You’ve probably heard of Akka Nasi Lemak on social media, and for good reason. What started as a small Nasi Lemak stall in a quiet Seri Kembangan neighborhood has now expanded to serve over 500 customers, and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Where it all started

On earlier April 2023, we discovered a humble Indian lady selling nasi lemak from a social media post. We decided to film a short video introducing this place to all social media users.

Friendly Indian Lady Selling Nasi Lemak with Many Toppings at Seri Kembangan – Akka Nasi Lemak @ Seri Kembangan

Indian Nasi Lemak run by a friendly Akka in Seri Kembangan 💁🏽‍♀️😍

📍 Akka Nasi Lemak

In front Hong Leong Bank Jalan PUJ 3/2, Taman Puncak Jalil, Putra Permai, 43300 Seri Kembangan

[6AM-10AM]

Posted by Fun N’ Taste on Monday, 10 April 2023

While editing the video, we realized that the stall did not have any online presence, Google Map address, or even a name.

Hence, we decided to give it the name Akka Nasi Lemak and create a Google Map address so that people could navigate to this stall after watching our video. We called it Akka Nasi Lemak because the owner referred to all her lady customers as ‘Akka.’

The video blew up on our Facebook, TikTok, and even our neglected Instagram account. The stall was then featured on many media platforms such as Astro, THR Raaga, and countless random TikTok users.

The birth of Akka Nasi Lemak

Meet Sangeetha Manimalar, the 34-year-old mother who runs Akka Nasi Lemak. Having a hotel management background, the mother of two has been selling nasi lemak for more than 10 years. However, her stall instantly become a “viral” sensation on social media in the month of April, which falls on the Ramadan month.

Her dishes are abundance, you can find Ayam Masak Merah, Ayam Rendang, Ayam Goreng Berempah, Sambal Kerang and Sambal Sotong. No pork is used or serve in her stall. Furthermore she offers two types of sambal, spicy and normal, as well as two types of rice, namely santan rice and pandan rice.

A warrior in the culinary

Nothing great ever came that easy. According to Sangeetha’s interview in Astro Naavanil, she shared that her husband and children was met in an accident. The children have recovered but her husband is still on a recovering stage. But Sangeetha manages her life and the livelihood of her family with the little money earned.

When “Akka Nasi Lemak” started gaining popularity, it attracts all sort of walks, people around Selangor, KL and even Singapore, to line up starting at 12am just to get a taste of her food, almost equates to celebrity fans camp out for concert tickets.

With a sudden increase of customers, she has already enlisted some extra hands to help her. In particularly, her neighbour who’s a friendly Chinese aunty is helping her as well, without asking for single salary.

Unfazed by nonsense

It’s safe to assume that fame attract haters. Despite some mishaps during the stall, Akka Nasi Lemak is going strong. To ensure everyone customers who line up able to purchase her food, token will be given to everyone and every customer can buy maximum of 5 packets of nasi lemak.

Furthermore, Sangeetha’s news has caught attention of Vice-President of Angkatan Muda Keadilan Malaysia Thiban Subbramaniam to help in registry of her business.

Many homesick Malaysians are stranded overseas during this global pandemic. Aside from being separated away from their loved ones in homeland, some would miss the taste of the authentic Malaysian food.

Priyadashini Maganathan, otherwise known as Priya, migrated to Isle of Man after marriage in 2018 when she was 27-years-old. The Puchong native made a point to visit her single mother annually until last year, her plan was crushed. She hasn’t been home for two years.

One of the ways Priya cope with homesickness is to cook Malaysian food. She started cooking as a hobby after moving to Isle of Man, an island located approximately 3 hours ferry ride from Liverpool in the UK.

As a wedding present, Priya’s mother gave her a written recipe book. Apart from seeking guidance from her mother, she learned how to cook herself by watching online videos.

Realising that she has a talent for cooking, Priya also found it hard to get a job with her marketing background hence she decided to start Makan at IOM, a food delivery business specializing in Malaysian cuisine.

This Malaysian Living In Isle Of Man Sells and Delivers Nasi Lemak and Many More Malaysian Food

Priya specialises in cooking nasi lemak, chicken rice, rendang, and curry puffs which have also been a hit amongst Malaysians who are living there.

Malaysian food is not something unheard of amongst people who live in Isle of Man and the UK. “They are quite familiar actually. Even many people on the island have been to Malaysia or Singapore,” Priya shared.

In terms of flavour and spicy level, Priya also gets local customers but tweaks her recipes to reduce the level of spiciness to fit the locals’ taste buds. She tries her best to keep the authenticity of the flavours.

With the economy opening back up, Priya says that sales have been picking up

During the lockdowns in UK, Priya’s business was affected and she had to resort to home deliveries as offices were closed. However as the UK government has opened up the economy now, things are getting back to normal for Makan at IOM and Priya.

Priya feels thankful that her husband’s moral support has been of much help. Cooking wise, it wasn’t so much as the UK and Isle of Man apply standard and strict policy on food hygiene and food handling. Priya even needed to attend a mandatory one-day course and get a certificate for food hygiene.

“But for our personal meals, he definitely helps me. He even makes a good Wantan Mee,” said Priya, cheekily adding that she really enjoyed her husband’s home cooked Malaysian meal.

As a start-up coping with the pandemic, Priya and Makan at IOM rose soared to higher heights by persevering in the face of adversity and promoting flavours of Malaysia.

When people talk about nasi lemak around Pudu, they often think of two popular places – Peel Road Nasi Lemak and Ann Nasi Lemak. Both of these nasi lemak stalls came highly recommended by folks living in Kuala Lumpur and both stalls coincidentally serve pork.

Since we’ve previously reviewed Peel Road Nasi Lemak, we would like to share about Ann Nasi Lemak at ICC Pudu. It’s one of the most popular stalls around ICC Pudu as people are willing to queue up for it although there are plenty of good food around.

Among the dishes available, Porkskin Curry is their signature as many regulars rave about it. Sotong Sambal is also said to be one of the better side dish here however it wasn’t available during our visit so we had to replace it with Siham(cockles) Sambal instead. While the Porkskin Curry was unique, we personally found the Sambal Siham, Fried Chicken, and Shrimp & Minced Pork Fried Petai to taste just as good.

Our plate of nasi lemak as pictured above consisting of Curry Porkskin, Sambal Siham, Onion Sambal, boiled egg, peanuts, ikan bilis and cucumber cost a total of RM9. The nasi lemak here is not exactly cheap, but judging by the generous portions of the side dishes we would say it’s definitely worth it.

The Curry Porkskin was rich but not overly thick and full of aroma derived from coconut milk and curry spices. The consistency of the pork skin was soft and chewy, may not be suitable if you prefer a little crunch.

The santan rice was fragrant and Sambal Siham was decent and they were quite generous with the portion. The sambal was a little too mild for our liking although the owner told us it’s quite spicy. The onions in the sambal gave it a good crunch and  a hint of sweetness.

Ann Nasi Lemak’s stall can be found in ICC Pudu, if you are coming though the main entrance, just keep walking straight till you reach towards the end and you’ll see the big yellow and green signboard.

Mention Chinese Nasi Lemak, Peel Road Nasi Lemak is surely one of the places to come into mind. Not surprisingly, it operates in a Chinese coffee shop which also houses other Chinese food stalls.

Although it is marketed as nasi lemak, the ordering process is quite similar to Chinese Mix Rice (zhap fan) style. You start off with a choice between white rice or santan rice, then you choose and scoop your preferred lauk to your plate by yourself.

Once you have chosen your side dishes, give your plate to the lady boss and request for the essential ingredients which are ikan bilis, peanuts, boiled egg and cucumber.

There are over 10 side dishes to choose, ranging from fried chicken, chicken curry, chicken rendang, mutton curry, wild boar curry, sotong sambal, vegetables and more. Accordingly many customers, the wild boar curry and sotong sambal are the best among all the side dishes available.

We piled the plate with wild boar curry, fried chicken and long beans which cost RM9. For some this might feel expensive, but when you consider the generous amounts of wild boar we took and the decent sized fried chicken, we would say the price is quite reasonable. Certainly not super cheap, but still value for money.

Despite not being big fans of Chinese-style nasi lemak, taste wise we are glad to say it was quite delicious. The coconut rice was quite fragrant and although the sambal was neither spicy nor sweet, it had a rich consistency and a good flavour.

The wild boar curry was absolutely delicious too!.It was meaty and tender and had a spicy fragrant in the curry gravy.

Verdict

Overall there was simply nothing bad to say about Peel Road Nasi Lemak. It tastes much like the conventional nasi lemak but with a little porky twist. The variety of side dishes can be a little overwhelming and the prices are fair due to it being a road side stall.

There are lots of delicious nasi lemak stalls around Petaling Jaya area such as Nasi Lemak Bumbung and Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12.  Joining this list is Nasi Lemak Goreng Chef Fauzy, a household name in Petaling Jaya which had recently caught our attention due to its unique twist of this widely beloved dish.

Since 2011, Chef Fauzy has appeared on TV, magazine and newspaper write up countless times. Despite his stall’s popularity, he is still humble and friendly towards his customers. He saw us with a tripod and camera, and can’t help but to ask us our opinion in this dish. This shows how much he care about his craft. We definitely admire chef who ask for room for improvement.

Chef Fauzey sell fried nasi lemak, or more commonly known as nasi lemak goreng. Located behind a bus station at Jalan Othman, Petaling Jaya, Nasi Lemak Goreng Chef Fauzy whips up one of the most interesting  modification of nasi lemak dish. Instead of serving regular santan rice, they fried the santan rice with their homemade sambal sauce over a hot wok. It’s also worth mentioning that the sambal here is cooked for 4 hours every morning.

A standard plate of Nasi Lemak Goreng with fried chicken cost RM8 which is topped with cucumbers and soft boil egg.

The rice was soft and moist, packed with “wok hei” flavour. It was a tad bit spicy and clearly the best part of the entire dish. Having a “wok hei” flavoured sambal rice instead of regular nasi lemak rice was certainly an interesting experience.

The sambal was super spicy and flavoursome, will certainly please spicy food lovers. It should satisfy your palates if you enjoy the spicy kick of sambal. The fried chicken was double fried to ensure crispiness while maintaining the moist on the inside. Personally we felt there was nothing too special about the spicy but it’s still good enough.

If you are not adventurous enough you may opt for the regular Nasi Lemak Kukus (RM7) which was pretty good as well.

Verdict

Although the pricing is on the higher side for a food truck, Nasi Lemak Goreng Chef Fauzy is one of the better nasi lemak we have tried in Petaling Jaya.

Our colleague preferred the regular Nasi Lemak Kukus compared to the Nasi Lemak Goreng as he described the dish was “a little less heavy, and balanced out the greasiness of the rempah.” If you are conscious with what goes in your mouth, you know which one to pick.

While there’s no shortage of delicious food in Subang Jaya area, finding the right Nasi Lemak stall can be an overwhelming experience as there too many options available.

Tucked away in a less bustling side of Subang Jaya, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is located prominently outside of Sime Darby Medical Centre. According to the owner, this stall has been operating for 20 years at the same spot, which says a lot about their credibility.

One thing about this humble nasi lemak stalls that stands out is the wide array of lauk-pauk everything from beef rendang, prawn & petai sambal, beef lungs, and more are available. Aside from nasi lemak, nasi kukus is also sold here.

Much like most Nasi Lemak stalls, you will be served a standard plate of coconut rice, anchovies, egg and cucumber topped with sambal. Then you proceed with the lauk of your choice and the mak cik will add them for you. We went with 2 toppings for each nasi lemak dish.

Nasi Lemak with Daging Rendang and Paru (RM9)

Get ready to drool if you love sambal. The sambal by Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 was fiery, in a good way. Every bite mixed with the meat was bursting with flavours, and it should satisfy your palates if you’re into spicy food.

The beef rendang was wonderfully marinated, packed a savoury punch would make you feel sad at your last bite. On top of that, they nailed it with the beef lungs. If you tried beef lungs before you’d know that it’s a dish that difficult to perfect, however the beef lungs here was easy on the mouth, just the right texture.

Nasi Lemak with Petai Prawn and Squid (RM12)

One of the must-eats at the Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is their highly recommended Prawn & Petai, where prawn is cooked to perfection. Although it’s cooked with petai, the taste and smell of stink beans was not too overpowering to the sambal.

The squid was particularly big. It’s bigger than what you would usually find in a typical nasi lemak stall. The texture of the squid was surprisingly tender and it soaked up the sambal that was cooked with it well.

Nasi Kukus (RM7)

This dish looked promising and tasted even better. The acar alongside the rice was crunchy and gave the dish a distinguish flavour when eaten together with the rice. The fried chicken was nicely marinated, and fried to perfection, further complementing the dish.

Wash all the spiciness down with some Thai Ice Tea (RM6) and Thai Green Tea (RM6).

Verdict

All in all, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 is indeed a hidden gem. All dishes we ordered makes up for an incredibly satisfying lunch. While there are many nasi lemak stalls around town, Nasi Lemak Kukus SS12 particularly stands out for its wide array of toppings and delicious flavours. We can foresee ourselves coming back to this stall in the near future.

Before coming here, we’ve heard plenty of praises about Sisters Char Koay Teow in USJ 16. It’s also worth mentioning that Sister Char Koay Teow was voted as the Best Char Kuey Teow for the 2015 TimeOut KL awards.

Despite the name, Sisters Char Kuey Teow is not related to the Sisters Char Kuey Teow in Penang. The eatery was simply named after 2 sisters who opened this restaurant, and yes this restaurant is Halal Certified.

The outlet is simple, spacious and uses wooden tables and stools for customers. Our first disappointment came from the ordering process. No menu was presented and we had to order by looking at the pictures of food plastered all over the walls. The disappointing part was there were no price tags attached to these pictures hence we had to ask the waiter the prices of everything before ordering.

P/S: We forgot the price of the dishes as we lost the receipt.

We started off with a Nasi Lemak Bungkus. There was really nothing out of the ordinary for this one, the sambal was pretty fragrant and spicy but overall it’s just another regular Nasi Lemak.

Teh Panas wasn’t to our liking as the tea tasted weak and bland.

The Char Koay Teow is placed on a food wrapping paper and served on a rattan basket-like-plate. The toppings were generous enough, the prawns are at reasonable size and the portion is perfect – not too big, not too small.

Taste-wise, the noodle lacks in “wok hei” but the prawns were quite bouncy and fresh. The Char Koay Teow was slightly spicy and has a distinctive Penang taste. We won’t go as far as to say the Char Koay Teow tasted amazing by any means, but it’s quite decent especially for a halal variation.

We saw many diners ordered the Chee Cheong Fun so we decided to give it a try as well. The Chee Cheong Fun was silky smooth and the curry was quite aromatic but the chicken was hard in the mouth.

Verdict

The Char Koay Teow here isn’t bad per se but there are room for improvements. Nonetheless, it does make a good halal alternative for Muslims to sample a Chinese-style Char Koay Teow.

Restoran Warisan Sambal Opah serves one of the most popular nasi lemak in USJ, Subang Jaya. For many, it’s also known as Nasi Lemak Sambal Opah. If you look at the signboard, you will see that this restaurant claims to have history dating back to 1960.

There are a number of pre-packed nasi lemak available but the kakak is constantly packing new batches. Each packet of nasi lemak cost RM1 and since it was cheap we bought a couple. It’s also worth mentioning the staffs were very friendly and willingly to help.

Turned out, Nasi Lemak Sambal Opah was tasty and enjoyable. The sambal had a rich consistency and spicy punch while the rice was fragrant and aromatic. Sadly, toppings of boiled egg, anchovies and peanuts were quite limited.

Nasi Lemak Sambal Opah offers a wide variety of additional dishes to accompany your nasi lemak packet. Dishes ranging from beef rendeng, sambal lala, sambal quail eggs, sambal prawn, sambal squid, fried intestine, fried egg, fried chicken and more.

We opted for the Fried Chicken (RM4) and Sambal Squid (RM8) which was surprisingly quite expensive considering the size of the chicken and the amount of squid we took. Taste-wise, there’s nothing much to shout about the fried chicken but Sambal Squid was on the sweeter side which perfectly balance out the spiciness from the nasi lemak.

Verdict

Being a big supporter of tasty and affordable food, we highly recommend you to try the nasi lemak at Restoran Warisan Sambal Opah.
