Just Seafood at Sunway Giza, Kota Damansara recently launched black pepper durian sauce for their seafood Cajun set. Last week, we got the chance to sample this new offering and man it was freaking delicious.

For those who have yet to try this popular Cajun style seafood dining before (like us), basically your table will be placed a huge piece of food grade paper. The staff will then pour a huge pile of seafood directly on the paper.

In Just Seafood, plates, forks, and knifes will be given, but you can opt to dig in with your bare hands. Disposable gloves are provided if you dislike the smell linger on your finger. We were told by the owner, Mr Terence, that the durian sauce is cooked in the wok along with the seafood to ensure the goodness of the sauce is infused well, and not just mixing it in a plastic bag.

Price
• RM155++ for 2 Pax
• RM215++ for 4 Pax
• RM415++ for 8 Pax

*prices are subjected to 10% service charge and 6% gst.

The Black Pepper Durian set we had was for 4 pax and it comes with 2pcs of meaty crabs, 12 pcs of large prawns, 500g of mussels and bunch of vegetables like carrots, corns, potatoes, red onions, and celery. You can choose to add on more seafood such as lobster, giant fresh water prawn, XXXL crab, just to mention a few.

As the seafood was being tossed on the table a strong durian aroma hits our senses which immediately increased our appetites.

Although the combination of black pepper and durian sounded weird, the spice flavour of black pepper did not overpower the creamy and sweet flavour of the durian, making this mash-up actually taste delicious.

We were told that a combination of D24 and Kampung Durian was used to make the sauce which complement sweetness of the seafood. Besides that, a reasonable amount of cheese was added to thicken the gravy which explains the savoury flavours in the sauce.

The seafood was meaty and plump, especially the crabs. It was easy to peel and the succulent flesh literally slides off the shell. There were lots of mussels and a good amount of prawns presented in this seafood set.

Taste-wise we must say this mash-up simply worked. The durian sauce was so good we scrape clean it with our seafood and soaked it up with deep fried mantao.

The seafood was incredibly fresh and reasonably sized. This is a perfect example where gimmicky food is executed well with the right ingredients.

Lemongrass Pandan Cooler (RM7.90) was the perfect foil to the heat-ness of the seafood and durian sauce, a great thirst quencher after a big feast.

If you have a sweet tooth, then you need to try the Coconut Ice Cream (RM10). Not only it was nicely presented, the ice cream was sweet and had a smooth texture. It is almost a tradition to have coconut after a good durian feast so why not make it a coconut ice cream.

It is that time of the year when everyone goes crazy for durian. And while there are no shortage of durian stalls in the Klang Valley, it can be quite tough to get a great tasting durian at an affordable price.

If you are seeking for some quality durian with decent pricing you should consider Sinnaco Durian Specialist at Seksyen 19 Petaling Jaya. To our understanding, Sinnaco Durian Specialist doesn’t sell durian kampung as they feel the quality is not up to par.

Hence their cheapest durians are the standard type D from RM18/kg to RM22/kg. High end durians such as Musang King are also available and prices of all durians changes by a daily basis. You may keep up with their daily prices by checking their Facebook Page.

After checking out a bunch of durians, we decided to opt for the “Grade A” D101 Durian at RM22/kg

The durian certainly looked amazing. The fruits had bright yellow colours and was super fleshy. Taste-wise, we have to say it exceeded our initial expectations. It was nicely ripe, very sweet and creamy too, like a custard. It was most probably one of the best durian we’ve had in Petaling Jaya. It wasn’t on Musang King’s level but still better than most durian kampung.

The durian we had was way better than most random roadside durian vendors in terms of price, taste and quality. The shop itself was well maintained, clean and air-conditioned. You are served and may refill water at the water dispenser area. So you can enjoy durians comfortably indoors and not get choked.

Verdict

If you have been cheated by shady vendors in the past and looking for a reliable durian place, do consider buying your durian at Sinnaco Durian Specialist. We were pleasantly surprised by their sincerity and honesty. More importantly, the durian we had here was in high quality and taste pretty damn good.

Nothing gets better than a bowl of cendol to beat the hot weather in Malaysia. This popular dessert can be commonly found almost everywhere, from roadside stalls to restaurants. Just like any popular classic Malaysian dishes, every so often people come up with a creative twist to it.

Durian cendol is one of the best result of a dessert with a creative twist. While we are not sure when or where this trend first started, we decided to try it out at one of the most reputable durian cendol stalls in Kuala Lumpur.

Durian Runtuh is located at Lorong Raja Bot, Chow Kit which is a stone’s throw away from Tamu Hotel & Suite. Walking pass near this alley you will notice many durian stalls and even another durian cendol stall. However Durian Runtuh is the only stall that had a long queue and crowded with customers which is a good sign.

Much like any cendol stall,  Durian Runtuh is self-service. You stand in line, place your order, and pay at the counter.

Durian Cendol (RM13)

For RM13, you will get a huge bowl of cendol with 6 durian fruits. We were served durian kampung, the most common durians in the market which planted in a village. Although not as fleshier as Musang King or D24, the durian was quite flavoursome.  It had a slight bitter flavour to it but was quite sweet as well.

Taste wise, the durian cendol’s ingredients were quite decent. The Gula Melaka used was authentic and sweet.

The infusion of durian certainly worked here, and while the star of the dish was certainly the durian fruits we found the coconut milk to be super tasty as well. Not too sure if our senses were flooded with the durian fruits, the coconut milk was creamy and the aroma  was so strong even the coconut milk tasted like durian infused.

Verdict

Durian Runtuh is certainly the place to go to if you are looking to try durian cendol for the first time. The portion size was certainly generous as the cendol was pretty big and there were 6 durian fruits, not bad for RM13.

Parking is an issue especially during after office hours, so be prepared to walk. For us, the durian cendol here is certainly worth the hassles. Needless to say, we will be dropping by Durian Runtuh pretty soon. Oh did we mention that this stall has a decent view of the Petronas Twin Tower?
