Asia attracts thousands of backpackers each year, each looking to experience the incredible people, food and culture. On a salary of less than $1500 a month, it is possible to comfortably travel this area of the world full time.

However, before you go, there are a few things to consider. Whether you are wandering the temples of Nepal or kicking back in Thailand.

Here are 6 Important Things You Should Do Before Backpacking Across Asia.

1. Research the Weather

Asia is a vast and vastly underestimated landscape. The difference between the Indian Himalayas and Thai sandy beaches can be huge, so always check the temperature before you go. Remember that countries located near to the equator may not have hot versus cold seasons like you are used to, but rather wet versus dry. Research the weather conditions and pack accordingly.

2. Pack Light

Image Credit: Photo by Stephan Vance on Unsplash

Southeast Asia comprises 11 countries clustered together. Combined with cheap transport and accommodation, staying in constant motion is an easy and exciting way to travel. However, for this, you must pack as lightly as possible. Although a relatively safe area of the world, only take valuable items which are absolutely essential in case anything is stolen.

3. Learn About the Different Cultures

Image Credit: Dominik Vanyi on Unsplash

Each region of Asia has a unique history and it is useful to understand the culture of the place you are visiting. You don’t need to be an expert, but knowing your Khmer from your Kadazan goes a long way. Be aware of the local religious culture, be it Muslim, Buddhist, or anything else. Being sensitive to this information will ensure you avoid any social faux pas. Being up to date on local laws will also help.

4. Check Visa Requirements

Unlike when traveling throughout the EU or USA, each new country you visit in Southeast Asia will have its own entry requirements. You may have the documents ready for Cambodia, but when you turn up at the Vietnamese border, do you have your passport photos ready?

5. Get Immunized

Much of Asia is covered in dense rainforest, which means there are disease-carrying insects. Some vaccinations are legally required for entry, but you may want to get a few more just to be safe. Pay your nurse a visit for the most up to date advice on what immunizations are recommended.

6. Don’t Plan or Worry Too Much

Image Credit: Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

There is so much to explore in Asia, but don’t overplan. The best adventures you will have will involve discovering new, unbeaten paths. Enjoy the freedom of going with the flow. Be sensible and wary, but just enjoy the journey.

Researching a place beforehand will help you know what to pack and how to legally enter the country, but don’t over plan. Visiting Asia is a chance to relax, unwind and explore. Follow the simple advice above and you are bound to have life-changing adventure.

RED by Sirocco is one of the latest four-star boutique hotels to open in town, located along Jalan Kamunting in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur. The nearest train station to this trendy hotel is Dang Wangi LRT station. For those who dread driving, you can choose to travel around the city with the LRT train.

It’s also noteworthy to mention that surrounding the hotel are some of KL’s most popular eateries such as Yut Kee Restaurant, Kin Kin Pan Mee and Mohd Yaseen Penang Nasi Kandar.

RED By Sirocco is under M101 Holdings new ownership and the hotel is recently awarded with the Malaysia Book of Records for “The Tallest Mural in Malaysia”.

This stunning mural was painted by Malaysia graffiti artist Kenji Chai who was born in Sabah. It took him 10 hours to paint the mural daily and completed it in 21 days.

Standing at 25 floors tall, RED By Sirocco has 143 rooms, 2 dining outlets, a massage bar, a rooftop infinity pool and a well equipped fitness centre.

Checking In

Spanning at 472 square feet, the Deluxe Room is very spacious, cosy and adequate, well equipped with necessities such as vanity table, LED flat screen TV, safe box, rain shower, and the super comfortable bed where we spent our time working on our videos and website.

Among all, the most attractive in-room complimentary benefits are the classic Chinese tea set and Cafés  Richard coffee machine, all refillable every day during your stay.

The balcony gives a fantastic view of the iconic KL tower, undoubtedly the highlight of the room.

Facilities

The rooftop infinity pool of RED by Sirocco enjoys one of the best views in Kuala Lumpur. Its location on the 25th floor offers uninterrupted views of KL tower as well as Petronas Twin Towers.  The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

The Rouge Club is a club lounge in RED by Sirocco and it is located alongside the infinity pool. Be sure to drop by here for their wide range of cocktails and alcohols.

At the lower ground floor, beside the concierge is BARkery, a bakery house where you can get freshly baked pastries as well as coffee and beverages.

For those who would like to have a rejuvenating experience, their on-site massage bar is a must visit. Named The Rub Bar, the massage bar is the perfect place to relax after a long day of touristing around KL.

The environment of The Rub Bar is calm and soothing, and you could really enjoy yourself with the massage offered here by their friendly staff.

Verdict

All in all, we enjoyed our 3 days 2 nights staycation at RED by Sirocco. The hotel is in a quiet private street, it made us feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of KL city but central enough to reach the main sights and attractions in only minutes by foot.

The hotel’s highlights are the rooftop bar and cozy massage bar—be sure to save some time to enjoy it.

Thanks to the RED by Sirroco team for arranging this stay.

If you are looking for a short makan trip in Kuala Lumpur complete with accommodation, you might want to check out Tamu Hotel & Suites. Tamu Hotel & Suites is a 4 Star Business-Class Hotel located in the heart of Kampung Baru. While it doesn’t seem like much on the outside, the view from the rooms and infinity pool was simply stunning.

It is strategically located in Kampung Baru which is relatively known to feature some of the best Malay food in Kuala Lumpur such as Nasi Lemak Wanjo, Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa, Apam Balik Nusantara and lots more.

We were pleasantly surprise by the top notch service here especially for a 4 star hotel. The staffs here were polite, welcoming and super accommodating. We stayed at Tamu Hotel and Suites for 3 days and 2 nights and needless to say, we couldn’t be more pleased with our experience.

From what we’ve gathered, a standard room starts from RM218 while a junior suite starts from RM319. We stayed in the junior suite which came with stunning views of both the Twin Towers and KL Tower.

In addition to the basic amenities such as such as an electric kettle, air conditioning, 2 LED flat screen TV, safe box, shower, cupboard, complimentary WiFi, prayer mat is also provided in every room for Muslim guests.

The only thing we were extremely unhappy about the room is the lack of internet connection. Not only it was pretty slow, the WiFi signal is unreachable in the sleeping room. We spoke to the hotel about it and they are aware of the short comings and are apparently working to fix it. Hence by the time you read this, the WiFi would be a non-issue.

The bathroom has all the basic bath products needed for your stay. This huge bathroom features a bath tub and a super strong pressured rain shower system. The water heater worked efficiently and was beyond our expectations so there is nothing to complain about.

One of the best things about Tamu Hotel is the view and the massive infinity pool. The pool is located at the 14th floor, it should impress you with Kuala Lumpur’s amazing Twin Tower and KL Tower view. The pool has a roof hence even if it rains, you can still swim without a worry. Currently, the pool is only opened from 7AM – 7PM.

Tamu Hotel is still in its infancy stage hence many restaurants isn’t opened yet. However, the coffee house at the lobby, dubbed Tamu Junction is opened 24 hours and has typical dishes like Nasi Lemak and Curry Noodles.

The food here was quite disappointing as service was super slow and taste was just so-so. We highly recommend to try out the neighbouring restaurants such as Nasi Lemak Wanjo, Durian Cendol, Suriya Thai just to name a few.

Verdict

Overall, our 3 days 2 night staycation at Tamu Hotel was enjoyable. Although their F&B area isn’t strong, the massive infinity pool and beautiful room view certainly makes this hotel desirable.  If you value comfort over price, Tamu Hotel is probably for you.

We are quite sure Tamu Hotel will continue to be among the best choices for accommodation in Kuala Lumpur for the years to come.

Mercure Kuala Lumpur Shaw Parade Hotel is a hip and trendy 4-star hotel located at Pudu, a stone throw away from the shopping belt of KL such as Berjaya Time Square and Pavilion KL. Run by its parents company AccorHotels, Mercure Hotel is the first Mercure brand in Kuala Lumpur.

According to Bookings.com, a 2D1N stay at Mecure Hotel would cost RM250 (excluding tax).

Checking In

Upon arrival at the Mercure Hotel on a Saturday afternoon, we eagerly made our way through the lobby to check-in with the staff. Check in time was at 3PM however, we were told to wait an extra hour as the room was not yet ready and the hotel was fully booked. So we waited at the lobby and there were no apologies or even courtesy drinks were given.

The Deluxe Queen room that we stayed isn’t spacious but is good enough for 2 pax. The room is also well-appointed with essentials such as an electric kettle, air conditioning, LED flat screen TV, safe box, shower, cupboard, complimentary WiFi throughout the premises, and an incredibly plush and comfortable bed.

Other highlights were the cosy day lounge sofa perched by the floor-to-ceiling windows, ideal for chilling and the decent view of Bukit Bintang area.

Our only gripe about the room was the lack of soundproofing, it was extremely irritating to hear loud conversations in the corridor and people opening and closing their room doors. Especially when it’s 12:30AM and you’re trying to get some quality sleep.

Facilities

The outdoor pool and bar on the 20th floor provide a decent view of Bukit Bintang city. The pool was much smaller than what you’d expect from a 4 star hotel. When it gets crowded it can be very uncomfortable as there’s almost no room for swimming. There is also a fitness studio which comes with cardio machines, free weights, exercise balls and mats.

Mercure Hotel’s sole restaurant, Chorak was disappointing. The quality of the food was utterly bad, even food from the mamak stall is better quality than what we had. Food items such as the fried noodle and fried rice tasted blend. There were very few choices, especially for a 4-star restaurant.

Verdict

While Mercure Hotel may not be the best hotel we’ve stayed as there were many misses, our stay is still considerably decent. Despite the bad soundproof, the room is pretty relaxing and comfortable. The hotel is waking distance to many eateries, such as a mamak store, and Chinese eateries. Convenience stores like 7-11 and 99 Speedmart are also skirt around the premise.

All in all, Mercure Hotel is an alright place to stay if you’re ONLY expecting a comfortable room and a good location. It’s an ideal accommodation if you’re after a shopping spree at the city’s Golden Triangle area.

Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur is nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur alongside the historical streets of Jalan Kamunting. Some of Kuala Lumpur’s greatest food, art galleries, shopping mall and iconic landmarks are a stone throw away from this hotel.

Hotel Stripes is YTL Hotels’ second autograph hotel. It opened on 18th February 2017 and has been wowing hotel guests ever since.

The strategic location and accessibility of this hotel makes it a good place to stay for a fuss free weekend staycation in Kuala Lumpur. Hotel Stripes is only 6 minutes walking distance away from Dang Wangi LRT station. So if you dread driving, you may opt for traveling around the city with Kuala Lumpur’s highly reliable LRT.

Although there is nothing outstanding about its exterior we are tremendously pleased with the hotel’s interior. Hotel Stripes is designed to emphasis on the local heritage while having a touch of contemporary and modern vibe as displayed by the warm lighting and stylish furniture.

Hotel Stripes has 184 guest rooms and suites, 2 dining outlets, a rooftop bar, a rooftop swimming pool and a well-equipped gym.

We stayed at the Executive Deluxe room which would cost RM281++ / night + RM45 for buffet breakfast. The room was spotless and super comfortable with the warm lighting and a decent view of the city.

The room was also spacious enough to accommodate a sofa and a work table alongside a comfortable queen size bed. Besides the basic amenities each room comes with its own coffee maker, in-room mini bar and nostalgic sweets, all refillable every day during your stay.

Guests are entitled to free WiFi throughout the entire hotel premises. The connection speed was fairly decent for basic browsing and checking emails.

The bathroom comes with all basic essential products that are needed for your stay. You can always request for any special toiletries such as a razor to the receptionist . We loved the rain shower system in the bathroom as the water pressure was strong with adjustable temperature.

The infinity pool is indeed the highlight of Hotel Stripes. You don’t have to love swimming to appreciate the pleasant poolside ambiance which is complimented with a view of the iconic KL tower and other sky scrapers in the city. The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

Man Tao Bar is the sole rooftop pool bar in Hotel Stripes and it is situated alongside the infinity pool. It is mostly popular during the evening due to the soothing view of the pool and city’s skyscrapers at night.

China Doll (RM40) and Tsing Tini (RM40).

The Gym is surprisingly small but it is modern and well-equipped. The Gym features a flat screen television and Bluetooth speakers which you can connect with your phone and play any songs of your choice. Alternatively, you can also request for a pair of earphones from the receptionist. The GYM opens 24 hours a day to all hotel guests.

We decided to have dinner at Brasserie 25 which is a sophisticated and stylish French restaurant. Besides the gorgeous interior design, we truly admire the quality of the food and excellent service at Brasserie 25. We would go so far to say that Brasserie 25 would be ranked among the top 3 best French restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. Click here to check out the full food review of Brasserie 25.

Hotel breakfast is served at The Snug (buffet restaurant) at the 2nd floor. While the selection of the spread is fairly limited the quality of the food isn’t compromised. There are 2 sections to The Snug’s buffet spread – Dine In and Grab & Go. Although the Grab & Go section is catered to those who are on the run, you’re still allowed eat food from the Grab & Go section while dining in.

Room rates start from RM247. Check-in time is at 3pm, check-out time is at 12pm.

Valet parking is available at RM10 per stay for hotel guests

Verdict

All in all, our stay at Hotel Stripes was a pleasant experience. It perfectly balances out the 4 important factors when looking for a hotel to stay: location, accessibility, value and amenities. We personally feel this hotel is suitable for families or couples coming to KL for a staycation and travellers who are looking for an affordable yet quality stay.

We can’t emphasize enough on the strategic location of Hotel Stripes. So we’ve listed some popular spots around Kuala Lumpur which are walking & driving distance away from Hotel Stripes:

  • Dang Wangi LRT Station                     0.2KM
  • Medan Tuanku Monorail Station    0.3 km
  • Capital Square                                           0.4 km
  • Parkson Maju Junction Mall              0.5 km
  • Quill City Mall                                             0.5 km
  • Jalan Masjid India                                       0.6 km
  • Menara KL Tower                                 0.6 km
  • Chow Kit Market                                   0.7 km
  • Kin Kin Pan Mee                                   0.7 km
  • Mohd Yaseen Nasi Kandar                   0.75 km
  • Petronas Twin Towers                          1.2 km
  • Berjaya Times Square                          2 km
  • TREC KL                                              2.9 km

While Hotel Stripes only recently opened its doors, we’re pretty sure that it will continue to be among the top suggestions for hotels in Kuala Lumpur in the months to come.

Located on the outskirts of Putrajaya, Le Méridien Putrajaya is one of the few 5-Star hotels in town. The hotel is strategically connected to IOI City Mall and is about 20 minutes drive from KL. Thanks to a lucky draw, we had the privilege to stay at Le Méridien Putrajaya for 4 days and 3 nights and it was a pleasurable experience to say the least.

According to Le Méridien’s official website, a signature room starts from RM340 exclude breakfast. The price is definitely on the higher side as it’s typically expected for a 5-Star Luxury Hotel. The room was equipped with basic amenities and more – 40inch LED TV, work desk and chair, mini sofa, fridge and free WiFi. We must say the WiFi connection is fairly speedy as we didn’t encounter any issues watching HD videos on YouTube.

Upon entering the room, the first thing that grabbed our attention was the spacious interior. Our single beds were massive for a single bed and comfortable – it’s one of the best parts of the room. We had our buffet breakfast at 6AM in the morning and went back to bed afterwards – that’s how comfortable the beds were.

And of course, this view. Yes, it’s not the conventional KL City skyline view, nonetheless we were at the 7th floor of Le Méridien and the empty highways do give out a peaceful vibe at night. It’s also worth mentioning that the sound-proof of Le Méridien’s rooms was pretty solid as we didn’t hear any noise from outside.

Just like the rooms in here, the bathroom was roomy and has the necessary bath products you need for your stay. For the price per night, we thought getting Malin + Goetz toiletries was a fair deal.

The bathroom features a regular water heater, rain shower system and a bathtub with an extensive window view of your room (and blinds for privacy).

Our one complaint here is the water heater’s temperature isn’t consistent as it drops from hot to slightly colder from time to time. This kinda ruins the relaxing shower experience, hence we decided to use the bathtub to avoid the “potong-steam”.

All hotel guest are given one complimentary Cappuccino/Black Coffee from Latitude 02 – a cafe/bar nearby the lobbyLe Méridien Putrajaya, courtesy of Le Méridien.

One of the best parts of a 5-Star Luxury Hotel is the pool area. Le Méridien’s pool is located at the 3rd floor of the hotel and it does provide a decent view. There aren’t any lifeguards on duty hence do exercise caution in the pool area.

The gym at Le Méridien’s was well-equipped as it was furnished with every important gym items such as dumbbells and roller in a gym.

Now, on to the best part of any 5-Star luxury hotel, the buffet breakfast. We had our breakfast at Latest Recipe which offers International Buffet Breakfast. The buffet spread features cuisines of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Western.

Latest Recipe’s breakfast starts from 6AM – 10AM, we woke up around 5.30AM to make sure we avoid the breakfast crowd.

The buffet is generic, the food are exactly what you expect from a 5-Star hotel – decent spread, various cuisines, and acceptable taste. We personally wished there were more variety of sushi and more dishes in the western section. We didn’t care for the Indian section as the Roti Canai, Tosai and Capati weren’t made fresh.

Still, we highly recommend you try the Latest Recipe’s buffet breakfast, at least for a day as it’s one of the best parts during our stay.

All in all, our 4 days and 3 nights stay at Le Méridien was enjoyable. Indeed there are few things we feel Le Méridien could do better but let’s be honest, there’s no such thing as the perfect hotel.

We personally feel Le Méridien is more suitable for business trips or family who perfects a high quality and comfortable stay.

Pros: Spacious Room, Good View, Strong WiFi, Friendly Staff, Good Location (connected to IOI City Mall),

Cons: Check-in Time at 3PM, Repetitive Buffet Breakfast Spread, Confusing Lifts (not sure whether its going up or down)
