy flavoured taste buds.

Mushroom Pan Mee (RM5.50) from the stall beside is a must if you’re a pan mee lover. Not only the pan mee is affordable, the dish truly lives up to its name as the broth was sweet and fragrant of mushroom flavour. We liked how they were generous with the mushrooms and the noodles were silky smooth.

Open daily from 5PM onward, get in early and try their exotic dishes. Opt for the Coconut Chicken Soup if you want something out of the ordinary.

If you’re a fan of Curry Mee, then Restaurant Chef K restaurant deserves your attention. A kopitiam-like restaurant, Chef K churns out mostly porky noodle dishes with a hint of Ipoh flavours in Bandar Bukit Puchong 2, Puchong. In fact the founder of Chef K has strong family ties to the brains behind the popular “Ma Ta Liu Curry” at Xin Quan Fang, Ipoh.

It’s always a pleasure to see family run business opting not to use foreign labour instead we were served by a family member who was friendly and made us felt comfortable.

Chef K’s signature Roast Pork Belly Curry Mee is priced at RM8.50 for Regular portion and RM9.50 for Big portion. Adding cockles cost an extra RM1.50 and additional toppings of Cuttle Fish, Bean Sprouts, and Prawns are charged based on daily market price.

We had the standard Roast Pork Belly Curry Mee (RM8.50) which came with a good amount of toppings. Although the curry broth was light, the spices gave a distinctively sharp flavour that reminded us of Ipoh’s Curry Mee. The addition of Pork Belly was tender and adds so much flavour to the already delicious broth.

We loved how Chef K kept the Curry Mee recipe as authentic as possible as it tasted quite different from what we usually have in the Klang Valley. If you feel the addition of Pork Belly is gimmicky, trust us it’s not! The Pork Belly actually added so much depth and appeals to the dish.

Since Pan Mee is also a specialty at Chef K, we sampled Pan Mee Soup (RM7) too. Though not fantastic, this dish was decent enough for a try. While the noodles were smooth and soft, we personally felt the broth needs improvement in terms of flavour.

We regretted ordering this and should have gone with the Homemade Fish Meat Mee instead as it’s also Chef K’s signature.

Verdict

Overall, our dining experience at Chef K was a pleasant one. The eatery pays attention to small details and is doing a great job in bringing distinctive Ipoh flavours to the Klang Valley. We highly recommend you to try if you need a fix of Ipoh style Curry Mee. We’d be a regular at Chef K if only it wasn’t so far away.

Jojo’s Little Kitchen is usually the go-to-place for pan mee, and undeniably the most popular in the Klang Valley. But if you’re looking for an authentic alternative, check out Jing Zhu Pan Mee in SS19, Subang Jaya.

Jing Zhu used to operate in a coffee shop behind its current location but since December 2016 they have shifted and are currently operating their own restaurant. Although Jing Zhu has been around for quite some time it has virtually zero presence on the Internet.

It’s also worth mentioning that aside from Mee Hoon Kueh (Hand-Torn Noodles), Jing Zhu also offers Yee Mee.

We ordered Pan Mee Soup (RM7) which came with a generous amount of minced pork, slices of mushroom, fried crispy anchovies and plenty of sweet potato leaves. The soup base is bursting with multiple flavours from the sweet potato leaves and ikan bilis stock.

The noodles’ (mee hoon kueh) texture was incredibly smooth, soft and mostly importantly not chewy.

Verdict

Jing Zhu is a hidden gem for those who crave the taste of home-cooked noodle dishes. It does warm our hearts to see that this restaurant employs locals, the staff whom attended to us was a sincere and efficient aunty.

While the price is slightly on the higher side for an authentic eatery we we felt the portion did justify.

Do expect the kind of food you’d look for when you’re having pan mee at home, there’s no MSG we believe, so there’s no worries of having to quench your thirst after your meal.
