Ramadan is just around the corner and if you are already planning your buka puasa sessions and Raya get-togethers, here’s something worth checking out. Maria’s SteakCafe is bringing back their Special Ramadan & Raya Menu and it will be available from 19 February to 19 April 2026 at all Klang Valley outlets.

Instead of a buffet spread, Maria’s is going for something more intimate and communal this year, a multi-tiered set designed for sharing. Think of it as a festive feast stacked with abundance, perfect for family gatherings, close friends, and even corporate iftar dinners.

Every set starts with dates and a festive drink called Rosé Zest. Light, refreshing and slightly citrusy, it is exactly what you need after a long day of fasting.

The meal kicks off with a comforting bowl of homemade Pumpkin Soup. Smooth, creamy and delicious.

The platter starts with Spicy Mussels in a rich tomato-based sauce served with crispy garlic bread. The sauce has a pleasant kick and pairs really well with the garlic bread.

What makes this set stand out is how it combines Western steakhouse favourites with Malaysian flavours. All mains are served with Maria’s signature Percik Sauce on the side, adding that familiar local sweetness and smokiness to the premium cuts.

For the four-person beef set, you’ll get Australian Hereford Grainfed Ribeye and New Zealand Lamb Cutlets. Needless to say, both the ribeye and the lamb cutlets were outstanding-after all, these are what Maria’s SteakCafe is known for.

Can’t eat beef? The non-beef set features Grilled Salmon and Garlic Butter Tiger Prawns instead of beef. The prawns are succulent and nicely coated in garlic butter, while the salmon remains flaky and moist.

No steakhouse feast is complete without sides. Expect Onion Rings, Roasted Potatoes and Sautéed Vegetables. The set also comes with crispy Steakhouse Fries, making it even more satisfying for bigger groups.

Dessert is Prune Cake. It is not sugary, which makes it a pleasant and comforting way to end the meal.

It will be available from 19 February to 19 April 2026 at all Maria’s SteakCafe outlets across Klang Valley.

A Winter Seafood Extravaganza at Shakariki 432 Sake Dining in Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur.

December brings in those chilly vibes, and Kuala Lumpur’s food scene is catching some serious Fukuoka feels at Shakariki 432 Sake Dining. Fukuoka is a city in Japan, known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and delicious local cuisine.

Tucked away in the heart of Hartamas, this Japanese spot is buzzing with its exclusive winter seafood menu. Cooked up by Teshima-san, who’s from Fukuoka and has been living the Malaysia life for 12 years, it’s like a tasty adventure of Japan right in the middle of KL’s food scene.

To our delight, we discovered an array of dishes showcasing the bounty of winter seafood from Itoshima city, in Fukuoka prefecture, Japan, renowned for its culinary treasures.

Our culinary journey commenced with the Grilled Itoshima Oysters, available in both full and half sizes. Priced at RM180 for a full size (30 pieces) and RM120 for half (15 pieces), these plump, juicy oysters delivered an oceanic burst of flavor with each bite. The steaming process enhanced their natural sweetness, making it a delectable start to our meal.

Moving on to the 7 Types of Seafood Bowls, priced at RM88, we were treated to a medley of fresh fish from Itoshima. The bowl showcased the restaurant’s commitment to quality, with each piece of seafood meticulously prepared to highlight its unique taste and texture. It was a symphony of flavors that left us craving for more.

The Torched Spanish Mackerel Sashimi (RM38) was another standout dish, featuring impeccably fresh mackerel expertly torched to enhance its natural richness. The result was a delightful dance of flavors on the palate, a testament to Shakariki 432’s dedication to bringing authentic Japanese cuisine to Malaysian diners.

As a sweet conclusion to our seafood feast, we indulged in the Amaou Strawberry Dessert, featuring plump strawberries that perfectly encapsulated the essence of winter sweetness. It was a delightful ending to a meal that celebrated the seasonal treasures of Fukuoka.

Beyond the culinary delights, Shakariki 432 Sake Dining offers a comfortable dining experience. The ambiance is conducive to both casual lunches and leisurely dinners, with the added bonus of a relaxing after-meal chilling session with Japanese beer and sake.

It’s important to note that this special winter seafood menu is only available until the end of the year, December 31, 2023. Therefore, for those who appreciate the finer nuances of Fukuoka cuisine, Shakariki 432 Sake Dining is a must-visit before this limited-time offering bids adieu.

With the winter seafood menu only available for a limited time, seize the opportunity to embark on a gastronomic journey at Shakariki 432 Sake Dining before the year comes to a close.

Malaysia is a food lover’s paradise, with a diverse range of delicious food to excite your taste buds. While popular dishes like Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai often take the limelight, did you know that Chicken Chop was actually created in Malaysia?

The famous celebrity chef Dato Fazley Yaakob has teamed up with Knorr Malaysia in a search to uncover three exceptional but underrated chicken chop joints that are worth exploring. These eateries have not only captured the hearts of their loyal customers but have also received the esteemed title of being among the best in Malaysia.

With that said, here are the Top 3 Award-Winning Chicken Chop Places Recommended By Dato’ Fazley Yaakob:

1. Charlie’s Cafe

Nestled in a quiet housing area in Kuala Lumpur, Charlie’s Cafe has been serving up mouthwatering chicken chops since 2015! Dato Fazley Yaakob has praised Charlie’s Cafe for its juiciness and crispiness. It’s worth mentioning that Charlie’s Cafe Chicken Chop is also really big and affordably priced at RM26.90, with a complimentary Ice Lemon Tea.

The tender, juicy chicken paired with a generous portion of crispy fries or mashed potatoes and coleslaw makes for a hearty and satisfying meal.

What sets Charlie’s Cafe apart is their Chicken Chop sauce cooked using Sarawak Pepper, which gives a mild spicy kick. Its culinary prowess is undoubtedly deserving of accolades.

Address: 29, Jalan Bukit Desa 5, Taman Bukit Desa, 58100 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
Hours: 11 am to 3 pm (Closed on Sundays)
Delivery: 10 am to 6 pm (Daily)

2. Dioh Salai @ Ipoh

Dioh Salai, situated on the outskirts of Ipoh, has been in operation for almost a decade. Founded by Arriff, a young man from Negeri Sembilan who is passionate about fusion dishes.

“My wife gave me the idea to combine Chicken Chop with Salai (Smoked Meat) + Masak Lemak. I basically smoke my Chicken Chop for 1 & a half hours with mangrove wood and drench it in creamy & spicy masak lemak gravy,” Arriff said.

Dioh takes the classic chicken chop to new heights by infusing it with Negeri Sembilan’s rich heritage of spices and herbs. Dato Fazley Yaakob was captivated by Dioh Salai’s unique approach to chicken chop, which involves marinating the chicken in a blend of aromatic spices before smoking it to perfection.

The result is a succulent, aromatic Chicken Chop with creamy Masak Lemak sauce that will take your taste buds on a journey.

Address: Persiaran Sengat Baru 2 (Near Petronas), Taman Bersatu, 31300 Simpang Pulai, Perak

Hours: 12 pm – 8 pm

3. Paku & Pontianak KL @ Jalan Gurney, KL

Paku & Pontianak KL is a casual fine dining restaurant nestled in a bungalow house. Decorated with roses, vintage items, and black accent decor, this restaurant is themed after spooky Malay folklore and will definitely give you a unique and unforgettable dining experience. Furthermore, there are ample parking spaces, making it suitable as a venue for events and parties.

We sampled their award-winning Hainanese Chicken Chop, which is deep-fried until juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Unlike the usual Hainanese Chicken Chop, the culinary team at Paku & Pontianak has given this classic dish a twist by serving it with creamy and velvety tomato-based sauce, and topping it with peas, mushrooms, and fries. The result is a chicken chop that’s bursting with flavor.

Address: 21, Jln Gurney 2, Kampung Datuk Keramat, 54000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur

Hours: 11 am to 11:30 pm (Daily)

While Malaysia is known for its culinary diversity, it’s essential to celebrate the underrated gems that enrich the food scene. Dato Fazley Yaakob’s endorsement of Charlie’s Cafe, Dioh Salai, and Paku & Pontianak KL as the top three chicken chop places in Malaysia speaks volumes about their exceptional quality and unique flavors.

If you’re a foodie looking to embark on a culinary journey, be sure to explore these underrated but exceptional chicken chop establishments.

You’ve probably heard of Akka Nasi Lemak on social media, and for good reason. What started as a small Nasi Lemak stall in a quiet Seri Kembangan neighborhood has now expanded to serve over 500 customers, and she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Where it all started

On earlier April 2023, we discovered a humble Indian lady selling nasi lemak from a social media post. We decided to film a short video introducing this place to all social media users.

Friendly Indian Lady Selling Nasi Lemak with Many Toppings at Seri Kembangan – Akka Nasi Lemak @ Seri Kembangan

Indian Nasi Lemak run by a friendly Akka in Seri Kembangan 💁🏽‍♀️😍

While editing the video, we realized that the stall did not have any online presence, Google Map address, or even a name.

Hence, we decided to give it the name Akka Nasi Lemak and create a Google Map address so that people could navigate to this stall after watching our video. We called it Akka Nasi Lemak because the owner referred to all her lady customers as ‘Akka.’

The video blew up on our Facebook, TikTok, and even our neglected Instagram account. The stall was then featured on many media platforms such as Astro, THR Raaga, and countless random TikTok users.

The birth of Akka Nasi Lemak

Meet Sangeetha Manimalar, the 34-year-old mother who runs Akka Nasi Lemak. Having a hotel management background, the mother of two has been selling nasi lemak for more than 10 years. However, her stall instantly become a “viral” sensation on social media in the month of April, which falls on the Ramadan month.

Her dishes are abundance, you can find Ayam Masak Merah, Ayam Rendang, Ayam Goreng Berempah, Sambal Kerang and Sambal Sotong. No pork is used or serve in her stall. Furthermore she offers two types of sambal, spicy and normal, as well as two types of rice, namely santan rice and pandan rice.

A warrior in the culinary

Nothing great ever came that easy. According to Sangeetha’s interview in Astro Naavanil, she shared that her husband and children was met in an accident. The children have recovered but her husband is still on a recovering stage. But Sangeetha manages her life and the livelihood of her family with the little money earned.

When “Akka Nasi Lemak” started gaining popularity, it attracts all sort of walks, people around Selangor, KL and even Singapore, to line up starting at 12am just to get a taste of her food, almost equates to celebrity fans camp out for concert tickets.

With a sudden increase of customers, she has already enlisted some extra hands to help her. In particularly, her neighbour who’s a friendly Chinese aunty is helping her as well, without asking for single salary.

Unfazed by nonsense

It’s safe to assume that fame attract haters. Despite some mishaps during the stall, Akka Nasi Lemak is going strong. To ensure everyone customers who line up able to purchase her food, token will be given to everyone and every customer can buy maximum of 5 packets of nasi lemak.

Fast food giant, KFC, has been saying their chickens are “finger lickin good” since 1956. However for a long time, their social media channels have been flooded with complaints of undersized chicken. Champions are not perfect too.

Despite some complaints, we were told by KFC that they have been receiving many compliments for the quality of their iconic fried chicken recently.

Thanks to their new Quality Taste Guaranteed Policy, these sorts of comments are getting lesser, and what is Quality Taste Guaranteed? Read on to find out.

KFC’s Commitment To Provide Uncompromising Quality of Food & Customer Experience

Continuous improvement is an ongoing effort to improve all elements of every company, same goes to KFC.

KFC wants to ensure every fried chicken lover is satisfied hence they’ve launched Quality Taste Guaranteed policy back in May 2022 which allows customers to scan a QR code to replace any unsatisfactory piece of chicken through an online form.

KFC Malaysia Brand Head Stephen Chew (2nd left) and chief marketing officer Chan May Ling (2nd right) unveiled the Finger-Lickin’ Good Campaign in KFC Pavilion KL back in May 2022.

Unhappy With Your Chicken? Get A Replacement Without Conditions

To ensure all fried chicken lovers are able to enjoy the freshest and top notch fried chicken, the

“Quality Taste Guaranteed” policy allows you to request a replacement if the chicken you’re served is not up to par. This includes if your chicken is not juicy enough, burnt, too greasy, not tender, not hot, and not as flavourful.

To those who are unsatisfied with KFC’s Fried Chicken, all you gotta do is scan the QR code on the table , fill and submit the replacement form. Once you’re done, flash the “Thank You” page at the counter to replace your fried chicken. No questions asked.

Here’s the Secret That Makes KFC’s Fried Chicken So Crispy

Using the “farm to fork” strategy, KFC ensures their fried chicken comes from a steady supply Halal-compliant and high quality ingredients. All their chicken pieces are delivered into KFC stores throughout the week and are freshly breaded and fried by trained staff everyday.

Treatz! is your new snack to devour when you’re feeling peckish. Made using 100% real potatoes, each potato is sliced into equal thickness and cooked at an optimal temperature. As a result, the chips are light and airy, but still give you that profound and delightful crunch.

Treatz! Potato Chips are available in four super tasty flavours: Original, Hot & Spicy, Seaweed and Summer Truffle.

1. Original

The original flavour is lightly dusted with sea salt, gentle enough to let the natural organic potato flavour nudge through. But try to keep it down, your crunch might be louder than the movie.

2. Hot & Spicy

Love spicy food? Spice up your night out with Hot & Spicy Treatz! potato chips. The Hot & Spicy flavour smells a little like a bunch of diced up onion and garlic, then seasoned with herbs like chili and paprika which makes an exceptional balance between spicy and savoury.

This week, we’ll be sharing with you how YOU as a diner can ‘sapot’ small businesses while enjoying their delicious foods at the same time! These small businesses are with “Grab Online Shop“, a platform introduced by Grab to assist local restaurants and café to support business recovery for small businesses.

Grab Online Shop allows restaurants to enjoy a 0% service fee for every order received. This means whatever YOU as the consumer pay for your meal, the restaurant does not get charged with any service fee (aka commission).

Through the Grab Online Shop, restaurants can set up and design their own branded website with a customisable order URL as an additional revenue channel. Restaurant owners can easily share this order link at their social media channel, so that potential diner can click and order with just lifting a few fingers.

Here’s a sample look of the order url: http://thebaoguys.grab.shop

Restaurants can creatively set up their own website according to their preference. Payment wise, these restaurants are fully integrated with GrabPay and Grab Rewards, and deliveries are fulfilled by Grab’s delivery partners.

Here are the 6 of the many restaurants that have taken part in this initiative, and you can support by ordering on Grab Online Shop with 0% Service Fee with every order

Many homesick Malaysians are stranded overseas during this global pandemic. Aside from being separated away from their loved ones in homeland, some would miss the taste of the authentic Malaysian food.

Priyadashini Maganathan, otherwise known as Priya, migrated to Isle of Man after marriage in 2018 when she was 27-years-old. The Puchong native made a point to visit her single mother annually until last year, her plan was crushed. She hasn’t been home for two years.

One of the ways Priya cope with homesickness is to cook Malaysian food. She started cooking as a hobby after moving to Isle of Man, an island located approximately 3 hours ferry ride from Liverpool in the UK.

As a wedding present, Priya’s mother gave her a written recipe book. Apart from seeking guidance from her mother, she learned how to cook herself by watching online videos.

Realising that she has a talent for cooking, Priya also found it hard to get a job with her marketing background hence she decided to start Makan at IOM, a food delivery business specializing in Malaysian cuisine.

This Malaysian Living In Isle Of Man Sells and Delivers Nasi Lemak and Many More Malaysian Food

Priya specialises in cooking nasi lemak, chicken rice, rendang, and curry puffs which have also been a hit amongst Malaysians who are living there.

Malaysian food is not something unheard of amongst people who live in Isle of Man and the UK. “They are quite familiar actually. Even many people on the island have been to Malaysia or Singapore,” Priya shared.

In terms of flavour and spicy level, Priya also gets local customers but tweaks her recipes to reduce the level of spiciness to fit the locals’ taste buds. She tries her best to keep the authenticity of the flavours.

With the economy opening back up, Priya says that sales have been picking up

During the lockdowns in UK, Priya’s business was affected and she had to resort to home deliveries as offices were closed. However as the UK government has opened up the economy now, things are getting back to normal for Makan at IOM and Priya.

Priya feels thankful that her husband’s moral support has been of much help. Cooking wise, it wasn’t so much as the UK and Isle of Man apply standard and strict policy on food hygiene and food handling. Priya even needed to attend a mandatory one-day course and get a certificate for food hygiene.

“But for our personal meals, he definitely helps me. He even makes a good Wantan Mee,” said Priya, cheekily adding that she really enjoyed her husband’s home cooked Malaysian meal.

As a start-up coping with the pandemic, Priya and Makan at IOM rose soared to higher heights by persevering in the face of adversity and promoting flavours of Malaysia.

Nescafé Just Launched 2 New Coffee Can Drinks—Kopi-C And Kopi Cham https://funntaste.com/nescafe-just-launched-2-new-coffee-can-drinks-kopi-c-and-kopi-cham/ Mon, 07 Jun 2021 15:29:54 +0000 https://funntaste.com/?p=189770 We just got the news that this nostalgic coffee brand is rebranding to a new "kopitiam series" while launching two new flavours.

The post Nescafé Just Launched 2 New Coffee Can Drinks—Kopi-C And Kopi Cham appeared first on Fun N' Taste.

]]>

It’s no surprise that all coffee lovers in Malaysia have tried Nescafé at least once. If you grew up in the 90s (or even 70s or 80s) chances are you’ve seen/heard/smelled/tasted at least one drop of Nescafé. Hence we don’t have to elaborate how nostalgic is this drink…..

BUT we just got the news that this nostalgic coffee brand is rebranding to a new “kopitiam series” while launching two new flavours.

The new coffee can drinks are inspired by the interior of a typical Malaysian kopitiam. Think classic kopitiam marble tables, wooden chairs and mosaic-tiled floors.

So if you’re a coffee lover, who happens to have a nice Instagram feed (and over 100 followers[at least]) you might want to grab any of these drinks below as it’s super Instagram-worthy. Just look at how aesthetic looking these can drinks are.

5 New Nescafé flavours :

1. Tarik Kaw
2. Tarik
3. Kopi-O
4. Kopi-C [New]
5. Kopi Cham (Coffee Milk Tea) [New]

Appearance aside, their new Kopi-C is legitimately pretty good.

Personally, after tasting all 5 can in one day (and not being able to sleep for 3 days now), we felt Kopi-C is the tastiest among all. It has a smooth blend of coffee milk, and super rich and robust.

So kudos to Nescafé for paying tribute to our Malaysian local coffee scene the right way.

Find Out Where You Can Get Your Hands On These New Nescafe Kopitiam Series

Even when modern coffees are available, we just can’t get away with our local coffee – Nescafé.

Wondering where to get your hands on this kopi? Just head to your nearest major supermarkets, convenience stores, and even online shopping platforms.

We all have plans to stay in touch with our friends after secondary school but sometimes such plans fail and the friendships you built in your youth are lost as an adult. Fortunately, this is not the case for six close friends from Methodist Boys School in KL.

Started in December 2020, Co-Cane is founded by a group of six engineering and applied mathematics graduates, who happens to be friends since secondary school.

The Inspiration Behind Co-Cane

What’s the inspiration behind the brand? The founders did not want it to be just another ordinary drinks shop. Therefore they decided to come up with some fusion that they could infuse into the juices. The six co-founders put their degree in engineering to good use by engineering different flavours and fusion of drinks.

Co-Cane is a beverage stall specialises in sugar cane and coconut drinks. Located at a cozy nook at Jalan Sentul Pasar Dalam, they specializes in sugar cane and coconut drinks. Customers will also enjoy a plethora of sugar cane and coconut based drinks, price range of RM3.50 to RM7.50.

Co-cane’s sugarcane juice & coconut water (500ml bottle)

Menu of Co-cane in 2021.

Co-cane serves freshly brewed drinks with no added sugar (except for their coconut shake) and preservatives which is perfect for all the health enthusiasts out there.

Check out some of their top flavours:

Mango Cane (Regular cup)

Ginger Cane (Large Cup) & Original Coconut Shake With Oreo Chunks (Regular cup)

Pine Cane with QQ Jelly Topping (Regular cup)

Cojito – it’s Co-cane’s take on a virgin mojito

Melon Cane (Regular cup)

The six friends were going back and forth for a while on what to name the stall. “Amongst other name that came into contention was Sugarplace, Sugar.co, Cane and Co. The name Co-Cane was what we could say came to us in a lightning moment,” said Danesh K, head of Co-Cane social media marketing. “Everyone was happy with that name as it is catchy and would definitely get attention from the public!”

With a stellar menu of drinks and a strong will to succeed, these boys are proving that they are here to stay and to wow our taste buds. Whether you’re a coconut water lover or sugarcane lover, or you love a mix of everything, as we Malaysians usually do, you can certainly find the perfect drink to tickle your fancy.

Are you bored with the same old bar you’ve been patronising? Well, maybe it’s time to scout for a new place in town.

There’s no shortage of drinking spots in the city, however one with a state-of-the-art robotic arm bartender while you sip and unwind is not that common.

LAVO in Persiaran Tropicana may be familiar to many bar hoppers. They just recently introduced their very own robotic arm bartender named MixoBot. If you want killer cocktails and a killer bar, then this is the place.

Check Out MixoBot, LAVO’s First Robotic Bartender

How does it work, you may ask? Well, no joke, MixoBot can ensure a precise mix of ingredient ratio for a perfect glass of cocktail. MixoBot can be programmed by a professional world-class mixologist within minutes to deliver perfect cocktails every time, without fail.

“Flair bartending has always charmed restaurant patrons and MixoBot aims to do exactly that. Bartenders sometimes may not be as precise as a robot. Customers return drinks to the bar station due to ingredients proportioned that might not suit their taste. The returned drinks cost the bar money and we hope the MixoBot is able to help eliminate this problem – not only for us, but for the restaurants MixoBot serves,” shared by Benson Tay, Executive Director of Focus Dynamics, a fast-growing F&B, entertainment and lifestyle group that runs Lavo.

All you need to do is choose from the menu on iPad and let MixoBot do the rest. We can assure you, you are looking at the first robotic flair bartending in PJ where it can shake and mix drinks, just like a real bartender.

With its flexible arm, MixoBot uses cutting-edge technology, incorporating artificial intelligence to gather data, giving people a more precise and more refined drinking experience.

Good news that there are no additional charges when one orders a cocktail mixed by MixoBot.

So what are you waiting for? Come and experience the MixoBot in-person! Grab a cocktail and a seat, and drink it all in!

You may book a table at Lavo through the GemSpot and mobile application – available on Apple Store and the Google Play Store.

With the fast-paced work in today’s society, many people have a demanding work schedule. Therefore, food tends to be eaten in a hurry. If you are one of those people who is constantly on-the-go and have very little time for meal time, check out Maru Kafe at myNEWS!

This March 2021, Maru Kafe has announced their latest product launch, think Ayam Percik Onigiri, Teriyaki Onigiri, Vanilla Cream Melon Bun,Coffee Cream Bun and their ever popular Strawberry Chigiri and lots more, perfect for those who are always busy.

Read on to find out more about myNews’ new releases.

The lineup includes two types of onigirazu: Ayam Percik Onigirazu and Teriyaki Chicken Onigirazu. They are affordable and convenient – most items cost less than RM10 – and you can get them heated up pronto at myNEWS outlet.

Ayam Percik Onigirazu

Just as the name implies, the Ayam Percik Onigirazu has a ayam percik patty. But that’s not all! The ayam percik patty is thick and marinated with traditional spices, which gives the snack a wonderful savory flavour!

Teriyaki Chicken Onigirazu

The flavour of the Teriyaki Chicken stays true to the original, with the tender chicken taking center stage. With a sweet and salty finish, it feels like you are having Teriyaki Chicken Rice, but in a rice ball form.

If you like sweeter baked goods Maru Kafe also launches 3 new sweet pastries to satisfy all sweet tooths.

Coffee Cream Bun

Get ready to bite into thick and rich coffee cream sandwiched in a soft bun!

Vanilla Cream Bun

With a vanilla cream center, this is a particularly sweet treat. However, the sweetness is brilliantly balanced with the savoury bun, making it a not-too-sweet snack.

Blueberry and Mango Bun (6pcs)

The six-piece range Blueberry and Mango Bun, is topped with blueberry and mango flavoured jam. They’re pillow soft and sweet at the same time.

For those who are fans of Maru Kafe, you might have heard of their Chigiri bun. It was super viral at one point that almost all Maru Kafe ran out of stock.

Their popular Strawberry Chigiri, which rolled off earlier last year, is back by popular demand. This will no doubt be the next favourite breakfast bun for strawberry lovers nationwide!

Strawberry Chigiri

Maru Kafe sells food and snacks of all types, aside from Japanese comfort food such as Japanese sandwiches and onigiri both are excellent choices for a quick snack or light meal.

For a more filling meal, bento boxes are available in all types of varieties, which would remind you of the taste of Japan. If you feel like having Western food, Maru Kafe also sell ready-to-eat pasta.

Maru Kafe by myNEWS offers a huge range of baked goods and ready-to-eat food that are Halal, made fresh daily, with no preservatives added. As the MCO dragged on, those who still work in the office can just grab-and-go or order from Maru Kafe with GrabMart.

With another wave of MCO and only essential businesses being allowed to operate, it surely must be dull to not be able to cafe hop. Rest assured, when the wait is over you can once again be free to visit Instagrammable cafes all around town. On that note, Nippori Bistro was one of the most talked about cafes among foodies in 2020.

“So what is all the fuss about Nippori Bistro?”

Nippori Bistro is founded by the same brain child as Nippori Japanese Cafe in Empire Damansara. The founder, Daichi Fukuzato, 31, comes from an interracial background. His mother is a Malaysian-Chinese whereas his father is a native Japanese.

Daichi & His Family, The Brains Behind Nippori

Daichi & His Family, The Brains Behind Nippori

The idea of Nippori Bistro came about 3 years back, knowing there’s a market opportunity, Daichi had combined the most desirable Japanese and European food together. With that concept in mind came the birth of Nippori Bistro

Nippori Bistro was opened in October 2020. Daichi cited the venture was also inspired by the time when he studied hospitality in Switzerland. In fact, the obese Mona Lisa portrait in Nippori Bistro was supposed to be something else.

“I even thought of placing an English lady in a kimono since our restaurant concept was fusion. But in the end, I couldn’t make any decision until one day I was scrolling through my old album, and saw a photo of myself in Paris when I was in University, I found the picture of Mona Lisa at the art museum.” – the founder Daichi shared with us.

This then sparked a memory of tourists flooding and gushing all over Mona Lisa’s picture which led to the idea of putting up a portrait of an obese Mona Lisa with a glass of wine in hand. Patrons are now left in awe, as this is now the most Instagrammable spot in the entire bistro.

“I remember everyone was crazy standing in front of the portrait Mona Lisa taking pictures of her which reminded me how famous and well known she is to the world. So I decided why not put a “huge” Mona Lisa on our wall to represent Nippori Bistro” Daichi added.

As soon as you step into this 2000sqft cafe, a sophisticated but not overly done ambiance washes over you. The interior is designed in a way that gives out a hint of British colonial residence. A very classic and elegant takeover is what Nippori Bistro is.

The sugar, spice and inspiration behind the menu

Image Source: juexii & Calista Tang

Specialising in Asian fusion cuisine, some of the top dishes served here are the Foie Gras Heaven (sushi topped with foie gras) and the Deep Sea Konbu Pasta (Pasta-Italian, Konbu Japanese).

Located at the far corner of the cafe is a French pastry counter with cakes and sweet treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. Daichi was quick to mention that Nippori Bistro bakes all their pastries and cakes in-house.

If people just come here for ONE dish, what would you recommend them to try?

“Deep sea kombu spaghetti” (But if the person don’t like heavy cream feeling, don’t go for it) Daichi said.

Poshly designed, the delectable desserts are kept in a glass container right beside the striking orange high stool. Among the favourites are the Belgium Mona Lisa, Kyoto Mona Lisa and Hokkaido Burnt cheesecake.

Many fusion cuisines aren’t successful in Malaysia, but what makes Nippori Bistro different?

Daichi believes most people in the Asian-fusion industry miss out on a crucial element that drives them forward which is passion. You cannot simply put Roasted Pork on Nasi Lemak and call it a fusion dish, you have to make sure the flavours are on point and gel well.

Looking back on his journey so far, Daichi noted that “we run a restaurant not because of money; it’s all about “passion”. I feel some restaurant owners forget this important thing.

Another important element is to have a strong identity. For example, Nippori Japanese Cafe is known for its Japanese home cooked concept, whereas Nippori Bistro is known for its Japanese-European concept.

Since it’s MCO 2.0, Nippori Bistro is not open for dine in, however you can try their amazing dishes via takeaway or delivery.

There’s nothing quite appetizing as a steamed buns, otherwise known as Bao, hitting in all the right flavour and textures. Now imagine that a soft, fluffy bao wrapped around a savoury or sweet filling *chef’s kiss*.

If pandemic lockdown has stimulated a creative idea for food, Sek Bao is a delicious idea conceived from the kitchens of MCO.

Yap Zhen Yang, an engineer for 12 years opened Yeah Cuisine in 2018, a Chinese restaurant serving up Hakka Style food, that offer unlimited refills of pork lards.

During the lockdown earlier this year in March, he was experimenting with the flavours inspired by his travel trips around the world, particularly in Asia.

There came this idea to make this into what we know as Sek Bao today.

Happiness Is Now In A “BAO”

Sek Bao’s concept is to bring Asian flavours around the traditional soft and fluffy bao. Everything, apart from the baos, are made from scratch with authentic ingredients from original recipes to ensure that the taste is the same as where it comes from.

Their baos come in 7 flavours:

 • Korean Fried Chicken Bao

The most popular item in the menu is their Korean Fried Chicken Bao, since it is something that most are familiar with.

If that’s not enough to make you try it, you’ll be amused to know that the Korean Fried Chicken Bao is also called the O’Bao Gangnam Style. 10/10 would try for the pun.

 • Vietnamese BBQ Chicken Bao

Based on the traditional Broken Rice (a.k.a. Cơm tấm) dish in Ho Chi Minh.

 • Thai BBQ Pork Bao

This is literally Thai Street food in a bao. One bite of that and you are transported directly to the hustle and bustle of the streets of Bangkok. It’s like you can almost hear the tuk tuks!

For those who prefer a much more local menu, these 3 bao options will still allow you to “Cuti-Cuti Malaysia”.

 • Nasi Lemak Pau
 • Hainanese Chicken Bao
 • Nyonya Assam Fish Bao

The Nyonya Assam Fish Bao was inspired by the historical Malacca. We Malaysians love a good crispy and tangy combo! So, are you surprised that this bao is also called the Fillet O’Fish for Malaysians?

 • Cincalok Fried Chicken Bao

Similar to the distinct colors of Nasi Kerabu, your bao will have butterfly pea flower kerabu mayo to give it that signature blue color.

Those that want a meal with a little bit of everything, may consider top up RM3 to get 1 side dish and 1 drink.

A mess-free meal is the best meal for on-the-goers. With the large selections of baos, there is surely something for everyone. You can order for delivery or pick up at link below:

Order Link: https://sekbao.oddle.me/en_MY/

Rest assured the sauces are individually packed, and everything cradled into a soft, fluffy baos. The baos are also neutral in flavour so it would not change the flavour of the fillings. Making each bite as delicious as the next!

Chili Pan Mee is usually enjoyed with minced pork, ikan bilis, fried onions topped with a poached egg. It’s traditionally sold with non halal ingredients, which makes Halal Pan Mee a rare sight in the market.

So when we came across Mak Cik Wong Chili Pan Mee, we knew we had to talk about it!

Combining Professions & Love Towards Cooking

Feature Image Credit: Fun N’ Taste

Sylvia Wong and her husband Zac are huge fans of Chili Pan Mee and they want to be able to share this dish with their Muslim friends.

The couple duo have been in the advertising industry for more than a decade before dipping their toes into selling Chilli Pan Mee. Being a self-described foodie and home cook, their weekends are spent in the kitchen or just out hunting for the next best thing out there to eat.

“So, I started to experiment with the chili and the marination of the minced chicken. After a few good tries, I finally found the perfect recipe to make this halal version of Chili Pan Mee,” Sylvia said.

She then shared it with her friends and family and everyone loved it. After much support and encouragement from them, Sylvia and Zac launched Mak Cik Wong Chili Pan Mee at the end of September this year, focusing on home deliveries!

What’s In The Menu?

They only sell two Chili Pan Mee so far:

1) Chili Pan Mee (RM11.90)

2) Chili Pan Mee Special (RM13.90)

Each Chili Pan Mee comes with minced chicken, thick and springy noodles, poached egg, spinach, ikan bilis, and a scoop of their homemade chilli paste. Whereas for Chili Pan Mee Special it comes with add-on fish balls.

Chili Pan Mee Special

The traditional minced pork is replaced with minced chicken meat. Moreover, Sylvia confirms that all of the ingredients and sauces used are sourced from halal suppliers.

The chili was packed with heat. But customers can always choose to require for lesser chili, or just separate the chili so that they can adjust the amount of chili they want to put into the bowl.

Making The Best of Covid-19

Home delivery service has recently gained momentum due to the pandemic. Much to Sylvia and Zac’s advantage, Mak Cik Wong Chili Pan Mee solely does delivery services and operates out of Desa Pandan in KL.

Since their launch a little over a month ago, they have already sold over 150 bowls of delicious Chili Pan Mee all over KL and Petaling Jaya. This exceeded the initial target of 100 bowls!

Image Credit: Mak Cik Wong Chili Pan Mee

Sylvia shared “We’ve received a lot of positive reviews and there were also customers who gave us suggestions on how to improve further which we will definitely take note of.”

For those who loves spicy food, this is a definite must-try as it will surely give you a “good kick” in this bowl.
