Featured in The Star Online 2015, Nasi Kandar Kudu Bin Abdul is certainly a winning combination. Their signature dish which is the Nasi Kandar Ayam Sambal Bawang is less than RM10 despite located at a tourist spot. The only downside of Nasi Kandar kubu is having to wait at least 15 minutes on average due to the long queue. If you’re in a haste or rushing this would not be a suitable place for you to satisfy your hunger.

Nasi Kandar Kok Siong is the next best thing for Penangites who crave for Nasi Kandar but can’t travel 300 km up north. Their best selling dishes consist of fried chicken and mutton curry. The eccentric twist of the “kopitiam” like surrounding and the piquancy of the curry gives out an eminence of authentic Penang’s nasi kandar which helps distinguish Nasi Kandar Kok Siong from the rest.

They serve nasi ayam besar but if you’re not a big eater then the RM6 nasi ayam kecil should be of the similar satisfaction as the fried chicken comes in a large portion.

You’d think a nasi kandar restaurant that has been operating for 50 plus years would come with an affordable priced dish but to our dismay it was pretty costly. For a plate of ayam madu and okra at Mohd Yaseen you’d have to pay RM7.70 whereas for a plate of ayam kicap, okra and salted egg costs roughly about RM8.70. Otherwise, If the price point isn’t a problem for you then you’d probably take delight in knowing that the thick, vibrant curries tasted fresh and the portion was quite big.

This restaurant is known for its Nasi Dulang Daun Pisang where they served rice on a tray with banana leaf. But today we’re here for their Nasi Ganja. For only RM7.50, you’d be able to relish in their must try set nasi ganja ayam with their authentic homemade kuah. They also serve nasi ganja lamb shank if you’re a fan of lamb. All in all, this hidden gem should at least be tried once by everyone who’s fond of a more modernized nasi kandar. Lastly, it’s highly advisable to visit this restaurant before 11am to avoid long queues.

Restaurant Nasi Kandar Shaaz is located walking distance from Sunway University, tucked into the row of workshops on the back street of Bandar Sunway.

The restaurant has been operating in the Klang Valley for many years and this is the 6th branch. We were invited to sample some of the best dishes offered by Nasi Kandar Shaaz and it definitely surpassed our expectation.

Although it is their second day of operation, Nasi Kandar Shaaz pulled a huge crowd which is a positive sign of the food here.

Nasi Kandar Shaaz is self-service. To order your food you need to get in line at the food or drinks counter and let the staff know what items you fancy in your Nasi Kandar.

There were around 20 dishes ranging from fried chicken, mutton varuval, fish egg masala and fish head curry. We opted for the standard fried chicken, cabbage, and squid over white rice and “kuah campur”.

Turns out Nasi Kandar Shaaz was quite delicious. The restaurant uses quality ingredients as the squid was fresh, soft and tender and the curries were thick and flavourful. The fried chicken had a crispy texture which complimented the curries and soft rice well.

We could not walk out before trying their Briyani. The Briyani set came with a large piece of chicken and topped with boiled egg. The Briyani flavours were quite delicious and the chicken was well marinated.

The Briyani set also came with Achar, Curry and papadam which goes well with the Briyani rice.

If you fancy mutton with your Briyani, do opt for the Mutton Varuval. The gravy which thick and robust, and the mutton was unbelievably tender.

However if you fancy something exotic do opt for their Fish Egg.

Looking for a Fish Head Curry spot? We are happy to say that Nasi Kandar Shaaz also offers Fish Head Curry dish. It is one of the best Fish Head Curry dishes we’ve had in Bandar Sunway. The curry was spicy and flavourful and quite addictive. We found ourselves drinking the curry, it was that good.

Sup Kambing was a great option for those who love something soupy. The Sup Kambing packed a punch of flavour from the mutton and herbs, very aromatic while not overly spicy.

If you’re coming here for breakfast do opt for their Nasi Lemak Ayam. We loved that the chicken was perfectly fried, tasty and crispy on the outside while tender on the inside. We also loved the sambal which was quite tasty as well.

Of course, Teh Tarik is so much a part of Mamak culture. You certainly cannot leave without tasting their tea. Since it was pretty hot on that day, we opted for a glass of Teh Tarik Ice, which was strong and not overly sweet.

Accompanied by a smooth glass of their Watermelon Lychee (RM6.50), perfect thirst quencher after a hearty meal.

Verdict

Nasi Kandar Shaaz offers quality food which balances the taste and price. The curries from the Nasi Kandar dish were surprisingly delicious and a must try for Nasi Kandar lovers.

We can say this restaurant serves inarguably the best Indian Fish Head Curry and Nasi Kandar in Bandar Sunway, no doubt.

The restaurant also offers Many other dishes such as Malay Nasi Kandar, Tom Yum and other typical mamak food such as Roti Canai, Tosai and more.

This article is written in collaboration with Nasi Kandar Shaaz.

If you are planning on a food hunting in Ipoh, Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah should be on your MUST TRY list. It is not only one of the most popular eateries in Ipoh but also the only notable Nasi Kandar in town.

While the official name of the restaurant is Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah, the locals nicknamed it “Nasi Ganja” due to its addictiveness. Despite the nickname, fret not as there are no marijuana used in any of the ingredients.

Much like Nasi Kandar Penang Kok Siong in Puchong, Ipoh’s Nasi Ganja is operated in a Chinese coffee shop.

If you are planning to dine in you do not have to worry about the dreadful long queue as it is for those who are having their Nasi Kandar take away. However if you are dropping by during lunch hour, it would be impossible for you to find a table without sharing it with others.

Luckily the majority of people from Ipoh are friendly and are more than willing to share a table with you.

Once you find a place to sit, do tell the staff what you want in your plate of Nasi Kandar.  The service was surprisingly quick and efficient as it took around 5 minutes for our food to arrive despite the large crowd.

We had the signature plate of Nasi Kandar which came with fried chicken, salted egg, okra and sliced cucumbers topped with their special chutney and robust curries.

Although the fried chicken was a tad hard to our liking, overall the dish was pretty amazing. The curries were spicy and flavourful and complimented the fluffy and soft rice well. The chutney and salted egg brought unconventional flavours to the typical Nasi Kandar dish.

The curries were clearly the wow factor of this dish hence do request for “kuah campur banjir” for a satisfying feast.

Verdict

Taste wise, the uniqueness of this dish was the curry and the addition of chutney and salted egg. While the chicken breast was hard, we found the drumstick to be quite tender and flavourful. Do tell the staff which chicken part you want to avoid disappointment. The portion has slightly decreased compared to few years ago, nonetheless you can ask for extra rice which is charged affordably at only RM0.50.

Overall, Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah was an incredibly satisfying meal. It’s a good place for you to quickly satisfying your Nasi Kandar cravings and move on with your day.

While there is no shortage of Nasi Kandar restaurants in the Klang Valley (KL & Selangor) none of them stand a chance against the Nasi Kandar in Penang in terms of taste, authenticity and affordability.

Same can’t be said when it comes to Kok Siong Nasi Kandar at Puchong. Sure, it is not on the level of Tajuddin Hussain or Shariff Nasi Kandar. But considering that you can’t always drive 300km up North, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar is inarguably the next best thing.

Unlike the overpriced curry rice chains such as Kayu and Pelita, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar offers distinctive flavours which is familiar enough to merit comparisons to some nasi kandar in Penang.

The coffee shop gets really crowded during lunch hour as hundreds of patrons come to get fed. Don’t be put off by the long queue of customers at Kok Siong Nasi Kandar stall as service is pretty quick and efficient.

The best sellers here are the fried chicken and mutton curry. We opt for the basic serving consisting of fried chicken, vege, and “kuah campur” which cost RM8.00. The price is certainly not affordable as compared to Line Clear Nasi Kandar which only cost RM5.30.

Nonetheless, we had no qualms paying RM8.00 for this dish as it tasted delicious. The fried chicken smelled robust and had a crispy texture on the outside while remaining juicy and tender on the inside. The chicken was also incredibly fresh as the kakak constantly fried and refilled the fried chicken tray.

While the fried chicken was easily the best part of the dish, the thick and flavourful curries added the extra oomph. The addition of added crunchy bits from the fried chicken provided interesting textures.

Verdict

Turned out, Kok Siong Nasi Kandar was excellent. We were satisfied with the taste and we could see why people are willing to line up. While prices are on the higher side, the dish certainly does justice.

Eaten for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper, Nasi Kandar is one of the most beloved dishes all around Malaysia. What makes a good nasi kandar is the fiery curries, soft and fluffy rice and of course poultries.
