RED by Sirocco is one of the latest four-star boutique hotels to open in town, located along Jalan Kamunting in the Chow Kit area of Kuala Lumpur. The nearest train station to this trendy hotel is Dang Wangi LRT station. For those who dread driving, you can choose to travel around the city with the LRT train.

It’s also noteworthy to mention that surrounding the hotel are some of KL’s most popular eateries such as Yut Kee Restaurant, Kin Kin Pan Mee and Mohd Yaseen Penang Nasi Kandar.

RED By Sirocco is under M101 Holdings new ownership and the hotel is recently awarded with the Malaysia Book of Records for “The Tallest Mural in Malaysia”.

This stunning mural was painted by Malaysia graffiti artist Kenji Chai who was born in Sabah. It took him 10 hours to paint the mural daily and completed it in 21 days.

Standing at 25 floors tall, RED By Sirocco has 143 rooms, 2 dining outlets, a massage bar, a rooftop infinity pool and a well equipped fitness centre.

Checking In

Spanning at 472 square feet, the Deluxe Room is very spacious, cosy and adequate, well equipped with necessities such as vanity table, LED flat screen TV, safe box, rain shower, and the super comfortable bed where we spent our time working on our videos and website.

Among all, the most attractive in-room complimentary benefits are the classic Chinese tea set and Cafés  Richard coffee machine, all refillable every day during your stay.

The balcony gives a fantastic view of the iconic KL tower, undoubtedly the highlight of the room.

Facilities

The rooftop infinity pool of RED by Sirocco enjoys one of the best views in Kuala Lumpur. Its location on the 25th floor offers uninterrupted views of KL tower as well as Petronas Twin Towers.  The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

The Rouge Club is a club lounge in RED by Sirocco and it is located alongside the infinity pool. Be sure to drop by here for their wide range of cocktails and alcohols.

At the lower ground floor, beside the concierge is BARkery, a bakery house where you can get freshly baked pastries as well as coffee and beverages.

For those who would like to have a rejuvenating experience, their on-site massage bar is a must visit. Named The Rub Bar, the massage bar is the perfect place to relax after a long day of touristing around KL.

The environment of The Rub Bar is calm and soothing, and you could really enjoy yourself with the massage offered here by their friendly staff.

Verdict

All in all, we enjoyed our 3 days 2 nights staycation at RED by Sirocco. The hotel is in a quiet private street, it made us feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of KL city but central enough to reach the main sights and attractions in only minutes by foot.

The hotel’s highlights are the rooftop bar and cozy massage bar—be sure to save some time to enjoy it.

Thanks to the RED by Sirroco team for arranging this stay.

If you ask anyone to tell you where is the best cheese naan spot in Kuala Lumpur, chances are they will name RSMY(Restoran Selera MY). With a tagline of “best cheese naan”,  we had high expectation before dining in RSMY.

Aside from serving cheese naan, RSMY is also known for their nasi beriyani, which they proudly displayed on their signage.

Ordering system here is pencil and paper sort of affair, and we jotted down our options without too much trouble. We went with the Extra Cheese Naan (RM8.00) as well as a mandatory tandoori chicken.

The Extra Cheese Naan was fluffy and filled with generous amounts of cheese which was thick and ooey.  Sadly, taste wise was a bit of a let down.

We felt the cheese slightly lacked flavour, not as savoury as how we thought it should be. The Dhall (RM2) on the side was thick and rick which amp up the flavours. However we felt it’s a little cut throat to charge an extra RM2 for a gravy which usually comes in a standard naan set. Nonetheless it did helped in enhancing the cheese naan.

The Tandoori Chicken Breast (RM10) looked slightly different compared to what is usually served in regular mamaks. The colour was lighter and less red, which we assumed was a good thing because lesser MSG and colouring. Even the taste was different to compare to mamak’s tandoori chicken. It was juicier, slightly moist, and had a decent smoky tandoor oven flavour.

Verdict

Sad to say, but the cheese naan is not the best we’ve tasted. We felt the cheese lacked in flavours, the entire dish just wasn’t all that good to us.

On the brighter note, for the price you are paying the Extra Cheese Naan certainly comes with a lot of cheese. Also we loved was the thickness and taste of the dhall, which was served hot. The next time we would probably just opt for a regular naan or roti canai and pair it with the dhall.

Nothing gets better than a bowl of cendol to beat the hot weather in Malaysia. This popular dessert can be commonly found almost everywhere, from roadside stalls to restaurants. Just like any popular classic Malaysian dishes, every so often people come up with a creative twist to it.

Durian cendol is one of the best result of a dessert with a creative twist. While we are not sure when or where this trend first started, we decided to try it out at one of the most reputable durian cendol stalls in Kuala Lumpur.

Durian Runtuh is located at Lorong Raja Bot, Chow Kit which is a stone’s throw away from Tamu Hotel & Suite. Walking pass near this alley you will notice many durian stalls and even another durian cendol stall. However Durian Runtuh is the only stall that had a long queue and crowded with customers which is a good sign.

Much like any cendol stall,  Durian Runtuh is self-service. You stand in line, place your order, and pay at the counter.

Durian Cendol (RM13)

For RM13, you will get a huge bowl of cendol with 6 durian fruits. We were served durian kampung, the most common durians in the market which planted in a village. Although not as fleshier as Musang King or D24, the durian was quite flavoursome.  It had a slight bitter flavour to it but was quite sweet as well.

Taste wise, the durian cendol’s ingredients were quite decent. The Gula Melaka used was authentic and sweet.

The infusion of durian certainly worked here, and while the star of the dish was certainly the durian fruits we found the coconut milk to be super tasty as well. Not too sure if our senses were flooded with the durian fruits, the coconut milk was creamy and the aroma  was so strong even the coconut milk tasted like durian infused.

Verdict

Durian Runtuh is certainly the place to go to if you are looking to try durian cendol for the first time. The portion size was certainly generous as the cendol was pretty big and there were 6 durian fruits, not bad for RM13.

Parking is an issue especially during after office hours, so be prepared to walk. For us, the durian cendol here is certainly worth the hassles. Needless to say, we will be dropping by Durian Runtuh pretty soon. Oh did we mention that this stall has a decent view of the Petronas Twin Tower?

Our preferred way is to use the LRT as it is more faster and efficient. However if it is not during rush hour the Monorail can be pretty fast too.

A day rate starts at about RM288/night which is super worth it considering the amount of facilities you get to enjoy. Click here to read the full review of Hotel Stripes.

During our stay at Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur, we were on the hunt for a place to eat around Chow Kit area. After some Google search we found a highly rated place for Nasi Kandar called Mohd Yaseen Penang Nasi Kandar at Chow Kit, KL.

At glance, Mohd Yaseen seems to be just another mamak restaurant that claim to serve authentic Penang Nasi Kandar. Much to our surprise, the restaurant has been operating for almost 50 years and has gained a cult following among KLites.

Upon entering it was clear that Mohd Yaseen does indeed look like an authentic Nasi Kandar restaurant just like the ones you’d find in Penang. It was past dinner time yet there was a long queue of customers waiting which is normally a good sign.

For some reason the restaurant’s signage and menu displays “Mohd Yaseem Nasi Kandar” instead of their original name. We tried asking the staffs but couldn’t get a direct answer, so lets just refer to them as Mohd Yaseen Nasi Kandar.

While the restaurant offers a wide variety of Nasi Kandar dishes, not every dish is available at all times. We wanted cabbage with our Nasi Kandar but they were all out and we had to wait roughly 15 minutes for a new batch. Two of the better poultries here are Ayam Madu and Ayam Kicap, so naturally we went with both and opted for okra as we were not going to wait for the cabbage.

Ayam Kicap, Okra and Salted Egg @ RM8.70

Ayam Madu and Okra @ RM7.70

We were slightly disappointed by the price as it was quite expensive for a Nasi Kandar joint. Nonetheless portion size was big enough and the curries, chicken and veggies tasted fresh. The rice was soft and fluffy which complimented curries which were thick, colourful and incredibly spicy. If you have low heat tolerance you might need to opt for lesser curries. The Ayam Kicap and Ayam Madu certainly stood out as it was nothing like what we’ve tasted before, at least in the Klang Valley.

Service wise, the waiters were prompt, quick and efficient. When the restaurant is not crowded the waiters are also surprisingly friendly.

Taste-wise, Mohd Yaseen Penang Nasi Kandar was a disappointment and nothing memorable. Though unique, the Ayam Madu was coated with lots of cancerous red colouring and the curries were spicy without in dept flavours. That’s not to say the food is bad, it’s quite passable as a good Nasi Kandar spot in KL and certainly better than most generic restaurants, but its no where near to what’s served in Penang.

Hotel Stripes Kuala Lumpur is nestled in the heart of Kuala Lumpur alongside the historical streets of Jalan Kamunting. Some of Kuala Lumpur’s greatest food, art galleries, shopping mall and iconic landmarks are a stone throw away from this hotel.

Hotel Stripes is YTL Hotels’ second autograph hotel. It opened on 18th February 2017 and has been wowing hotel guests ever since.

The strategic location and accessibility of this hotel makes it a good place to stay for a fuss free weekend staycation in Kuala Lumpur. Hotel Stripes is only 6 minutes walking distance away from Dang Wangi LRT station. So if you dread driving, you may opt for traveling around the city with Kuala Lumpur’s highly reliable LRT.

Although there is nothing outstanding about its exterior we are tremendously pleased with the hotel’s interior. Hotel Stripes is designed to emphasis on the local heritage while having a touch of contemporary and modern vibe as displayed by the warm lighting and stylish furniture.

Hotel Stripes has 184 guest rooms and suites, 2 dining outlets, a rooftop bar, a rooftop swimming pool and a well-equipped gym.

We stayed at the Executive Deluxe room which would cost RM281++ / night + RM45 for buffet breakfast. The room was spotless and super comfortable with the warm lighting and a decent view of the city.

The room was also spacious enough to accommodate a sofa and a work table alongside a comfortable queen size bed. Besides the basic amenities each room comes with its own coffee maker, in-room mini bar and nostalgic sweets, all refillable every day during your stay.

Guests are entitled to free WiFi throughout the entire hotel premises. The connection speed was fairly decent for basic browsing and checking emails.

The bathroom comes with all basic essential products that are needed for your stay. You can always request for any special toiletries such as a razor to the receptionist . We loved the rain shower system in the bathroom as the water pressure was strong with adjustable temperature.

The infinity pool is indeed the highlight of Hotel Stripes. You don’t have to love swimming to appreciate the pleasant poolside ambiance which is complimented with a view of the iconic KL tower and other sky scrapers in the city. The pool is only open from 7AM to 7PM.

Man Tao Bar is the sole rooftop pool bar in Hotel Stripes and it is situated alongside the infinity pool. It is mostly popular during the evening due to the soothing view of the pool and city’s skyscrapers at night.

China Doll (RM40) and Tsing Tini (RM40).

The Gym is surprisingly small but it is modern and well-equipped. The Gym features a flat screen television and Bluetooth speakers which you can connect with your phone and play any songs of your choice. Alternatively, you can also request for a pair of earphones from the receptionist. The GYM opens 24 hours a day to all hotel guests.

We decided to have dinner at Brasserie 25 which is a sophisticated and stylish French restaurant. Besides the gorgeous interior design, we truly admire the quality of the food and excellent service at Brasserie 25. We would go so far to say that Brasserie 25 would be ranked among the top 3 best French restaurants in Kuala Lumpur. Click here to check out the full food review of Brasserie 25.

Hotel breakfast is served at The Snug (buffet restaurant) at the 2nd floor. While the selection of the spread is fairly limited the quality of the food isn’t compromised. There are 2 sections to The Snug’s buffet spread – Dine In and Grab & Go. Although the Grab & Go section is catered to those who are on the run, you’re still allowed eat food from the Grab & Go section while dining in.

Room rates start from RM247. Check-in time is at 3pm, check-out time is at 12pm.

Valet parking is available at RM10 per stay for hotel guests

We personally feel this hotel is suitable for families or couples coming to KL for a staycation and travellers who are looking for an affordable yet quality stay.

Restoran Kin Kin is no stranger to the local food scene. The restaurant is famed for being the inventor of Chilli Pan Mee in 1985, which was more than 20 years ago. Needless to say, there’s no better place to try this dish at the original Kin Kin Chili Pan Mee restaurant in Chow Kit.

At the first glance, there were many locals dining in the restaurant. If you happen to sit at the non-air conditioned area, you can watch how your Pan Mee is cooked through the glassed-in kitchen by the foreign workers. After all, the waiting time was painfully long and we had nothing to do beside watching how the noodle was cooked.

Priced at RM8, Kin Kin Chilli Pan Mee is served with wheat noodles, spring onions, fried ikan bilis and garlic, and a soft boiled egg, accompanied with a small bowl of sayur manis soup. To complete the whole dish, scoop out some chilli in the plastic container on the table and mix it with your pan mee.

The noodle has a nice al dente bite. Wonderfully blended with the aroma of fragrant fried dried chili and minced pork, it almost tasted like carbonara pasta, creamy and spicy, minus the cheese part. The ikan bilis add crunch to the whole bite. Beneath the “hotness” it was a satisfying noodle dish.

Lastly, wash it down the sayur manis soup to soothe the fieriness. Kin Kin also serve a small range of drinks, but we were just going with their Ice Water, which expensively priced at RM1.

Verdict

When in Chow Kit especially, the birthplace of Chilli Pan Mee, there are a number of restaurants to try it at. In fact there are two Pan Mee stores which are located right just across the road. Still, Kin Kin has the most amount of customers.

While a colleague of ours prefer Jojo’s, as he described Kin Kin’s is “too gooey, the noodle is too glutinous”. Nonetheless the writer herself enjoy the Chilli Pan Mee.

All in all, Kin Kin is one of the restaurants in town that just do one dish and they do it well. In terms of hygiene you’d probably have to close 1 eye.

For those who don’t drive, the most convenient way to get to Kin Kin is by KL Monorail. The restaurant is about 3 minutes walk from Medan Tuanku monorail station. More importantly, come here earlier so that you don’t have to endure the long waits.
