Before coming here, we’ve heard nothing but positive reviews about the popular Chuan Lee Char Kuey Teow in Section 11 Petaling Jaya. Despite our high expectations, we are happy to say the Char Kuey Teow was indeed unbelievably delicious.

The uncle who mans the wok is infamous for being extremely grumpy and short temper, especially during peak hours. You are not allowed to make orders to him, if you do so be prepared to be shouted at. His helper (assuming his brother) is the one who handles the orders, money and servings.

Apparently, you are also not allowed to ask for extra toppings (expect for eggs) or customize the spiciness level of your Char Kuey Teow. However we saw a couple of customers requested for customize toppings and spiciness level which the helper obliges to.

A small serving Char Kuey Teow cost RM6 while the large one is RM7. The large Char Kuey Teow here is fairly big and can be quite filling even if you are a big eater.

The Kuey Teow noodles were moist and loose with an amazing “wok hei” flavours which you can smell and taste. The grumpy uncle was indeed skilful in controlling the heat and wok which made the noodles charred but not burnt surface with a strong smoky aroma.

Although the prawns used were farmed cultured prawns which aren’t up to par, the Char Kuey Teow here is still absolutely delicious and deep in flavours.

Overall, we were satisfied with the taste and we could see why Chuan Lee Char Kuey Teow has the reputation of serving the best Char Kuey Teow in Petaling Jaya. For those who prefer taste over service, we highly recommend you to put this on your list. You won’t regret it.

James Bond Fried Kuey Teow is a popular Char Koay Teow stall in Petaling Jaya mainly due to its unique name. The stall is located in a corner coffee shop called Station 8 in SS2, and it is perhaps the most attention grabbing stall among all with a yellow colour banner with the iconic James Bond logo.

The uncle behind the stall “Mr Bond” has been cooking Char Koay Teow for more than 30 years. His real name is Peter Tan but most people just call him Mr.James, or Mr.Tan. Sometimes his worker will do the cooking when “Mr Bond” is out to source fresh ingredients himself, which often results in a nice plate of Char Kuey Teow with fresh ingredients.

A plate of Char Kuey Teow (B) here cost RM7 and it comes with usual egg, fresh cockles, fish cakes and 4 large prawns which is something you don’t usually see in regular Char Koay Teow dishes. FYI, request for additional toppings of prawns, cockles, bean sprout will be denied. Also, we weren’t too sure if it was being done deliberate, but there were no Chinese sausage in James Bond Char Koay Teow.

Unfortunately we were there too early and the cockles aren’t fully defrosted yet hence our CKT didn’t come with it.

While nowhere on the level of Penang, the CKT here still tasted pretty delicious. The dish was packed with strong flavours and it was one of the most satisfying plate of CKT we’ve had in a long time. It’s worth mentioning Uncle James adds a “top secret” homemade chilli sauce while cooking his CKT which gives a spicy kick.

Although the dish was quite aromatic and moderately delicious, it’s still not the best as the CKT here lacks of wok hei. However the main attraction of James Bond CKT is certainly the name of the stall and the generous amounts of toppings. Portion size was quite satisfying as we felt full after finishing our plate.

This stall serves one of the most popular and arguably the best Char Kuey Teow dish in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. To many, it is known as Brickfields Char Kuey Teow. The place can get crowded during lunch hour and many office workers come to get fed.

It took less than 5 minutes for our Char Kuey Teow to arrive as we were there during non peak hours. We did not request for the egg to be cooked separated, the CKT master expertly and deliberately cooked it that way in the same wok.

Char Kuey Teow (Big RM7, Small RM6)

Truth be told, the price is quite steep for a road side CKT and if you opt for the small CKT, portion wouldn’t be satisfying. That being said, Brick Fields Char Kuey Teow is still better than most CKT in Kuala Lumpur.

It had a delightful smoky aroma, the noodles were soft, slightly moist and accompanied by the usual CKT ingredients such as decent sized prawns and lots of Chinese sausages to balance the sweet and savoury flavours.

The Char Kuey Teow was no doubt delicious, there wasn’t any oversized prawn or salted egg, just a delicious plate of char kuey teow with strong “wok hei” flavours.

Verdict

Despite the steep price Brickfields Char Kuey Teow is definitely work the price. After all, this is as affordable as it gets when you are in a major city. There are also other stalls around this area that sells Mee Goreng, Cendol, Durian and more. The Mee Goreng in particular is said to be pretty delicious.
