Royale Vietnam is a modern Vietnamese restaurant that specialises in fine Vietnam cuisine. The restaurant stands out with its posh interior decor and furnishings, perfect for those who fancy a lavish dining experience. However food wise, our visit was a little disappointing to say the least.

We started off with the appetizer Fresh Spring Rolls with Prawn (RM18). The size of the spring roll was exceptionally big, loaded with herbs and pieces of prawns. Not exaggerating but we had to open our mouth as big as if we were eating a  Subway sandwich.

Stewed Spare Pork Ribs (RM36) came with a food-carving in the form of a carrot bird. We felt that they emphasized too much on the presentation rather than the taste. The pork ribs by itself was below average, it was dry and not tender.

Luckily the Authentic ABC Soup With Pork (RM25) was pretty good. The soup was delicious and packed with savory flavours. We enjoyed the sweetness from the shallots, potatoes, and carrots, as well as the savouriness from the pork spare ribs.

For seafood lovers, the Steamed Tiger Prawn with Coconut (RM52) was suggested by the staff. The serving method was rather impressive to the eyes, but looks can also be deceiving. While the prawns were reasonably sized and certainly fresh, the overall dish lacks in flavours. We felt that this dish was cooked in a hurry as the soup tasted flat and bland.

Lastly, the quintessential dish in almost all Vietnamese restaurants, the House Special Pho Bo (RM38) was generously loaded with beef slices, noodles, bouncy beef balls and accompanied with bean sprouts, herbs and lime wedges. The beef slices were quite soft and tender and the broth was quite good. Upon first sip, you can taste the intense flavours of the beef bones which had been boiled with for hours. It was flavourful and soothing at the same time.

No Vietnamese meal would be complete though without a Hot Vietnamese Coffee (RM7.90). We presumed most Vietnamese restaurants would get this classic drink right but this one was bad and cardboard-ish. The coffee powder/beans felt like as if it has been hiding in the back of your cupboard for months. Needless to say, we regretted ordering the coffee.

Verdict

While the restaurant looks beautiful, Royale Vietnam has lots to improve on as most dishes we had were disappointing. This restaurant was the one and only let down during our media trip to Genting’s 24 hour Food Trail Experience. It’s quite ashame especially considering Royale Vietnam seemed quite promising.

Takoyaki is a savory snack originated from Japan. In Malaysia, they can be found in grocery store like Aeon and night markets. But if you are looking for a solid takoyaki joint, Gindaco is your best bet. Gindako is a famous takoyaki stand originated from Japan. The brand came to Malaysia in 2015 and their business has since boomed through word-of-mouth publicity.

As of today, there are 9 Gindaco outlets in Malaysia, at shopping malls in the Klang Valley such as 1Utama, Pavillion, and Publika, as well as in Penang at Avenue K and Gurney Plaza. We have previously tried Gindaco in Aeon Shah Alam, but this review is precisely for Gindaco SkyAvenue’s outlet.

The SkyAvenue’s outlet comes with a dining area where you dine in but there are only a few tables and chairs are available. Bear in mind that SkyAvenue is a tourist attraction, hence there is always a crowd in the outlet. Gindcaco has a great selection of flavours and sizes, depending on how hungry you are.

We ordered the Ebi Mayo Takoyaki (6 pieces @ RM17.90 / 8 pieces @ RM20.90) which was topped with shrimp and mayonnaise. Despite the higher price, not to mention every thing are slightly pricier in SkyAvenue Genting, we are not denying with the fact that the takoyaki was delicious.

The unassuming looking takoyaki was firm but soft to bite, and it melted it your mouth. There were big chunks of octopus inside each takoyaki. The snack was actually quite filling and we shared one order amongst two people.

Verdict

Out of all the different takoyaki stalls we’ve tasted in our entire life, Gindaco stood out from all. The only drawback of Gindaco is the price. It cost RM17.90 for 6 takoyakis, therefore it is not something we consider as cheap. Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable snack to munch on in this cold weather at Genting.

Tian Ma Bird Nest is probably the only shop in Genting SkyAvenue that specialise in bird nest. Originates from Kedah, their outlet in SkyAvenue is actually their first branch outside of their home base. During our recent media trip to Genting’s 24 hour Food Trail Experience, we managed to try out Tian Ma for the first time and we sampled 2 different bird nest dishes.

The first one was Coconut with Bird Nest (RM58), which will only be available from June onward.

The coconut was very refreshing and smooth on the palate. The sweetness was just right and the soup was soothing as well. If we have to nit pick, the portion was slightly small for its price. But bird nest was never a cheap dish to begin with.

The second dish we tried was Bird Nest Chicken Porridge (RM38). It is basically a chicken porridge, topped with chicken floss, spring onion, and bird nest.

The dish took us by surprise because we did not expect it to be this good. After all, most of the time we wouldn’t associate a sweet treat to be paired with savoury dish.

The whole dish was yummy. The addition of bird nest gave the dish an interesting texture; soft from the porridge and springy from the bird nest. Having the chicken porridge in this breezy weather in Resort World Genting, this was a perfect treat for Genting’s breezy weather.

Verdict

Tian Ma’s bird nest was not only visually appetizing but delectable as well. Certainly one of the restaurants that is worth splurging on.

We read online that it is best to eat bird’s nest on an empty stomach or before meals to allow the body to fully absorb its nutrients. So remember that before you go to Tian Ma.

Malaysian Food Street has to be one of the most stylish Malaysian-themed foodcourt in town. It is catered to tourist who would like to get a good perspective of Malaysian cuisine but do not have the time to travel all 13 states in Malaysia.

The interior pays homage to time-honoured Malaysian flavours which can be found in the alleys of downtown Kuala Lumpur. Aside from being spacious, Malaysian Food Street is a fresh and fun place to dine.

There are 20 individual stalls available and we’ve tried 7 of them.

Prawn Mee (RM20) was made out of fragrant prawn stock and topped with fresh prawns, chicken slices, hard-boiled egg, beansprouts and kangkung. As you probably could tell by the picture, the soup was thick, aromatic and tasty. The piping hot bowl was the perfect foil to Genting’s cold weather.

The Char Kuey Teow (RM21) was a tad bit oily to our liking. However it had good “wok hei”, toppings were generous and flavours were on the strong side. The Char Kuey Teow was also genuinely spicy – if you have low heat tolerant you might want to skip this.

Brickfields’ Sri Paandi restaurant is also available in Malaysian food street. With a recipe perfected since 1977 this eatery offers a wide array of south Indian delights. Thosai Paper Set (RM14) paired with a series of curries is a must try if you fancy Indian breakfast.

Both soup and dry version of Bak Kut Teh are offered here. Pork ribs in the Bak Kut Teh soup (RM32) was cooked to just the right tenderness. While the dry Bak Kut Teh (RM32) was flavourful, the spiciness level was a little too overpowering. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable dish when paired with white fluffy rice.

Wantan Mee (RM20) noodles were excellent, however the pork topped on the noodles were not up to par. For the price it was quite disappointing to say the least as we were expecting more than just some random pork sliced.

The sambal from Nasi Lemak (RM28) was the sweet type and might not satisfy spicy food lovers. Although the Nasi Lemak was quite good overall, there are still few areas of improvement – amount of squid and the chicken was a little too small.

Verdict

Despite the few knit picks, Malaysian Food Street is actually one of the better food courts we’ve dine at. Although this food court is most catered to tourist in Genting Highlands, still we can picture locals (with too much money) dining here. If you are looking for some delicious authentic Malaysian food in Genting Highlands and wouldn’t mind paying the hefty price, Malaysian Food Street would be the best alternative.
